Manhattan Bridge Archway Re-opens to Public

Tomorrow morning the DOT Commissioner, Sadik-Khan, and assorted elected officials will reopen the Manhattan Bridge archway to the public, connecting two sections of Dumbo that have remained separated for 17 years, as anyone walking or biking around that area knows. The 46-foot wide arch, on Water Street between Adams Street and Anchorage Place, will be open for "non-vehicular use," now that it's no longer being used for storage and operations by the DOT's Division of Bridges. They swept away their metal cuttings and joined the Dumbo Improvement District to replace them with lighting and benches and restore the cobblestones.

There's very nice little park area with benches that opened couple months ago at the brooklyn side of Manhattan bridge at beginning of pedestrian walkway way (even though some cyclists still insist on riding on it) - along Jay St.

Commissioner Sadik-Kahn is doing great things for the City - bike lanes, traffic calming, new public spaces. Its amazing how much has been accomplished since Weinshall left the scene.

Too bad they can no longer use the Anchorage space for music and art shows. It is sublime. I believe it has been off limits since 9/11 due to security concerns.
