Law High on Adams Gets Ready for School

The Urban Assembly High School for Law and Justice's new building, at 283 Adams Street in downtown Brooklyn, will be ready for students come the first day of classes, September 2nd. According to a June, 2008 update on the Inside Schools Web site: "Joining SLJ at the new location will be the Urban Assembly Institute of Math and Science for Young Women and K369P, a District 75 school. The Khalil Gibran International Academy will take SLJ's place at PS 287." Anybody sending their kids here?

Previous entries on this project have acknowledged that this structure is not a "new building," but is an extensive renovation (with a rooftop addition) of the old Family Court building.

Adrian, "new" is being used the way I have described all of the cars I have owned, as in 'new to me.'

Pretty snazzy school. Wouldn't it be nice if all schools in the city were this nice? The school with a "theme" is a really interesting thing about this city. I wonder how "successful" that model is.... I mean, take away all of the NYC schools' themes and/or focuses and I wonder how that would affect "general academic performance."
And yes - that's a big squishy topic... Sorry. :-) Not really after a discussion of the merits of various versions of school assessment (NCLB and "report cards" etc.), just intrigued by the "theme" schools. Not sure if these exist in many other places, as public schools.

Tybur,
Gates Foundation is funding themed small schools across the country.
So far, like Charters there is no evidence to suggest that they out perform regular "factory style" high schools.
But, the re-calibrated progress reports come out in September.. we'll see.

At college prep level, I think themed schools do a bit of a dis-service. On a trade/skill level, themed schools make the transition to work easier.
However, the problem becomes who belongs in prep courses and who belongs in trade/skill courses.
