Return of the Stoop Pooper

img_2468_08_08.jpg
A reader sent in this woeful tale of the downside of having a coveted stoop: "The Boerum Hill stoop pooper has struck. After getting stoop pooped twice last year, I have been struck again by the 'Mad stoop pooper that poops at midnight!!! (or sometimes in the wee hours of the night).' Last year I caught her in process twice, once on my stoop and once between some parked cars in the middle of the day. The latter time I called the police who arrested her. She is a mentally disabled black woman, a little heavy set, with dirty hair. I have a feeling that she was probably receiving the help she needed but was discharged and is back in the hood!!!! Granted I am just assuming it is her again but given that she uses her own toilet paper and some was left on my stoop. I would have to eliminate a random person that just HAD to go. Keep an eye out for her." The reader is on Dean between Hoyt and Bond. Any other sightings?

she really should be doing this in bed-stuy on throop, up one side of the street and down the other, so she'd be the throop loop stoop pooper. then when lisa reports on it, we could call it a throop loop stoop poop scoop.

missed opportunities abound.

Bummer.

Posted by: waverly at August 22, 2008 10:13 AM

I don't see any poop but half of your gate is missing

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 22, 2008 10:19 AM

And if I were the "mad block rater" I'd give you a B- for not picking up those newspapers.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 22, 2008 10:21 AM

this is disgusting and highly unsanitary. when I used to live in midtown Manhattan, there was an obviously mentally unstable woman who used to crouch down and do her business on the corner right at the beginning of the crosswalk at 2nd Avenue and 54th Street. No toilet paper though, just picked up her pants and left.

Posted by: tiptoe at August 22, 2008 10:25 AM

Yup. I've seen her lay a turd--and wipe--by the USPS mailbox on the NE corner of Dean and 4th--it was about 9am with plenty of people walking past.

Posted by: deen at August 22, 2008 10:30 AM

tiptoe...i used to live at the corner of 54th and lexington...glad to see great minds think alike about leaving!!!!

We had a guy who hung out on the corner with his boxes and crazy signs but he always ordered Chinese food from his cellphone to be delivered to his corner!!!

I this really necessary at this hour of the morning? I admire the author's levity, but I personally feel like I'm going to vomit.

Posted by: gkw at August 22, 2008 10:44 AM

I think there's a bigger issue here that no one is addressing. This is another example of Brooklyn getting the short shrift compared to Manhattan. Times Square gets those "glamorous public toilets" and what does Brooklyn get???

Someone whould make a stink about this.

Ohhhh.....so this one of the neighborhood amenities that makes Boerum Hill a better neighborhood than say, WT? It just reeks of elitism. :-o

Posted by: east river at August 22, 2008 11:01 AM

My father told me that "back in the day" my grandmother would go out and clean up after the horse-drawn milk truck passed by and use that in the garden and she had the nicest garden on the block.

If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 22, 2008 11:06 AM

Mentally unstable women crapping on your stoops and wondering endlessly when Whole Foods will arrive...Wow, you guys have huge problems in your neighborhoods!

Posted by: Nanook at August 22, 2008 11:07 AM

Posted by: 11233 at August 22, 2008 11:16 AM

Not to be a total Compost Pedant, but the waste of meat-eating animals is a no-no, whereas vegetarian horse (and cow, unless they are factory-farmed and being force fed scrapie) poop is all good.

Posted by: mshook at August 22, 2008 11:21 AM

Is it terrible that I think this is brilliant? Maybe this is a political statement or maybe she knows that you flagrantly misplace both apostrophes and capital letters alike and wants you to know that she knows.

I haven't had the pleasure of stepping over a poop on my own stoop just yet, but there's one that's been festering on the Brooklyn Bridge for a week and there are a few train station exits that see regular use. Honestly, I'd rather she pooped out on a stoop than in a subway staircase.

My parents think I make people take shoes off in my apt because I'm worried about scuffing the floors. Or because I have a fetish for Asian culture. These are not why. Why is because I know what they've been stepping in with those shoes all day and it is nasty.

The bigger issue that no one is addressing is the profound lack of supportive housing and mental health services citywide.

