Streetlevel: T-Cup Opens on Throop
When a cute coffee place opens in an area that doesn't have one, that's news in real estate circles, so we sent our new Bed Stuy correspondent Rachel Chang out for a look.
The T-Cup, on 627 Throop Avenue, finally opened its doors on Tuesday, about a month behind schedule. Owner Tanya Brown (her partner is Reginald Durham) was an accountant when she moved to Bed-Stuy two years ago, and found herself in the ridiculous predicament of driving to Clinton Hill for muffins. Instead of bitching and whining about it, she did something about it. T-Cup is a small, airy space. Only 4 two-seater tables and a counter, but its good strong coffees ($1.35 for large), muffins ($1.65), homebaked cookies and 7am-7pm opening hours should be enough for those wanting a Tiny Cup in South Stuy. A small menu with paninis, cold sandwiches, smoothies and fresh salads. A fair amount of vegetarian options, and no heavy meats. They were out of panini bread when I ordered mid-afternoon, but made the turkey, pesto and mozzarella sandwich on toast instead. Not dirt cheap ($5.50 for the sandwich) but fresh and tasty. Inviting and clean, with returning customers already on the third day of business.

They couldn't be that close if the owner had to go to Clinton Hill for a muffin! Which ones are you thinking of, Amzi Hill?

Common Grounds 376 Tompkins Ave about 5 blocks from this location and
Bread-Stuy 403 Lewis Ave about 2 blocks from this location. Not sure why she had to go to Clinton Hill....

Bred Stuy for one. It is on Lewis. There is also one on Thompkins Avenue, a little further north of this place.

Thanks, Amzi. You even had the addresses!
There is also a little place on Malcolm X and Putnam. I think the name is 254 Cafe.

I'll tell you why she had to go to Clinton Hill for muffins! Because of all the lovely new (and old) coffee houses in all of Bed Stuy, none of them open before 9am on a weekend. And when they say 9am, they mean 9:15 or so. Welcome to the neighborhood, T-Cup! See you at 7:01 and hope you're ready for me!

I'm so glad this has opened, the hours sound fantastic. That's really the big problem with a lot of new places that open. I used to live by Fulton and Washington were a smoothie place opened up. Perfect for breakfast on my way to the subway I thought. Nope! Alway opened late and wondered why they didn't stay in business (there's a dominican hair spot there now. I now live closer to this new place and can't wait to try it out!

Bread Stuy is open at 7 a.m. every morning. I go by there just about every day for my mocha. They have the best muffins and cakes!

Wish them well.

There is also Bush Baby at fulton and Bedford and a new place that just opened on Nostrand between Fulton and Macon. BushBaby opens late though :( but does very well

They opened Tuesday the 2nd?
I went by Sunday (the 7th) hoping for a cup of coffee and a snack, and they were closed. At 11:30am.

I LOVE this place - been 4 times. I walk down Throop to the C train and it is a nice addition to the neighborhood! Tanya is VERY nice and I LOVE the color choices and decor! Good job Tanya and so glad it is here!

Meh... I've had iffy service there. Maybe I caught the cashier girl on a bad day. Place was semi-busy but there was definitely a lack of ambience and I felt rushed to make a selection. I'd rather go to Aida's.

I've been there a few times too and the coffee isn't bad, but I agree with bklynbred about the lack of ambience. I'm not a huge coffee drinker but isn't that why people pay extra money for coffee instead of getting it from a bodega or making it themselves?

Community, let's congratulate Black Businesses and their quest for uplifting our where they live...
T-Cup is a great alternative to bodegas and cafes that can care less about your purchases. The owners are very kind and welcoming to all customers and are always reaching out for the needs of their consumer; so let us not complain about the many cafes we have, let's keep them open. Bread-Stuy is a wonderful place for many, however, the customer service is questionable and heavily whispered about. Their question should be, 'Why is luke-warm, marginal tasting coffee $2.50?'
Community folk, we have to be careful of neighborhood extortion; Starbuck's is always waiting in the wings for a takeover and at least you can count on good customer service and consistent over-pricing. I'm all in for community Black Business and feel confident they will all flourish and do well with our help.
