StreetLevel: Peaches Market Opens in Bed-Stuy

peaches-07-2008.jpg
The folks who run House By We sent us a gushing review of Peaches Market, the Southern-tinged restaurant that opened last Friday on the corner of Lewis and MacDonough: "The crowd was lively and the atmosphere cozy and welcoming. Food was fabulous: the warm black-eyed pea salad was scrumptious, clam strips were delectable and the blackened tilapia—fresh and light…and all very reasonably priced." Yelpers are similarly smitten. Anyone else check it out? Peaches comes c/o the people behind Fort Greene's Smoke Joint (which, coincidentally, is today's Restaurant of the Day) and Little Piggy.

Yup...I commented below on the Smoke Joint thread that anyone in Bed Stuy should check it out. Fried catfish sandwich and gumbo were great. Had the ribeye with roasted potatoes too...not all of this in one sitting. The ribeye had great grill flavor but wasn't rare enough for me but the roasted potatoes were maybe the best I've ever had. Very friendly staff.

Dave: Do they serve liquor?

Posted by: 11233 at July 22, 2008 2:53 PM

No, not yet...BYOB but they will have a license soon. You know about Olivino the wine shop that opened on Marcus Garvey & Macon right? Its 2 blocks away from them and open pretty late if you need to grab a bottle, or 2, or 3.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2008 2:57 PM

Do they have anything vegetarian on the menu?

Posted by: rh at July 22, 2008 3:02 PM

Been twice to Peaches. They have some good veg. sides - a tasty kale with garlic, some fine cheesy grits, good salads.
Had a rack of ribs, some trout and the above-mentioned rib-eye. This is a big improvement on Petit Bassam which was the most recent tenant of the space. The owner and staff are friendly - and they keep refilling your lemonade and ice tea - no extra charge.

Posted by: flyingfish at July 22, 2008 3:06 PM

Yeah, fish! Sorry, couldn't resist that. I can't remember if there was a vegetarian entree but there are salads and sides. The caesar salad looked very good...I guess that would depend on how strict a vegetarian you were because I think the best part of a caesar is the dressing!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2008 3:06 PM

Looks delicious!

Will have to cross Atlantic Ave, and make a pilgrimage. Clam strips, gumbo, - yum!

Posted by: Montrose Morris at July 22, 2008 3:06 PM

Would love to have a drink with you there MM...you are one of the most knowledgeable people on this site and probably one of the sanest as well.

Have tou ever been in that bar on the corner of Troy & Atlantic?? Can't remember the name.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2008 3:09 PM

Love Peaches and wish them well. I have shopped at Olivino's and support them as much as possible without crossing the line into needing AA meetings. On that note, there's a real bar on Troy and Atantic? That's not exactly a hot spot for food and beverage. Also, Dave, since you're usully up on the local news, what's the deal with the brick oven pizza place that's supposed to open @ Lewis and Halsey? Any update or opening date?

Posted by: MacD at July 22, 2008 3:41 PM

Yeah Dave, and what about that house that was going to come for sale on Decatur? Any others you know of coming on the market around the Heights area?

Posted by: Susan Elkins at July 22, 2008 3:48 PM

Peaches is a great addition to the neighborhood. Good food at reasonable prices. Let's all be sure to patronize the restaurant, so it's here for good!

Posted by: stuyheightshoyaka at July 22, 2008 3:50 PM

I just have seen the bar there when I'm in a car on the way home from Boerum Hill. It looks "interestingly seedy."

I heard from another poster on here a few weeks ago that the owner of the pizza place was at their Halsey St. block meeting and said "about 6 months." Otherwise I've never known anything about it except whats been posted here.

I'm still trying to line up some financing to buy Macon & Stuyvesant corner.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2008 3:50 PM

Good memory Susan. I'm not sure he's going to put it on the market now. Its the middle greystone on the south side of the street with the real nice stone stoop bet. Stuy & Malcolm X

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2008 3:52 PM

Yeah, pretty strict, Dave. Hey Dave, what about that place that's supposed to open on Nostrand around Hancock? I forgot the name.

