Closing Bell: Energy Crisis to Be Solved by Brooklyn

Well, maybe it won't be solved, but the Brooklyn Energy Project is intended to be "a more rapid and effective alternative to a Manhattan Project for energy." "It is intended to open and accelerate new paths, as well as provide new perspectives, toward averting catastrophe and creating a more peaceful and prosperous planet," reads their press release. Turns out Brooklyn is being used symbolically, though, since it's the "other side of the bridge" from Manhattan. The actual research will take place in Sebatopol, California. Can't beat the Brooklyn brand.

Sounds lame. I can't imagine a large-scale project that achieved its goal more rapidly and effectively than the original Manhattan Project.

That said, I'm glad the research is being done in California (my home state, btw). NYC is quite unique and its residents have no grasp on the day-to-day energy requirements of the majority of the country.

Why don't you read up on the original Manhattan project inigo, and realize that the US is the only country in the world that has actually utilized nuclear devices. On a mostly civilian populations.

Does that make you feel warm and fuzzy patriotic?

Yeah, isn't it odd there are so many quotes about patriotism being less than sensible but here we treat it as if it were God's dictum (oh...).

As an immigrant, I was initially surprised at how the flag flies everywhere here; in my original country, it was actually not allowed (by private citizens) to show a flag except on national holidays. And that country is hardly a bastion of peaceability. And they don't play the national anthem at cricket games either (at least when I was growing up.)

Overuse of symbolism just leads to its dilution as a symbol.

I couldn't agree with you more. Unfortunately, ours is a country where certain people demand immigrants immediately speak the language and those same people are then horrified when individuals in other countries will not or cannot speak English to them. There is a real egocentric and us versus them mentality here. It's also interesting to see news broadcasts in other countries that have a true world view versus the insulated stuff we get. No wonder most Americans are awful at world geography. But we digress...
