Streetlevel: New Restaurant on Union

833Union_09_08.jpg
We didn't know much about the new restaurant going in at 833 Union Street, formerly Black Pearl, other than the fact that they applied for a liquor license a couple of months ago under the name Late Harvest. Now, according to the Buy in Brooklyn site, the restaurant is to be called Bussaco, and it offers "house-made soft pretzels." Sounds good, to start. Did anybody stop by there last night? What else was on the menu?

House-made pretzels sounds good? Is this a restaurant or a hot dog cart? What kind of wine goes with pretzels?

The house wine. What an innovative amuse bouche.

What's wrong with pretzels?

Mmm ... pretzels. I live right up the street from this place. Will have to check it out.

House made soft pretzels.

I'm speechless.

Bussaco is in Portugal. I didn't know that pretzels were Portugese fare. Kale soup yes.

The NYT reported a few weeks ago: BUSSACO Scott Carney, a master sommelier who has managed Gotham Bar & Grill, the Tonic and many other places, is opening this new wine bar, with a first growth not just in the bottle, but also in the oak of a communal table made from a tree that came down in Prospect Park. The American food will be by the chef Matthew Schaefer: 833 Union Street, (Seventh Avenue), Park Slope, Brooklyn, (718) 857-8828. Sept. 26.

"You'll find the Malbec really brings out the earthy taste of our soft pretzels, while the Chardonnay accentuates the zing of the cheese-whiz and truffle dipping sauce."

I'm hankering for the corn dogs made with Kobe beef.

Haven't tried it yet, but I fondly remember Lento's pizzas several owners ago. I hope the service is faster than Lento's (obvious musical pun).
