First Font Adopted in PLG

A tipster sent in this photo of what she believes is the first adopted fountain in the Adopt Le-Font program we wrote about last week. She writes, "I'm so proud of my neighborhood! Although, I must say, if I didn't know that this was an art project and a temporary installation, I don't know how happy I'd be if my neighbors installed one of these in the front yard as a permanent thing…"

I'm sure I'll get bombarded, but this is such b.s. Read about the so-called purpose of this project, and the mission of the group behind it and tell me how water & energy wasting 'art' like this fits in. If you just say its fun art, I'm fine, but this explanation?

That looks like the drum kit I saw someone banging away on by the Bethesda Fountain in Central Park last weekend.

goldie- If you find out the answer, please let me know. I was wondering that myself. Maybe if it were a copy of the Trevi Fountain done in plastic Poland Spring water bottles I'd see the connection. this just looks like your contractor didn't clean up after himself.

biff- then I take it back. this is an excellent example of recycle/reuse! How could I have missed it?

Has it been configured to emit salt spray which will turn the rest of garden brown? What is this trend with fountain art?

I saw one of these in Boerum Hill months ago.

Maybe this is a solution for what to do with all those empty spackle barrels you've been saving?
Posted by: babs at September 4, 2008 12:55 PM
This thing looks horrible.

Water feature, jawbreaker! Le water feature! But you gotta say, on one level it has that same ticky tacky undernourished look the waterfalls do. At least it's cheaper.

Pint some of them green and some of them red...it'll class it up a bit
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 4, 2008 4:56 PM
And then you could still use it at Xmas
Posted by: lurker in the mist at September 4, 2008 5:15 PM
Of course you would also need the tin foil star and balls for that special seasonal touch.

I wasn't thinking of the holiday thing...more of an ethnic italian or mexican look. Equal time of course to our Jewish friends during the holidays...paint some of them blue

The tubs would be pretty handy for even the most rambunctious of dreidel spinners. I think they have a lip on the top that would prevent the timeless toy from slipping off before someone hit a gimmel!

Hard to tell biff- it look like they may have done away with the tops, in which case I vote for filling them with Mogen David wine and toasting Elijah in a literal display of My Cup Runneth Over. Little lights, latkes,-you could recycle from Chanukah to Pesach. (Succoth could be a little more problematical).

I saw my first one out of the corner of my eye about a week ago in Boerum Hill and pulled over to let traffic go by so I could back up and check it out. Having seen the pre-publicity for them, I was really curious.
The water outlets from each tub is a tiny little dribble. I'll let you use your own imaginations to figure out what it reminded me of. I guess if you made them any bigger, they would need pretty substantial pumps, but the way they are now they just look cheesy.
I like the idea, but the execution really leaves something to be desired.

lurker, oy gevalt, that was hilarious. But I'm worried your sacreligious comments might have my orthodox Bubby rolling over in her condo in Miami as we speak!
Posted by: Biff Champion at September 4, 2008 5:55 PM
Spoke to Bubby- she's sending the wine!

Spotted one at the northwest corner of Sixth Avenue and Union.