Posted by: serpentor at August 22, 2008 11:27 AM

When this topic first appeared last year, or whenever, it received the same levity as now. Not to be the only serious one in the room, but do you realize the state of mental and physical degredation someone has to have to defecate out on the street, on someone's stoop? This woman doesn't need to be arrested, she needs to be helped. I hope some local Good Samaritan is able to bring her to the attention of those who could help her.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at August 22, 2008 11:28 AM

I know where this discussion is going to lead now.....and it has to do with some large building in CH!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 22, 2008 11:31 AM

montrose, yes, it is surely a sad situation in many respects. but it's possible to treat the topic of stoop poops with some levity on a website (which the woman will surely never read) while at the same time supporting charitable and other efforts to combat homelessness and related issues (which many of us do when we aren't snarking online).

Posted by: z at August 22, 2008 11:42 AM

Last night about 8 pm I saw a young man get out of a sports car and urinate on my neighbor's bicycle which was chained to a tree while his friends cheered him on and cars behind theirs honked. I feel bad for the stoop pooper (I've seen her myself) but I have no sympathy for the young asshat pissing on a bike. Wish I got the license plate.

Posted by: trudylou at August 22, 2008 11:48 AM

Most of us realize this woman needs 'help'. But - most often the only help they will accept are spare change or food. And can't legally force or convince them otherwise.

Posted by: Petebklyn at August 22, 2008 11:49 AM

Well...Brooklynites brace yourselves because if Mayor Mike's proposal is approved and the Bedford Atlantic Armory becomes the intake center for all five boroughs -- this my friends will be happening more often. Many of these men will not be making it to the Armory, but instead exploring the parts of Brooklyn that are much closer to Manhattan. So please let's get our heads out of the sand and stop thinking that this is just Crown Heights problem.

" She is a mentally disabled black woman, a little heavy set, with dirty hair. I have a feeling that she was probably receiving the help she needed but was discharged and is back in the hood!!!! "

"mentally disabled black woman,"

Why is race a factor? If this was a "well to do white man" would this blog say that? Plus the "Hood" reference is disguising!

But that's OK, I know the prefect economic storm has come ashore and I hope to GOD all of you get destroyed!

The What

Someday this war is gonna end...

BTE Montrose Morris why did you write a long winded post of this use of covert race statement? I bet you too busy kissing this blog ass.

Posted by: what at August 22, 2008 12:08 PM

i agree, z's plea of "nimby!" (or "nimfy" as the case may be) did not apply to pee.

Posted by: i disagree at August 22, 2008 12:10 PM

Plus the "Hood" reference is disguising!

Nothing's being disguised What. Disgusting!!!

I think the reference to color was so that people can understand that they might be watching out for a black woman instead of an Asian woman or a white woman. Should they just have said person and not alluded to sex either??

But you may be right. I too hope this does not lead to a renewed racial profiling effort by the police, stopping every black woman around to make sure she's not about to pinch one off

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 22, 2008 12:13 PM

Unfair swipe at MM. If there is anyone who consistently speaks up on racism- overt, covert, obnoxiously overt- it's been Montrose.

And point well taken, MM. No one should have to live like that. Sometimes the levity is just a way of dealing with situations that are too distressing or unpleasant. Ever hear a firefighter talk about burn victims? You'd think they were insensitive to the max. then you hear about the funds they raise, the hospital visits, the outreach to victims and their kids.

Would have been better, I think, to have called 311, not the police. They have other things to tend to and probably more frightening to a woman whose mental state is fragile. There isn't much they can do except call homeless services. Which the OP could have done more directly via 311.

What, if you call my post above long winded, I'd hate to see what you call some of my really long posts.

There is a vast difference between describing someone, using race as part of the description, and ascribing that race to the behaviour of that person, as if it matters. I think I have the smarts to tell the difference, and to sound off when necessary.

I haven't "kissed blog ass" ever. I have been known to embrace a manual of English grammar from time to time. You might want to try it, the uneducated, bad Ebonics laden What rants are getting tired. You are better than that.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at August 22, 2008 1:03 PM

Police Officers hate getting calls involving "EDP's" because these calls can turn into bad situations really fast. Unless the person is committing a crime, they do not arrest. In some cases were the crimes are mere violations (like pooping on a stoop) and not actual misdemeanors or felonies, they will sometimes make the arrest just so the person can be taken to the hospital for evaluation. If the crime is a misdemeanor or felony, chances are a bail will be set and the person will be held in jail with the judge ordering a 730 mental health exam. This is just a stop gap measure though. Even in jail, the person can not be forced to take their medication and only in the rarest of circumstances will a judge issue an order for "forced meds." Once released from jail, they are given a mental health discharge plan but of course not too many of them stick to it.

