Streetlevel: A New Bar Coming to Cortelyou

monkeys_wedding_0808.jpg
The folks at Ditmas Park's popular Farm on Adderley restaurant noticed as many folks were lining up for barstools as tables, so they decided what the ever-hippening neighborhood needed was a bar. Later this month, on the same block, they'll welcome their new drinking establishment, a hybrid business that will operate as a flower shop during the day—yes you can sit among the roses and sip wine at night, too. Adderley owners Allison and Gary Jonas and their partner Justin Israelson just aren't sure what to call the place. They're thinking Monkey's Wedding—referring to the times when the weather's both raining and sunny. You guys got any ideas?

Nice addition to Cortelyou Road. Dumb name though. And the neighborhood already has a bar. And a flower shop.

Gee, I was always told that rain while the sun was shining meant that the devil was beating his wife -- that would be an even odder name. But I do enjoy the idea of wine and flowers!

Chaka -
What bar? The Cornerstone closed ages ago. Are you talking about (bookstore, coffee bar, performance space, instant publishing center) Vox Pop, or some grim dive on CIA?

Posted by: Bklnite at August 15, 2008 1:45 PM

Some grim dive on CIA at Cortelyou. They have been there for years and do a steady business and they are actually not so grim.

Posted by: Chaka at August 15, 2008 2:05 PM

Flower shop by day and bar by night?

How about naming it Snowball's Chance?

Posted by: SnarkSlope at August 15, 2008 2:58 PM

Since it was conceived of the barstool phenomenon in the restaurant how about "Bar Stool"

No?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 15, 2008 3:30 PM

Stem

Both the flowers and Wine glasses have them.

Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 15, 2008 3:55 PM

The bar will do well, there is demand. That name sucks though, and could potentially sink them if they are crazy enough to go with that.

Posted by: snap on at August 15, 2008 4:00 PM

Chaka: do you mean Visions or Bar 773? Just curious.

I like the name Victrola. It suggests both a tucked-inside quality, which from what I've seen of this bar fits with the sort of lobby-leading-to-inner-room nature of its interior design, and a vague reference to the word Victorian (tho I think the Victrola was introduced in 1906), which pays homage to Victorian Flatbush.

Otherwise they should name it after a flower. Or just, "Barflower."

Isn't it great that they uncovered and are saving those windows... imagine a nice storefront not made of aluminum.

Posted by: southpark at August 15, 2008 4:34 PM

Since it's going to be filled with hipsters and wine Nazi's how about, "Flinging Poo"

Posted by: Xander Crews at August 15, 2008 4:38 PM

"Ever-hippening neighborhood?"

God help us.

Posted by: MonkeyOnDitmas at August 15, 2008 4:51 PM

MonkeyOnDitmas wins this round.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at August 15, 2008 4:55 PM

I think it sounds nice. Doesn't sound like a hipster spot, though (do you ppl even know any hipsters?) I like Townhouselady's suggestion, its pretty clever

Posted by: blowfish at August 15, 2008 5:10 PM

"Filled with hipsters", really? You couldn't fill a four top w/ hipsters in DP (which is one of the nice things about this neighborhood). It is a catchy word though, isn't it.

Whiskey Flowers - Because you can only come home drunk and empty-handed so many times...

Posted by: ObscureReference at August 15, 2008 5:32 PM

How about, "Storefront for rent"

Posted by: Xander Crews at August 15, 2008 5:37 PM

I thought that 'devil beating his wife' just referred to thunder.

Posted by: Flatbushwhacker at August 15, 2008 6:13 PM

Anything with "Monkey" in the title is automatically twee enough to make you vomit. And you don't want to encourage vomiting in bars, even with handily placed flowerpots. The concept is twee enough (although I love it, but then I am a chick and also not a bar-type-person). I love 'Stem,' nobody will top that one so I won't even try. It's clever without being twee.

Posted by: Brenda from Flatbush at August 15, 2008 6:18 PM

what is "twee"

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at August 15, 2008 6:25 PM

I thought it was going to be called Edelweiss (at least that's what the Ditmas Park Blog reported the trade name would be) but I guess not. The location used to be a furniture store called Cortelyou Vintage, which wouldn't be a bad name for a bar either.

Yes, the area does need another bar. It's near-impossible to get a comfortable seat at the bar at the Farm on Adderley, and 773 and Visions Lounge are not exactly places to take a date. Vox Pop has beer and wine but isn't really a bar.

Posted by: sixyearsandcounting at August 15, 2008 7:29 PM

There was a store on court street in Cobble Hill for many many years called 'Monkeys Wedding', then it opened a sister store across the street called 'The Laughing Giraffe at the Monkeys Wedding'..it is a South African phrase.

How about:

Space Aliens Land/Drink/Have Casual Sex Here

Caveman Approved: Beer Good, Another Beer Gooder

After Eating at Farm on Adderley, Come Here and Try to Keep It All Down While Consuming Pint After Pint

This Is a Gay Bar?

Get the Fuck Out You Native Brooklynite Scum

Posted by: infinitejester at August 16, 2008 11:05 AM

twee: too sweet for words, contraction of "Tweety Bird"

Posted by: cmu at August 16, 2008 11:14 AM

Stem is truly inspired. They'd be crazy not to jump at the suggestion.

I don't think Gary is counting on the flowers for survival. I think it's just a nice touch. Bring in a little extra cash during the day. Make the spot looks beautiful. Add to the overall gentrification of Cortelyou Road.

Have to say, there have been MANY times I've wished for a real flower shop (not a bodega, thank you). And I would happily plunk down my cash for quality pickings. Nothing makes a big old Victorian house sparkle like a vase full of hydrangeas or snapdragons in the foyer.

Posted by: Architerrorist at August 16, 2008 12:00 PM

stem is a bit gay. it clearly should be called Nectar

Posted by: burnley12 at August 16, 2008 1:44 PM

There is a flower shop on Cortelyou, right across from the entrance to the subway, but it's no better than a deli, mostly carnations and mums. I welcome the addition!

I vote for Monkey' s Wedding. It is in line with the Farm's name, also derived from a South African Expression. But Stem is noteworthy. Or Juniper? ( I'm gin-obsessed )

I liked barflower myself. Stem is too short to me.

Posted by: slick at August 16, 2008 6:15 PM

Spouse and I like "Stem" but also "Nectar" and even "Stem and Nectar." But how about "VineBar"?

Posted by: Back40 at August 16, 2008 7:41 PM

Stem is very clever, but I really like Juniper also.

Posted by: HmmWhichNeighborhood at August 17, 2008 8:50 AM

Been beaten to the post with Nectar. But im not mad about monkeys wedding. Sounds like something someone who laughs at his own jokes would come up with. The general rule i always thought is if you have to explain it, its wrong.
Good luck with the Barflower thing though.

Posted by: nicksull at August 17, 2008 9:48 AM

Twee is a British word meaning quaint - nothing to do with Tweety Bird.

Posted by: PLG30 at August 18, 2008 3:44 PM

Stem is very clever, especially if it's going to be a wine bar. Please tell me it's not going to be a wine bar.

Vine Bar is truly the superior name here. Stem and Nectar sound so posh and upper east side Manhattan. This is Brooklyn and I am proud to be a Brooklynite on Cortelyou and Stratford. Congratulations to both Allison and Gary for once again making a great effort to improve or neighborhood an palates. Kampai!
