Streetlevel: South Slope Gets a New Restaurant

construction-outside.jpg
The folks at Ellis, a new bar/restaurant at 627 5th Avenue and 17th Street in the South Slope, sent us this description of their impending eatery: "The fare is Southwestern Tapas. It's delicious and often adventurous (think rattlesnake skewers). The drinks (and drink specials) are tough to beat and the space is large and inviting." Official opening is September 19th, but they're keeping hours now, including happy hour, with free snacks until 8PM.

Maybe it is just me but their logo/branding does not scream delicious food to me...I would have assumed clothing like a "swank" (terrible word) menswear shop or something.

First, calling it the "South Slope" is stretching things a bit, no? Second, they've been telling customers for 3 weeks that they're just "waiting for a final inspection" before the kitchen opens--now it's Sept. 19? I wonder what the inspection found? And third, $9 for a gin and tonic in that neighborhood is ridiculous.

I wish 'em the best, but regarding their suggestion that one "think rattlesnake skewers":

No.

That's the old Aaron's (or was it Aron's) menswear store, isn't it?

Posted by: Boxermonkey at August 26, 2008 2:55 PM

I agree with offthegrid that the name and logo seem off the mark. "Classy" menswear sprang to my mind as well.

Anyhoo, that part of South Slope (Greenwood Heights, whatever ya call it) just keeps getting more interesting food/drink-wise. Not $9 gin & tonic interesting though, as greeenwood points out.

offthegrid - yep - you hit the nail on the head there. Either that, or a realtors.

Why are there no leaves on the tree out front?

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 26, 2008 3:33 PM

We got enough Mexican food, or "southwest" over here.

French food, please. Or seafood. Or Thai.

Looks like a good bar to me - will definitely give it a try.

Is it me or is this website becoming more and more depressing - without any of the above even trying this new bar they are already complaining about the description of its 'location', the food, the logo, etc etc.

Why don't you all either support someone trying something new or just piss off to the suburbs.

Posted by: JasonB at August 26, 2008 3:45 PM

JasonB, it's just you.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 26, 2008 3:52 PM

Could not agree with you more, JasonB.

People on this site are increasingly negative, judgemental and downright rude.

I plan to go check out this place AND THEN decide if I like it or not.

I don't think people realize how many folks checking out Brooklyn read this site for information first. I hope to God they don't read the comments. If I were thinking about buying in Brooklyn and read this site, I'd want to run for the hills.

And I've heard many people say that exact same thing. They think the people here are wretched hate mongers.

Luckily, most people here are lovely in person, but you certainly would not know it by these threads.

I remember when the only reason to go down to that part of the neighborhood was buttermilk.

How things have changed.

I'd go for a rattlesnake skewer. Is that for real? I've never tried any reptile before.

Posted by: Polemicist at August 26, 2008 4:10 PM

11217, you know I love you, but I don't feel people are increasingly negative, judgemental and downright rude - in comparison to how it was before with the faded type trolls. If you go back to most threads of 20+ posts in the pre-registration days, the comments were incredibly more vicious.

Anyway, we're all meeting in 51 days at Union Hall in Park Slope for the "End of the World (or Maybe Not) DOWhat Doomsday Blowout" at which we'll prove to each other how truly lovely we all are. We had a similar gathering not that long ago and it was lots 'o fun. I hope you can make it!

Has anyone had food their? Walked past it a few times and it seemed they were just serving booze. Another real restaurant in the South Slope would be great!

I'm not hatin, just making an observation. I am a visual person and this simply struck me. If were in my hood, I would be sure to check it out.
I wish them luck and I hope their neighbors will support, envelop and patronize them...and enjoy munching down on those delicious, crisp, silky black shirts...I mean tapas.

Posted by: offthegrid at August 26, 2008 5:57 PM

Rattlesnake, as the cliche goes, tastes pretty much like chicken. Or a silk shirt.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at August 26, 2008 9:20 PM

jasonB - perhpas you would prefer the suburbs -nice, saccahrine and polite - just how you want it.

This is brooklyn btw.

Posted by: dittoburg at August 27, 2008 8:43 AM

Biff- are all invited?

Posted by: Fjorder at August 27, 2008 3:57 PM

The blog has a negative bias and I dont think the comments pretend to have any balance they are just comments. Sometimes valid many times more a reflection of the bloggers attitude and or bias. I would think most people reading this blog would understand this and take this into consideration.
