House of the Day: 139 Clifton Place

Um, no. No one's going to pay $1,200,000 for this run-down four-story brick house at 139 Clifton Place in Bed Stuy (not, as the listing says, Clinton Hill). The house looks in poor shape from the outside, and the listing makes no mention of any salvageable architectural details on the interior, saying only that the house is a "blank canvas." Given that the seller paid $675,000 less than a year ago, you gotta wonder what in the world she's thinking!

1.2 million!!! this is truly amazing. i mean we see some overvalued properties on here quite frequently but this has got to take the cake. no way this is worth more than 700k.
Posted by: bktycoon at September 2, 2008 1:35 PM
this isn't even worth what the current owner paid for it!
Posted by: CHAOCguy at September 2, 2008 1:40 PM
Those two mature oaks in front have got to be worth something at least.
Posted by: dittoburg at September 2, 2008 1:43 PM
overpriced, overpriced, overpriced
Posted by: z at September 2, 2008 1:49 PM
"Location Location Location"?
More like "Overpriced Overpriced Overpriced"!
Speaking of taking the cake, what's the deal with the birthday cake pink icing colored stoop and awning?
The best is the description in the listing: "...a blank canvas that is ready for you to come and put your 21st century mark on it." $1.2MM for a blank canvas in BedStuy? I've got your 21st century mark, right here!

z, once again, you beat me too it!
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 2, 2008 1:53 PM
Is this a joke?
Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 2, 2008 1:55 PM
Ok I give up. Why is this the HOD?????
Posted by: BH76 at September 2, 2008 2:27 PM
For mocking purposes apparently.
Posted by: SnarkSlope at September 2, 2008 2:33 PM
i think it well get above asking
Posted by: blackstoner at September 2, 2008 2:35 PM
Haven't had this good a laugh since my all time favorite HOD Dyker Heights "Mansion".
Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 2, 2008 2:40 PM
Why is The What is selling his house?
Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 2, 2008 2:40 PM
Why does the broker even bother? If some dupe came along and offered $1.1 million, the bank would decline the mortgage based on the prior sale price.
Posted by: Suburbandude at September 2, 2008 3:05 PM
Except, TownhouseLady, I'm suspecting the wicker furniture in this bathroom is of a much lower quality than what was in the Dyker Heights "Mansion".
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 2, 2008 3:28 PM
I agree with prior posters, she overpaid for the house last year when they bought it.
A gut remodel in the heart of Bed-sty, 550K tops.
Posted by: Xander Crews at September 2, 2008 3:40 PM
I visited a friend yesterday in Stuy Heights and she paid a lot less for a lovely brownstone that needed work, but far less than this house needs. She has gorgeous fireplaces, incredible ceilings, detailed woodwork and tile- the codition of the house is far superior to this one from what I can tell from the picture. And she has location, location, location to boot.

maybe the two red ones side-by-side come as a package
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 2, 2008 4:41 PM
Same price as Friday's House of the Day in Crown Heights. Hmmmm......
CH house: freestanding on huge lot, architecturally and historically significant, large landscaped backyard and deck, completedly updated systems, move in condition, new kitchens, bathrooms, finished cellar, period details and charm for days.

Sorry folks but this listing is simply garbage (blank canvas in high foreclosure hood) and was overpaid for even a year ago. Real worth is around $500K and thats for the really brave risk taker. Location location or seller what are you smoking?
Like MM pointed out above there are pristine mansions in better locations that aren't selling for $1.2m Does the seller really think people will just pluck done $1.2m without research? Ce de la folie ici, Merde! Where is the What when you need him?