The other option is calling DHS via 311. They do not have the resources to respond as quickly as the Police and they can't force someone to go to a hospital or worse a shelter which is worse than jail.

The jails have become the new mental health hospitals and it is a trend that needs to be reversed. The mentally ill deserve better.

Chaka makes many valid points about this whole incident. This is an incident that doesn't really warrant police attention. Yes, the woman needs help but that is a larger societal issue.

If this "poopgate" is the most horrific thing in this homeowners experience then I think he/she is also in need of some help.

Omnivore doo is only off limits if you want to grow food. Or if the shitter's on a lot of pharmaceuticals. You can make a lovely flower bed with humanure.

And, um, not sure it needs to be said, but Petebklyn, there there is a long road and a whole body of social work research between handing out money and legally compelling treatment. Some if it includes things like providing supportive housing for people who decline other treatment. Which can be mighty unpopular, but it does keep throop loop stoop poopers from needing the services throop loop stoop pooper scooper. Everything has got tradeoffs.

not to get all serious here, but yes, this person needs "societal" help, and the world would be a better place if a 311 call could address a situation like this. however, if i were the homeowner and a clearly mentally ill person was taking a dump on my stoop for the third time, i might call the police too. reporting something to the police isn't just about your experience, and how do i know whether this lady is dangerous or not? the police can, and do all the time, decide for themselves whether police attention is warranted. chances are, since this lady is in the neighborhood apparently frequently, the pct knows her, knows her history, and responded appropriately.

Not long ago, an older gentleman (I'd say in his late 70s) had been yelling jibberish outside of my window all day. It was in the high 90s, and I honestly thought he was going to fry out there. At one point he wondered off but eventually he came back and passed out on my neighbor's stoop. He seemed like he had dementia or Alzheimers, and I was worried about his fate. 311 told me to call my local precinct and never even suggested DHS. My local (76) asked if I had called 311. Buck passing all around.

I've actually seen this happen on Clinton Avenue (btwn DeKalb and Lafayette) as well. Also an older black woman, although I couldn't tell if she was disabled or challenged. I was stunned particularly as it was around 9 a.m. on a Saturday morning. She opened someone's gate and squatted among the grass and flowers. A jogger went by and did a double-take (as did I). This was around 2005 or so.

Once Uncle Sammy brings back the candy? Has the candy ever gone anywhere? I am sticking it out What so we will be neighbors whether you like it or not. We are having drinks on October 16th (your doomsday according to you 90 day countdown) and you are invited.

Dave: Since (s)he is incapable of answering you directly ....

Dave

Yes, gas prices have crimped my vacation plans. High gas prices are ruining my budget. It certainly doesn't help that I am not gainfully employed. A steady paycheck and related health insurance - including coverage for therapy - would be a great help for me. If these tough economic times don't end soon, I won't have a pot to p!ss in or a stoop to poop on.

Have a great vacation, Dave. You deserve it. I look forward to seeing you back on brownstoner upon your return.

Safe travels.

I love you.

Cobblehiller:

I'm so thrilled you still think bad fondly to my words.

I'm actually really surprised this particular story is getting so much attention. I don't really have much to say myself.

This is yet another example how our limited conception of "freedom" has resulted in a citizen falling through the cracks. Further proof freedom is a social construct, not a natural state. Without charity, this woman would be dead, plain and simple. She obviously can't care for herself, but I'm sure she could perform basic menial tasks of which there is not shortage in this city. Put her to work!

Posted by: Polemicist at August 22, 2008 3:55 PM

Polemicist: Why do you assume she would be dead? Perhaps she picks through garbage to eat and dress herself. She may sleep in public. She obviously uses the great outdoors as a bathroom. What more does she need, really? A job? Why? She has everything she needs and she doesn't pay taxes, rent, a mortgage, utilities. She has some mental health issues but so do a lot of "normal" people.

