Sayonara Kent Avenue Powerhouse

The demolition of the beautiful old Powerhouse on Kent Avenue at Division Avenue continues apace, with large portions of the building's rear already destroyed. Con Ed, which decided to raze the building rather than explore adaptive reuse opportunities, has not made public its plans for the site post-demolition.

what a waste

A victim of:
- misinformation from Con Ed
- not ideal location for possible re-use in culture or entertainment
- possible prohibitive costs to clean up its toxic waste
- possible prohibitive cost to convert economically to residences

While I would have loved to see it saved, it would be a huge project to undertake. If only Con Ed could have been given a tax credit or something for donating it to a foundation, a la the Highline in the city. But Hasidic Williamsburg ain't the meatpacking district, alas.

Sad.