This looks like a little dump of a house in Camden, NJ.
Is this really in Bed Stuy? I have heard that there are really nice houses there, built generations ago for well-off persons of the caucasian persuasion.
This does not look all that nice to me.
Posted by: Gary Cooper at September 2, 2008 6:57 PM
Ah- I can see it all now. Big Headlines!: gary cooper, knee jerk racist. Ya know, for someone who claims to have gone to Yale you're sure are an embarrassment. (Oh! FYI- I am of the Caucasian persuasion).
Posted by: lurker in the mist at September 2, 2008 7:38 PM
Gary Cooper,
Your brazen attempt to bait and anger the posters here with the mention of race is as pathetic as your previous endeavors to assert your family's wealth and social standing.
It's blatantly apparent that all you really are is a covetous fraud.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 2, 2008 7:49 PM
Lurker,
Really?
Everyone I knew at Yale was just like me.
Why am I racist? because I use the word "caucasian"?
- not even in caps?
Were these houses built by, or for, someone else?
Maybe you have a beef with American history?
Posted by: Gary Cooper at September 2, 2008 7:56 PM
Oh stop it you silly little twit.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 2, 2008 8:01 PM
I second that Town House Lady!
Posted by: east river at September 2, 2008 8:12 PM
"Everyone I knew at Yale was just like me."
Bush is from there also. I say we close down the school.
Don't play the little innocent with me, dear. You know perfectly well why you tossed in that little bit of info. If anyone wants further proof I suggest they visit you on the HOTD of last Friday in Crown Heights. Montrose Morris not only kicked your butt, he kicked it really well.
I tip my hat to you, TownHouseLady.
Posted by: lurker in the mist at September 2, 2008 8:30 PM
Townhouse lady:
cool your jets hon.
there is no Gary Cooper.
It's just a handle.
I'm doing this to get a rise out of you
complacent brownstone-owning bourgeoisie
who think you are God's gift to new York, when
actually. by and large, you are self-rightous, self-absorbed, hypocritical, self-interested, boring, people.
there is no Gary Cooper
He is all in your mind.
cheerio
Posted by: Gary Cooper at September 2, 2008 8:33 PM
Well, the mention of the "caucasian persuasion" is totally gratuitous and unneccessary, gary cooper. It has no relevance to the house, the neighborhood, or the topic at hand.
And please, don't credit Yale with your elitest attitudes. It is one of the most liberal and enlightened universities in the country. They have problems finding a room small enough for the Young Republicans on campus. Perhaps you and your like minded buddies spent your formative years there huddled in the basement of Skull and Bones, plotting the take over of the world, but out here in the real world, we are not impressed.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at September 2, 2008 8:38 PM
Really it's all a sham?? Shocking!
Uh Gary, don't you think that's exactly what I meant when I called you a fraud?
So, if you have such disdain for brownstone owners why are you hanging out with them all the time? Oh right, I already covered that I mentioned that you were covetous.
Come on, anyone with money doesn't try so hard to prove it.

Oh, yeah, right, uh-huh. gary- indeed all of us have user names and I daresay our cyberselves differ more or less from our real world selves. So gary cooper= handle= no surprise. Yawn, babe.
You know, I almost think you might be the What- he claims the same thing but you show such a vast social ineptitude that I daresay even the What has better social skills than you do.
Awww, I know you're sore and upset. After all when you turned the white hot brilliant beam of your crystal like mind upon us, we didn't bow down and worship the Ferragamos. Most of the posters here are self-made folk. I don't always agree with them, but I respect the fact they for the most part they got where they are by hard work and smarts. How you, a self-professed champion of conspicuous and compulsive consumerism fueled by daddy's money thinks to show them anything is such a hoot!
gotta run. Thanks for the laughs, gc. Don't let the cyber door hit you on the way out.
Posted by: lurker in the mist at September 2, 2008 8:59 PM
Oh thank you Montrosse
you sound like a news anchor vetting a politician.
I don't give a fig if you think anything I write is
gratuitous. of course it is unnecessary, this is a blog! duh!
I am always amazed at the thin-skinned goo-goos in new York
I'm so grateful this ain't Cuba, because i would have been arrested by now for rocking the boat and using taboo words like caucasian.
You are a booster for your own selfih real estate interests and yet you act like you are one of the apostles of jesus.
you and the notoriously frumpy townhouse lady.
Posted by: Gary Cooper at September 2, 2008 9:06 PM
There will be a bidding war and the house will go for around 1.65 mil.
...................party like its 2005!!!
Posted by: troll at September 2, 2008 9:46 PM
Nah, gc- in Cuba they would have just laughed you off the Island. You really think too highly of yourself. You just ain't that important. Or that capable.
Posted by: lurker in the mist at September 2, 2008 11:45 PM
Oh Gary, please.
Are you auditioning for the Paris Hilton role in this soap opera?
Couldn't get into Yale Rep? The Drama Club?
We're just spreading a little Lux et Veritas, here, toots.
As lurker said, "you just ain't that important".

Posted by: Biff Champion at September 3, 2008 8:23 AM
Hey, thanks Biff. I'm still laughing over Montrose Morris' line about the Skull and Bones basement.
Gotta say, gary cooper = mutant real-estate bubblehead.
I think she and the What are married.
Posted by: lurker in the mist at September 3, 2008 8:53 AM
Interesting theory. Or perhaps gary cooper is DOWhat and Sarah Palin's love child?
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 3, 2008 9:07 AM
Somehow gary cooper and "love" in the same sentence just don't go. I thought mutant was more appropriate :-)