Perhaps you are just angry that you have to work and pay for things you don't want to pay for. You could always become a homeless person. Footloose and fancy free. Then some neocon - someone like yourself - can make fun of you and you can just crap on their stoop in revenge.

Posted by: 11233 at August 22, 2008 4:04 PM

Polemicist- you don't see the obvious contradiction in that? If she can't take care of herself how can she perform basic menial tasks? Put her to work? And who's is going to stand guard to see that she gets up every morning to go to her menial job? Or stand over her as she does it? Of course you'll see how much more expensive that will be once you apply benson's time/cost formula (works out to $467.4236859 per every 15 minutes).Yes. Kidding.

fyi- enjoyed the coop thread. Nice to see you in a little more depth. Don't always agree with you but interesting nonetheless.

DOWhat makes Friday afternoons so much better. It's so cathartic abusing him and winding down after a busy week of work (not that he would know what that's like).

DOWhat, I'll ask again. Why has your countdown stopped? It's ok, we're keeping track for you. 55 days.

Posted by: Biff Champion at August 22, 2008 4:07 PM

A mentally disabled person needs treatment, not a job. Our society's inability to provide her with the proper care is another issue entirely. Not only does "putting her to work" not help this person, who with treatment MIGHT one day be able to care for herself, it sounds like a particularly insensitive and self-serving "option."

Posted by: East New York at August 22, 2008 4:28 PM

dave- have a great vacation and don't forget to check in. I will definitely miss you!

Forcing people who can't care for themselves to do menial work is like demanding child labor or indentured servitude. We waste billions in this country but we're going to require a mentally fragile, homeless woman to "give back" for whatever pittance she gets? This woman has so little, why would we do that?

Posted by: bxgrl at August 22, 2008 4:29 PM

11233..."She has some mental health issues but so do a lot of "normal" people."

I hope your not referring to anyone posting all day on an inane blog about about poop that's soon to reach 100 posts!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 22, 2008 4:39 PM

yes, bxgirl. congratulations on your "recovery". i now have a sneaking suspicion that you have multiple logins. seems very convenient that you were "congratulated" on multiple posts today. i also like how this stfu person just "showed up" and then insinuated that he and jingle mail are the same person. are you pissed that the what got the article and not you? if you spent as much energy on improving your career as you do trying to get "famous" on brownstoner, you wouldn't have to portray yourself as a "rent stabber". you would probably be much less of an a-hole too. this site has really taken a turn for the worse. i guess it's true what they say: mediocrity really IS its own reward.

Posted by: jingle mail at August 22, 2008 5:14 PM

jingle mail we don't need you and your other logins here. None of your ramblings make any sense except as they jingle around inside your head.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 22, 2008 5:18 PM

whatever, doofus.

Posted by: jingle mail at August 22, 2008 5:28 PM

bxgirl may have multiple logins, but is she ready to lead?

my name is jingle mail and i approve this message.

Posted by: jingle mail at August 22, 2008 5:35 PM

doofus???? Mr B please don't let the children use the website.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 22, 2008 5:38 PM

Get a bibi gun and a motion dectector light. At least she seems regular and goes at 9 am so it may help in your pursuit if it happens in daylight. Or maybe you can fix your gate and lock it?

Posted by: Ljubitca at August 22, 2008 5:41 PM

well dave, the fun never ends.

You can believe whatever you like. As discussed on this thread it's sad there is no real policy to help the mentally disabled, so there's nothing to be done for you.

"i guess it's true what they say: mediocrity really IS its own reward."
You must be a very rich man then, jingle mail. take comfort in that.

Posted by: bxgrl at August 22, 2008 6:15 PM

jingle mail- cut the crap already. It's so obvious what you're trying to do. Troll elsewhere. How many times do you need to look like a fool before you get it? You tried to use the forum and you got beat. You try to hijack every thread bxgrl posts on. You don't like her, hey, that's your right. I'm sure there are quite a few posters bxgrl doesn't like either. You're a lonely little chirp monkey pissing in the wilderness. It doesn't get more pathetic than you.

"I have been struck again by the 'Mad stoop pooper that poops at midnight!!!"

I thought I was the only guy who loved this episode of The Tick.

Bad is good! Down with government!

I miss little macaroni boy. Loved the Tick.

I highly recommend church yards for this kind of business, particularly when things are not exactly "going your way".
