Quote of the Day
Hold the presses people, the U.S. Congress just voted down the bail out package. Good night sweet prince. Let the exodus of jobs from NY begin. We are looking at a big down cycle staring us in the face. Real estate is sunk. Who ever thought the what could have been right?

London was already positioning itself to be the new finance center of the world.... this can just help it along. Oh, and wouldn't it be fun if all of that Wall Street commercial real estate was re-zoned?! We could all get little lofts in the Bear Stearns and Merryl Lynch buildings.

Apparently we have a bunch of immature children in Congress. It started with Queen Pelosi. Instead of making a speech praising the bipartisan agreement, she goes on the warpath and attacks the Republicans. Instead of sucking it up the attack, a dozen Republicans tell her to screw herself and vote no.
Absolutely pathetic. Term limits in Congress. Get them all the hell out of there.

Right, Pelosi. A republican president's been asleep at the wheel for 8 years and it's all Pelosi's fault. Not to worry, I'm sure Sarah Palin's gonna tell us how to fix this on Friday night.

Does that mean the war has officially ended?
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 29, 2008 3:50 PM
Yes, Biff. Everybody please collect your asshat on the way out, and will the last one leaving please turn out the lights?
Posted by: SnarkSlope at September 29, 2008 3:57 PM
The point is, had Pelosi just kept her big fat mouth shut, the bill would have passed. And yes, 12 immature Republicans had their feelings hurt and changed their vote. She sucks, and the 12 Republicans suck.
Posted by: Suburbandude at September 29, 2008 3:58 PM
Politics at its worst. The rest of the world is laughing at us and these poor people in the emerging markets are getting their asses handed to them in their stock markets because of us. That's the sad part. Brazil was down over 9% today. What do you think will happen to Asia & eastern Europe overnight?
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 29, 2008 4:13 PM
If the Republicans can't handle their responsibility for its failure, why run for office?
The What is right. Just wait until Hong Kong opens in a few hours.

I've said it once and I'll say it again ;-)
" . . . where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the healthcare reform that is needed to help shore up our economy. Um, helping, oh -- it's got to be all about job creation too. Shoring up our economy, and putting it back on the right track. So healthcare reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions, and tax relief for Americans, and trade, we've got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive, um, scary thing, but 1 in 5 jobs being created in the trade sector today. We've got to look at that as more opportunity. All of those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that."

The rest of the world has been laughing at us for the past 8 years. It didn't just start within the last couple of weeks.
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 29, 2008 4:55 PM
Yeah Biff but it got a lot louder with this mess. And then there was Sarah Palin!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 29, 2008 4:57 PM
Dave, true. And it was probably more a combination of laughter AND hate.

Freedom Means The Right To Hate
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 29, 2008 5:02 PM
A freedom of collective recklessness. The consumer culture, and correspondent Real Estate culture, have ruined our economy. The Dutch bought Manhattan for beads, and now we have sold the whole country for trinkets and McMansions. It is a shame that wallowing self-love brought down a once great republic. Throw a party, do some blow, the Russians are at the bunker door.

Surbandude: dood, stop watching FoxNews and start watching the news.
A majority of Democrats voted FOR the bill. Only 40% of Democrats voted against it. If a majority of Republicans have voted for it it would have passed.
However, twelve thin-skinned Republican suits had little to do with it. 133 Republicans -- 66% of House Republicans -- voted AGAINST the bill. That's why it died, not because of Pelosi.

The point is, had Pelosi just kept her big fat mouth shut, the bill would have passed.
And if you believe that, I have a bridge for you.
Those late night negotiations? Concessions were made on the promise of 110 Republican votes. That's what Boehner promised Pelosi. Then he didn't twist arms and get them. So to cover his failure, he acted like her typical house floor remarks were SO offensive it justified tanking the economy. Give me a break.
And of course the toddlers in the Republican minority voted against an unpopular bill--in spite of the fact that they don't have any clue of their own what to do. Say what you will about the Dems, they have a preferred option for action that's modeled on Sweden's successful response to the same kind of crisis.

Hope some of you chronic posters are searching your conscience; the driver for this implosion was unsustainable inflation in housing prices. Did you come on here and hype prices (it'll be worth x in y years; I personally know an UWS couple...European...in the arts...etc; the house two doors down sold for....)? If so, and you're (ahem) talking about how the world is laughing at Congress, I have news for you: they're laughing at you.
Posted by: Whuh at September 30, 2008 9:24 AM
Yea I hyped the price of my brownstone. Crap if I had that kind of power I would not be here reading your stupid comment.