Posted by: rh at July 22, 2008 4:09 PM

I don't know that part of the neighborhood very well. Are you a Level 5 Vegan? Won't eat anything that "casts a shadow" LOL Can't remeber the name of the movie where I heard that one.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2008 4:13 PM

Dave, I know that grouping. Very unusual facade that almost looks like marble. I think there are about 3 in a row, right? When you're looking for a house you remember these things. Too bad. I heard that a gourmet foods store was going to open on that corner. Great local.

Posted by: Susan Elkins at July 22, 2008 4:18 PM

Yes, that's the grouping. The store would be us...still trying to get the building though.

I heard a rumor that Union Market is coming to Bed Stuy. I highly doubt it though. Where?

I also saw renovation work going on in the corner space at Marcus Garvey & Fulton....anybody know whats going in there?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2008 4:23 PM

I am out of town on business, and am really looking forward to getting back into town so I can walk down and eat dinner!

Posted by: vanburenproud at July 22, 2008 4:32 PM

Good luck, Dave. Are you working with Ardenia? I met her briefly at the Akwaaba event and she mentioned her plan.

Posted by: Susan Elkins at July 22, 2008 4:44 PM

yes susan. thanks.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2008 4:54 PM

I've eaten at Peaches. I was very happy with the food and service. The prices were reasonable and food tasty. I wish them great success. I can't wait til they start their Sunday Brunch.

Posted by: Oldlady at July 22, 2008 4:54 PM

I echo everyone's comments about the greatness of peaches. fantastic addition to the 'hood.

Hopefully they will put pressure on Solomon's porch to shape up their act. Some of the live music acts are great, but the food and particularly the service completely suck!

Dave, what ever happened to that placed called Stizzy's that was supposed to open up? Is that your place as well?

Posted by: bedstuyhoya at July 22, 2008 5:14 PM

Not vegan. Level 5 vegetarian. Nothing that had a mother. Or nothing with a face. I switch it around from time to time so I don't get bored.

Posted by: rh at July 22, 2008 5:33 PM

I love that Dave is able to answer all the questions. Seriously. Thanks, Dave.

Posted by: 11233 at July 22, 2008 5:43 PM

Thanks, Dave, would love to take you up on that. You are a character, and I admire your defense of Bed Stuy in its entirety.

But....(hands on hips) what makes you think I am familiar with a seedy bar on Atlantic Ave????? Well, I never! Besides, it's a little far away from me. I'd rather dip into my Appleton's overproof Jamaican rum.

I'm looking forward to visiting this establishment. Good luck with the real estate, and come on over to Crown Heights anytime!

Posted by: Montrose Morris at July 22, 2008 6:27 PM

I posted about the future pizza place at the corner of Halsey and Lewis... Just what Dave said, the owner was at our block meeting recently (he lives on the block), and he said it would take about 6 motnhs before they open. We recently resuscitated the block association for Halsey between Lewis and Marcus Garvey, so if anyone wants to join, please come to our next meeting, we will meet every month on the third tuesday at the Macon library.

I'm glad to hear that Peaches is so good, it seems like a major improvement compared to Petit Bassam. I've had some good food at Bassam but the place was not consistent. Being francophone I enjoyed talking to them, and I'll miss them.

Dave, you seem to live just around the corner from us and I've been learning a lot from your posts... We should meet for a drink sometime.

Posted by: Ibis at July 22, 2008 7:39 PM

Sorry, our block association is Halsey between Stuyvesant and Marcus Garvey. If you live on our blocks, come to the meeting! We will also distribute a survey in the next few weeks.

Posted by: Ibis at July 22, 2008 7:42 PM

Sorry MM just wasn't sure where in CH you were and thought maybe you knew that stretch of Atlantic. God forbid I insinuate that you were some sort of bar fly. I have been to Augie's Brownstone Inn just down from Marcus Garvey on Fulton...nice quiet crowd.

