Air Rights and Cell Towers War in Bay Ridge

8701-Shore-Road-0808.jpgThe Brooklyn Paper reported yesterday on cellphone towers being installed on the roof of a Bay Ridge Building at 8701 Shore Road, inflaming a neighborhood-wide issue. Some folks have health concerns regarding the antennae, though Verizon says they don't emit more radiation than a radio. Some residents who helped dissuade the company from installing them on a local school now find them on their very own rooftops. The co-op board apparently approved the installation; good way to make money for the building's coffers, though clearly not all co-op members agree. One says there was never a vote on the proposed installation at all.

Tell them to stop using cellphones and there will not be a need for towers. Everyone wants them but they don't want the towers in their back yards. They should move upstate where whole communities can't get service.

Iknow, I agree, I'm writing this from Lake George where they've been trying to put in a tower for years, to no avail.

denton...where in Lake George are you? I used to go to Bolton Landing when I was younger and we also camped out on Huckleberry Island!!!

I am sure the Coop board would be willing to forgo the revenue (generally around 18-20K a yr) if those specific Coop members who object agree to pay a special assessment that would make up the revenue.

they don't seem to realize that cell phone signals, wi-fi, radio, etc. already fill the air everywhere. this is like holding up an umbrella to stay dry while swimming in the ocean.

A coop is not a commune -- the shareholders do not vote on every issue! That's why they elect a Board who is responsible for the management of the building. And I am willing to bet that the ones who are complaining also complain about why the maintenance is so high and blah blah blah....

DIBS, we have a place in Green Harbour, if you know where that is... if not, 2 miles N of LG on 9N, on the way to Bolton. Heading down to the beach now...

All I know is that I did not have curly hair until they installed all these cell phone antennae.

I think it is fairly ignorant to be afraid of cell phone transmitters on the roof of buildings. It verges on the superstitious.

yes, these residents should redirect their efforts to more serious concerns, like keeping the building free of black cats or ladders over walkways.

i know theres no definitive proof, but i would not want to live in an apt directly beneath the towers.

There is a lot of power in those things so when you are living within 10 feet of the tower, you are getting a large dose.

It's certainly not healthy if nothing else.
