Every single one of those photos on the Jabour site for the Dyker Heights listing just reeks of class. ;)

That Dyker Heights place looks like a players club suite in a Vegas hotel.

Posted by: Prodigal_Son at September 24, 2008 11:43 AM

Whats with all the marble in that Dyker Heights place...is it me or is that much marble corny? And how about the floor?....lol? A marble floor? Dont you find that in palaces?

Posted by: nybk01 at September 24, 2008 12:03 PM

You have GOT to be kidding, Dyker's the ugliest atrocity of a house I've seen on these pages...and the broker looks drunk or debauched to boot.

Posted by: cmu at September 24, 2008 12:10 PM

nybk01 -- you missed the elevator...to get to the THIRD floor!

Posted by: aishling at September 24, 2008 12:13 PM

Dyker - Is that an elevator opening up into the 'master bedroom'?

CMU - I beg to differ - we've seen uglier posted here.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at September 24, 2008 12:14 PM

Nah....I gotta got check that out again then!

Posted by: nybk01 at September 24, 2008 12:15 PM

Damn you, aisling, you got to the elevator, one minute before I did :)

Posted by: bayridgegirl at September 24, 2008 12:16 PM

hahahaah an elevator! Im not sure what they deal is with this place...there are a few things that are nice, but I think its the general "I live in Dyker and I think Im an Italian mobster" thing that gets me. I have a good friend...educated and from a great family...but he has that corny Italian marble floor...big bulky Italian stle furniture taste that his parents put him on to. That is what I see here in that Dyker place...its your typical Dyker/Bensonhurst idea of a mansion!

Posted by: nybk01 at September 24, 2008 12:21 PM

love the curved glass brick walls. classy, in a cheap 80s sort of way.

Posted by: jingle mail at September 24, 2008 12:23 PM

Hooray, McMansions. That Dyker house is absurd ... There was an article on Gothamist a while back about these atrocities. Apparently a lot of eastern Europeans are buying them up? Nice to know Americans aren't the only ones born with the tacky gene. :)

Posted by: cwbuecheler at September 24, 2008 12:24 PM

I'm not against elevators in residences. I've seen them in single family townhouses and are very comvenient...but I wouldn't want it opening into my bedroom.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at September 24, 2008 12:30 PM

On one of my busiest days at work ever, you had to post a scrumptious NEW Dyker Heights "Mansion" that is simply begging us to go nuts on it. Thanks a lot, Gabby!

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 24, 2008 12:56 PM

What a bunch of losers, making fun of the Dyker Mansion, who cares? Like you guys are the pinnacle of class and taste, gimme a break, Post pics of your crib NOW.

Posted by: billyboomer at September 24, 2008 1:05 PM

5 baths, 4BRs and a rec room that looks like Chateau Deville, all in just 1892 square feet? No wonder the aspect ratio is way off in those photos.

Dyker Heights does have some beautiful old homes, even a couple of newer ones I really like. Unfortunately, they're overshadowed by the recent trend which seems to derive its architectural aesthetics from Miami Beach drug dealer cribs and superpimp movies.

Posted by: Steve at September 24, 2008 1:16 PM

Ya, that place is only 1900 Sq ft?!?! and it sold for that much?

Posted by: nybk01 at September 24, 2008 1:21 PM

During Christmas, Dyker heights residents go all out with the lights and decorations. It's a treat to see. We go see it every year. Looks like every one is trying to out do their neighbor.

- One house had a four horse carousel in their front yard.
- One had a santa (live)sitting in a chair in front of their house, that you can take pictures with.
- One house had life size figures from 'A Christmas Carol'
Etc, etc, etc.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at September 24, 2008 1:27 PM

wow Melanie Kassar, the D-Heights broker is breathtaking!

Posted by: A Guest at September 24, 2008 1:27 PM

SnarkSlope - Are you selling to move to Dyker?

Posted by: bayridgegirl at September 24, 2008 1:29 PM

A Guest, if by breathtaking you mean inspiring one to strangle themselves to death, I concur.

Wow, the Curbed comments on SnarkSlope's link make US look civilized. Better advise billyboomer to stay away from that site; it might be too fun for him.

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 24, 2008 1:30 PM

But who's more of a loser ... the loser making fun of the Dyker mansion, or the loser getting upset because some losers are making fun of the Dyker mansion?

Posted by: cwbuecheler at September 24, 2008 1:31 PM

Ya, Dyker does have some amazing lighting displays. I think Lucy's house is one of them (you all know Lucy...the peppers and sausage lady).

Posted by: nybk01 at September 24, 2008 1:32 PM

I have nothing against Dyker...I grew up in Bensonhurst...I still love those areas, but I get a kick out of everything in those neighborhoods...I guess thats what makes them unique.

Posted by: nybk01 at September 24, 2008 1:35 PM

"Are you selling to move to Dyker?"

It's a toss-up between DH and this gem in Scarsdale:

Biff,

I found a few McMansions for you to enjoy but I'll save those for a day when we don't have a gem like this to savor!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 24, 2008 1:39 PM

SnarkSlope - what gem in scarsdale? Please share.