Ibis...yes, I'm on Stuyvesant bet. Halsey & Macon...lets go there next week Maybe housebywe, susan, MacD and bedstuyhoya can all get together

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 22, 2008 8:47 PM

Cool idea, Dave. Let's all figure out a day/time.

Posted by: MacD at July 22, 2008 9:01 PM

Wow, I'd love to but I'll be away from this sunday through August 9th. Have a good time, and I'll definitely take a rain check.

Posted by: Susan Elkins at July 22, 2008 10:45 PM

Dave, you are a hoot.

It would be great for all of us much maligned Bed Stuyers and Crown Heightsters to get together someday. This place looks great for a fun gathering.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at July 22, 2008 11:14 PM

How about next Wednesday or Thursday evening?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 23, 2008 9:47 AM

I've been to peaches about 4 times and LOVED every dish I tried:
Blackened Tilapia
Fried Green Tomatoes
Catfish and Fries
Chicken and White Beans (insanely delicious)

Can't wait till brunch also.

Posted by: nextup at July 23, 2008 10:00 AM

Dave, are Park Slopers and Brooklyn Heightians (Heighters? Heightonians? Haitians?) also welcome to attend the soiree? I would love to finally check out BedStuy.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 23, 2008 10:10 AM

I can do either one, although Wed would be better. I know I can persuade a couple of other CH'ers who are active Brownstoner participants to join in as well. If you want to take this off the public pages, please email me at montrosemorrisATyahooDOTcom.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at July 23, 2008 10:10 AM

i actually have dinner plans to go to peaches tonight. i am looking forward to it since many of my friends have gone already and are simply raving about it. i hope we finally have a spot that is here to stay. i though petit bassam was good but extremely inconsistant. the area needs this - basic, chicken, burgers, fries, salads and a good brunch spot. i think petit bassam was too specialized - let's start with the basics before we try to get fancy.

Posted by: bkny at July 23, 2008 10:14 AM

Biff...of course Slobers and BHers are allowed...lets all email MM and we'll shoot for next Wednesday.

I dare not give out my real email here except to who responds so maybe i'll get a new one...

Are we allowing stroller moms, hipsters, faded type guests too?

I may be there later tonight around 9:00 if they are still open

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 23, 2008 10:41 AM

OK...lets shoot for next Wednesday...email me at

Nokilissa? Heather? bxgrl???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 23, 2008 10:59 AM

dave - that mean i'm not invited. i was a former faded type guest and i'm a stroller mom. lol.

i would leave the kids home - so no worries...

Posted by: bkny at July 23, 2008 11:05 AM

I had fallen into that lowlife practice of baiting here on the post bkny. Of course you're invited.

And maybe I'll see you there tonight but not sure I can get there before 8:30

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 23, 2008 11:12 AM

dave - i will def be there tonight. but beware it is stroller mom night out!lol

often when i'm strolling down stuyvesant - i go is that dave?lol.

Posted by: bkny at July 23, 2008 11:18 AM

LOL...I just get into the stroller discussions here when they really go off the wall. It's not a big deal over in Bed Stuy so I have no feelings one way or the other.

I wondewr what Craig & Ben think about this whole thread...i guess we'll find out soon!!!

Any publicity is good publicity.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 23, 2008 11:25 AM

Dave, I'll email you at that address. And we definitely need to find and confirm Nokilissa, Heather, bxgrl, Bob Marvin. However, everyone should be welcome.

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 23, 2008 11:32 AM

Craig & Ben's new motto could be, "We bring bold and faded type guests together!"

Posted by: Biff Champion at July 23, 2008 11:34 AM

Next Wed. is fine with me, say 8ish?

I'm happy to bring a bottle of red if someone would be willing to share their fries.

Posted by: MacD at July 23, 2008 12:45 PM

We probably can't make next week...but it's on for the next one!

Posted by: housebywe at July 24, 2008 12:46 AM

Can't join you guys next wednesday. I also see randmon people on Stuyvesant and wonder if that is Dave!

Let me know about the next one.
