Grand Opening of Bar on 6th Avenue Today

In the space Bar BQ occupied for four years, on 6th Ave and 20th Street in the South Slope/Greenwood Heights, a new bar will open...today. Safe Haven Bar and Grill will offer $5 Six Point Craft Ales, brewed right here in Brooklyn, and free food all night long. Of course, that's just for the grand opening. Expect to pay for your noshes in the future.

BarBQ was tasty... and the whiskey was deeelicious. Safe Haven, eh? Might have to see what's up with that. Did the change the inside much?

There is a law that states that a bar must be a few blocks from another bar, a school, or a church.
Can someone tell me why I see so many bars so close to each other?

troll- this law depends on zoning which is dependent on the neighborhood. Go to Smith St, 5th Avenue in the Slope or 9th Ave in NYC. There are easily 20 bars in a 10 block span. All legal.

I find the comments by PS misleading. It doesn't really have anything to do with zoning, although a bar or restaurant with a liquor license obviously needs to comply with zoning.
The rule is that a new license can be opposed if there are already three licensed establishments within 500 feet. For years, the state didn't pay much attention to '500-foot rule' objections, although it has started to. It's still far from automatic, nor should it be IMO.

The law about bars being a certain distance from a school or a church is so that priests don't get hammered and go trolling for underage boys

HAHAHA.... that's just not right. I'm disappointed in you CobbleHiller for suggesting such a thing. I think it's to make sure priests don't get hammered and go trolling for ANY boys, underage or otherwise! :-)
I'm going to hell.

There's actually a "unofficial yeshiva" across the street from Toby's Ale House on 6th Ave (down from Safe Haven) that was trying to get Toby's liquor license rescinded since it's across from a "school." Expect they forgot to file it as one. Oh well. Seems silly to be since I have heard from friends the young orthodox men are bussed in and out without even being outside the building for 5 mins. Corruptible youth? I thin not.
As far as Safe Haven's name, reminds me of a run-away shelter or the like. Perhaps it will be for lost bar flys.

i looked in there last night (on my way to Toby's). inside seems untouched. love the six points on tap, which i plan on sampling asap.
i've lived in the 'hood for about 4 years now and couldn't believe how trendy 6th ave seemed last night, with all kinds of hipsters, etc. it looked like williamsburg did about 10 years ago. amazing.
safe haven should do well there.

This stretch of 6th has a really great feel to it- love that it's a little destination in a residential area as opposed to a long strip of continuous commercial like 7th or 5th. There's a neat antique store/glassware store that also opened. Hope more things come in.

Oh no, what happened to BarBQ?!?!? The brisket was excellent!

There are way too many bars in this area. I guarantee half will close in the next year, especially as the economy tanks.
There once were zero hip bars there, now there are like five.

Talked to the new owner, Patrick last week. The BarBQ guy retired so he took over. It will feel the same except with better, local foods (catfish fingers, hushpuppies, and pulled pork sandwiches). He's also expanded the tap beer selection by about ten new lines. I loved Bar BQ but the only reason the food seemed so delicious was because I'd spent two hours drinking beer and whisky before I sat down to eat.

As always, the optimist. And I KNOW you'll come back with "realist."
The area will support what it can support. The 6th Ave corridor in that area is perfect for small places, since it is surrounded by residential, much of it newer higher density.
I say bring on more. If only a bar with a good tequila selection, but I tip my hand.

Pulled daily from the Gowanus.

"Pulled daily from the Gowanus."
That would be "developerfish" then. Looks like a red grouper, tastes like ass and costs a ton of $$.