I think the public is demanding a THOTD - Tacky House of the Day...give it to use Brown.

Jeez, at this rate we could just post slideshows of Dyker Heights houses and call it a day!

Posted by: brownstoner at September 24, 2008 1:53 PM

This is my favorite. I was actually the tipster who sent it in and I had the pleasure of actually having a broker take me to see it and tell me it would cost 2650 a month to live in it.

Prodigal Son,

You are so dead on with that comment! I new it seemed familiar. It's very much like the Salon Suites at the Wynn.

Mr. B, please don't tease us like that!!!

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 24, 2008 2:12 PM

Whatever people think of Dyker, it's interesting that the property got a 400K haircut before it sold. Too bad bstoner didn't list other asks, since I think what is interesting to follow is exactly the gap between ask and close. I suspect that gap will only grow in the coming months.

OMG I'm speechless!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 24, 2008 3:32 PM

In the last photos, in the lower right, there's a red draped 'chair' - that's where Santa sits.

One year, we were walking around and we heard loud music. We walked over to where it was coming from and there was a mob scene in front of a house. We stood around and joined the festivites. The owner gave a speech, his wife also, he handed out tootbrushes (he was a dentist), there was a band, and then a countdown and he flicked a switch and the whole place lit up like Vegas. He then invited everybody to come inside the house to check out the decorations on the inside. We didn't feel like waiting on the line that formed. I wish we had, that's a once in a lifetime opp.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at September 24, 2008 3:51 PM

The past few years have actually been more subdued than previous ones. Two of the most outrageous displays are gone.

One (my favorite) was in front of a beautiful old Victorian on a triple wide lot and depicted scenes from "A Christmas Carol" using life size mannequins in lavish, Broadway-quality costumes. The other was "Christmas Around the World", which was a knock-off of Disney's "Small World" with ferris wheels, a train, and so forth.

One year, I think Christmas 2000, someone constructed a "Christmas dragon". It was an animatronic dragon's head and neck mounted on the roof of a garage. I think it used hydraulics. It had glowing red eyes and swooped down on pedestrians, growling and belching smoke. It scared the hell out of little kids, which is probably why it had such a short run.

As BRG said, the giant Santa has a hidden speaker, mic and video camera so the owner can talk to the gawkers.

Posted by: Steve at September 24, 2008 4:10 PM

I think the Dyker house in this thread is a block away from the Christmas action, which is centered on 83rd and 84th, between 11-12 Aves, I believe. Agree with Steve that 2007 was a bit tame by comparison to years past. DIBS, I take it from your reaction you haven't seen this before. If you've never done it before, round up some kids and head over there this Christmas. It must be seen live.

Posted by: slopefarm at September 24, 2008 4:19 PM

There was a suburb of Chicago that did it but no where near the same scale, gaudiness, etc, etc, etc

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 24, 2008 4:25 PM

I didn't go last year....'A chirstmas Carol' is gone...WHAT...that was the most elegant one.

Yes, I said elegant.

I'm going this year, curious to see what they do, with the economy they way it is. Somehow, I doubt, mafia money is affected by this economic meltdown.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at September 24, 2008 4:34 PM

You'd better go incognito, BRG, they don't like that word.

Posted by: slopefarm at September 24, 2008 4:37 PM

Seeing the lights in DH is actually an annual ritual in my house. We drive down there and gawk at everything, then go to the bridgeview dinner on 3rd ave in BR for something to eat. Always a good time.

As for this house (I will stay on topic here), I expect Don Johnson or the cast from Dynasty to show up at any moment.

Posted by: 11233 at September 24, 2008 4:54 PM

Bridgeview Diner...I haven't been there since my clubing days at Bentley's (local, now defunt dance club). Tight skirt, high pointy pumps, big teased hair. The good old days....I'm liking the dyker house more and more.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at September 24, 2008 5:10 PM

Clear heels nowadays BRG???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 24, 2008 5:17 PM

Where do they store this stuff off-season?

I'm suprized it doesn't mention it in the listing.

The full finished basement has ten foot ceilings, wet bar, gym, fireplace, full bath and enough room to store as many Christmas lights, ornaments and Inflatable Santas as your Dyker-heart desires!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 24, 2008 5:23 PM

DIBS...of course!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at September 24, 2008 5:33 PM

Townhouse Lady,

I hate to unravel the fantasy, but most of truly insane DH displays are contracted out. You will see the contractor's signs in the bushes if you look closely. No mafia (oops) dad is spending his thanksgiving weekend setting all that stuff up. So the basement and wet bar are free all summer long for other activities and are not being used as storage for Christmas decorations.

Posted by: slopefarm at September 24, 2008 8:34 PM

BRG, I feel like I know you (or friends of friends, anyway...). Of course, there'd be a better chance to find us @ Muffin's than Benley's.
People on here don't realize that "Saturday Night Fever" is the neighborhood's holy grail/style guide.
Bridgeview is fine, but I always preferred Tiffany's.
