Colador: The Cafe-ification of Bed Stuy Continues
Last week, our new Bed Stuy correspondent Rachel Chang took a look at the new T-Cup cafe on Throop in Bed Stuy; today she pops into the recently opened Cafe Colador on Bedford.
It’s bumper season for Bed-Stuy, café’s-wise. Café Colador opened its doors on August 23rd on Bedford Avenue between Dekalb and Kocsiuszko. It’s a pretty big space with trendy wood-pannelling, and a great open-concept exterior. Manager Robert Jackie, 26, moved from Bushwick, and put his salesman career on hold to concentrate on the café. A very inviting interior - with free wifi - is pretty much packed all afternoon. They do free delivery too, from a pretty wide range of paninis, sandwiches, wraps, burgers and salads. Great breakfast options, and some pretty scrumptious sounding offerings like the grilled skirtsteak sandwich (avocado, swiss cheese, read onions). Opening hours are 6am to 9pm on weekdays, 7am-9pm on weekends. Mid-range prices ($1.75 for a large coffee; $6.95 for a Caesar salad; $8.95 for a burger). Cash only for now, with credit card facilities hopefully up and running in a month.

This place looks much cooler and better designed than T-Cup. It's got a real vibe that T-Cup interiors were lacking, I thoguht.

probably because one is more of a restaurant and the other a coffee shop.

As a restaurant how does the free wifi fit in?? I always think the worst thing for these places in terms of table turn is having wifi.

This is cool because i used o live one block away from this place.... but Bed-Stuy is huge and yet again the people on the other side of Stuy cusp Bushwick still suffers by not having anything cool like this around our way.... shame shame!!

Sounds great. I wish them luck and success. A bit far from me, but hope to get there at some point.
Why, oh why, can't someone open something like this in the center of Crown Heights? Trust me, they would be packed. I'd be there almost every day, as would many of my friends and aquaintances. My friends and I have the vision, and some practical experience and job skills, we just don't have any capital. Partnerships, anyone?

Montrose we need like 10 more of these in both Bedford Stuyvesant and Crown Heights. These areas are growing fast with new people coming everyday. I am sure in the near future you will have places like this. When Crown Heights and Bedford Stuyvesant dose it house tour this year I think they should market entrepreneurs as well as people looking to settle in the area. Also there are many businesses in both the city and Brooklyn that were forced to close down due to high rents. Right Now CH/BS area have really cheap rents and it would be ideal place for people that really want to set up shop.

Really guestula at 12:18 PM? I think T-Cup is elegant, neat, beautiful color choices and although small, very nice. ESPECIALLY for the area. Café Colador looks like Hee Haw, rustic and thrown together from the outside... In the area you need to go REAL nice before you delve into kitsch I think.

Just looked at the pics and my remark about the WiFi was confirmed...hipster sitting there nursing a drink surfing for too long of a time. I remember going into a small coffee shop in Ft Greene and noticing one of them getting up from his seat to stretch; he had been there so long!!!
It does look a bit hee haw but in bed Stuy anything new is good!!!! We make do over here.

Dave Palin: Sorry to offend, but not everyone has one God and not everyone capitalizes it.
Now if God could give me some capital to open a business, that would be another story.

I'm always down to try someplace new... Glad to hear of new spots opening (if nothing else, we need more choices)!

Hell yes, 11205 is ON ITS WAY.
Now that I have this and Tiny Cup, I feel thoroughly gentrified.(minus that drug bust shooting last week. whatevs)
The omelet I had was G-ROSS, and the lattes are one dollar more than Tiny cup, but it' s on the way to the subway, and has basic foody things. This neighborhood needs all the snuggly cafes it can get. And at least the staff doesn't have that "I am 22 and so oppressed by my coolness" problem that I often encounter at..um...Tillies.
Now I can focus on my "SHIKSA GODDESS" movement involving running, rollerblading, and biking up bedford in my skivvies.

i'm a prospect heights resident who has spent very little time in bed stuy, but would like to check it out. what constitutes prime "bed stuy" these days? what subway stop?
Posted by: EliDManheim at September 15, 2008 8:24 PM
A train to Utica...go out the last set of stairs at the last subway car and right into Fulton Park....up and down Stuyvesant and Lewis and all the cross streets around there...there's a street fair on Lewis with a lot of food from local restaurants on Saturday

This place is down the road a bit for me but I will do my best to support it. Montrose, I agree that we need more of this kind of thing but I would love to see a real restaurant (as opposed to a coffee place)-- some place to sit down (or gasp order in from) and eat a meal and have a glass of wine, or a bagel joint or mexican--why oh why is there no mexican in bed stuy (or crown heights)?
