Streetlevel: Donut House Reopens as Coffee Shop

cobblehillcoffeeshop_0908.jpg
"The Cobble Hill Coffee Shop," will be the name of the diner formerly known as Donut House, reports Lost City, though it'll be run by the same folks who handled the business as 314 Court Street for many years before. One question raised on the post: if it's south of Degraw, is it still Cobble Hill, or have you ventured into Carroll Gardens territory by then?

This is in Carroll Gardens. The dividing line is Degraw Street.

it's on the border of Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens. It's in Cobble Gardens. It is a peaceful border region.

Oh alright, have it your way Sam. If they can call Smith Street Cobble Hill, then I suppose Degraw to Sackett is in too! But where will it end! ; )

The north side of Degraw is landmarked and the south side is not. This building is in Carroll Gardens.

Yep, that is the main difference: the landmarking of the Cobble Hill neighborhood. Also, the days of the week you put out your garbage (at least over near Clinton.)

Sic Transit Gloria Mundi...

Oh, all right it could have been worse.

I though it was BOCOCA?

It's Carroll Gardens. I think the only reason they changed the name is because they were sick of my son and I constantly coming in and asking for donuts, which they haven't sold for years.

Who cares! As long as they're coming back. Thank god... one of the few things in the neighborhood to remind us of the Brooklyn of the past. There are so few places like this left across our borough. They used to dot the landscape and were as prevalent as churches here.

I'm a bit bummed that I can no longer refer to this place as "The 'Nut House," but I guess it's better they're still there than not there at all.

Cobble Hill is wherever Barbara Corcoran says it is.

It all used to be "South Brooklyn". CH/CG border used to be Kane St in my book. You could walk the long block on Clinton b/w Kane and DeGraw and watch the Italian flavor of the 'hood gradually appear one multi-colored awning at a time.

And Donut House was always dump. Call me when College Bakery and the Musicians General Store re-open.
