'Real World' + Belltel = 'Center of the World'?

belltel-070808.jpg
Is "The Real World" filming in Belltel Lofts the best thing that could have ever happened to the condo? An article in The Real Deal examines the evidence:

-"Last week we sold seven apartments," said Prudential Douglas Elliman's Ilan Bracha, who took over the building's sales not long after the contract with "The Real World" was signed. "We have three negotiating." The building is approximately half sold since going on the market more than a year ago.

-"In my opinion, 'The Real World' contract is worth a couple of hundred thousand dollars in advertising, branding and PR," says another Elliman broker. "They have to mention Belltel in every episode and have a shot of our lobby in each episode. Every bit of press about 'The Real World Brooklyn' will have Belltel in it, and as you can imagine MTV is a much stronger press machine than Clipper Equities, the developer."

-"My sister is 38, and she watches it religiously," said Jeff Ross, who with his wife bought a unit in Belltel in October of last year. "She was like, 'You'll be the center of the world!'"

StreetEasy shows there are 16 active listings at Belltel right now, ranging from $512,500 for a 566-square-foot unit to $1,890,000 for a three-bedroom.

Any 38 year old who watches The Real World "religiously" has a serious, serious problem.

Any 38 year old who believes that living where The Real World is taped constitutes living "at the center of the world" should probably be euthanized.

a 38 year old woman who still watches the real world?

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 10:19 AM

Clearly an advertising bonanza for this building.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 10:19 AM

Jeff Ross you idiot for admitting your 38 year old sister still watches the real world, religiously. Jeff Ross' sister, you idiot for admitting to anyone, ANYONE, that you still watch the real world at 38.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 10:23 AM

i'm scared to say i'm 48 and i still watch it! i hang my head in shame...

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 10:26 AM

If this place is the center of the world then I welcome Armageddon. Drop the nukes on Brooklyn, we deserve it.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 10:31 AM

i can see guys watching this garbage, for the trashy girls gone wild appeal, but older women? WHY?

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 10:33 AM

oh please because the television you watch is so high brow - STFU

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 10:33 AM

anyone over 30 who watches anything on mtv let alone real world should be euthanized

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 10:37 AM

Oh, you snobs. I watch it too. I also watch Book TV.

Posted by: Carol Gardens at July 8, 2008 10:37 AM

The Weather Channel would be better

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 10:38 AM

I watch it and I am a 33 year old female. I love the guys in the show. Some sexy hunks there. Plus I am fascinated to see these relationships between good looking strangers.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 10:40 AM

And the fourth rider has galloped on to the scene...

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 10:43 AM

The buyers in this building will be cursing their decision when they cant get by in the lobby/halls/streets because of the film crews and talent. Being from L.A., I'm used to these productions taking over spaces, and acting like its now their land and you're in their way.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 10:48 AM

to the 33 year old woman who watches the real world bc of the sexy hunks > get off the couch and go get yourself a boyfriend! 10:38 is correct, the weather channel is more interesting, not to mention actually real!

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 10:48 AM

What's really sobering here is that some people are being labeled "snobs" and "high brow". For crying out loud people, no one is saying we should sit around watching Masterpiece Theatre all the time. The complaint is merely that The Real World is an idiotic bit of programming twaddle--which of course it is, with a vengeance.

All I can say is "Wow!"

To Whomever Now Has Their Finger On "The" Button: Go ahead! Push it! Detonate those nukes where they lie. We have no right to continue now.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 11:05 AM

I've never actually watched BOOK TV (i guess because i spend too much of my time actually reading) what's the deal with that channel?

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 11:15 AM

There is something wrong with the StreetEasy.com listings for past sales for Belltel Lofts. It looks like units are being double posted in the past sales section. It list 201 sales but after taking into account the double posts, it is more like 100 sales. Also, the in contract listings are being displayed in the past sales section.

Talk about a cluster-f*&k.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 11:19 AM

Maybe we can hire those roving gangs of teenagers mugging Pratt students to camp this block. THEN, we can get those IKEA bus riding junkies, (sorry! recovering adicts!) to detox in the lobby. Could be a little messy but what fun!!

Brownstoner could sponsor and sell the vids at the Brooklyn Flea.

Win Win Win.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 11:23 AM

So what if it is "idiotic bit of programming twaddle" - its got hot people hooking up - which is interesting enough.

The reason why people are being called snobs isnt because they are laughing at watching the "Real World" - its because they are making out like the people who watch it must be killed.

Again like I am sure none of your entertainment is idiotic - heck you read and post here - seems about on par - no?

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 11:30 AM

C-Span 2 turns into Book TV on the weekends. It consists of pointing a camera at someone doing a reading at a bookstore or at some think tank. Sometimes there are only about four people in the audience. On the other hand, they also have had in-depth interviews with decent writers like Updike, etc. Now back to your regularly scheduled real estate bickering...

"So what if it is "idiotic bit of programming twaddle" - its got hot people hooking up - which is interesting enough."

maybe back in Tulsa The Real World becomes a little more interesting, just enough to pass the time and boredom.

But not here in NYC. nope sorry.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 11:50 AM

11:50 - speak for yourself

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 11:58 AM

Jeff Ross you idiot for admitting your 38 year old sister still watches the real world, religiously."

C'mon....half of your posers are at least close to age 38 or over AND watch "The Real World." Stop fronting. 10:26/10:37/10:40 are among the few honest people on this thread, and 11:30 makes the best point: what makes this stupid blog, with its juvenile insults, race-baiting and elitism any more high brow than "The Real World"???

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 12:35 PM

seems to take a bit of energy to make others think youre more refined than you really are.

Real World - peering in on what is going on in other people's lives for the sexyness/drama.

BrownStoner - peering in on what is going on in other people's boring lives (bird blog, construction probs, renos, neighborhood bashing)....and then actively posting about it!

yeah, thats better.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 1:10 PM

Forget the Real World...who watches MTV?

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 1:15 PM

I too admit to watching the real world...one of my guilty pleasures. i actually tune in on the weekends when my mind goes blank and i can live vicariously through their lives since mine is so bland! but honestly, i NEVER did 1/4 of the things these kids do now when I was their age and actually wish I did!=P

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 1:30 PM

like hello. people well into their 30s who are still watching mtv = RED FLAG.

just like all you late 30s guys out there who are still playing your video games = RED FLAG.

ladies you know what i'm talkin about.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 1:59 PM

The cool thing about the real world is that you get to see that the real good looking people also have their issues and you get to witness it.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 2:19 PM

I agree with the poster who says that BelTell residents' lives are going to be a NIGHTMARE. "Center of the World" -- second ring of hell, more likely. Movie/TV productions completely take over an area and are intrusive. For film location shoots, it's usually only a few days. But for Reality TV -- it's months. Feel bad for anyone who shares a floor with the Real World Apt, and the elevators are going to be perpetually busy.

Have fun.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 2:20 PM

forget about the BelTell residents, their prop values will be going up bc of the hype. howabout we sympathize for the stupid real world kids who will have all their drunken debauchery immortalized on tape. like getting a bad tattoo. 15 years from now, whoops!

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 2:36 PM

True indeed I'm 37 and I cant wait to get home from this hell hole job to play grand theft auto on my Play Station 3.

40 is the new 30!

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 3:36 PM

hey 3:36 maybe you should ask Jeff Ross' sister out on a date, i bet you guys would really hit it off. She's probably single as are you, obviously.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 3:48 PM

listen to yourselves, you ARE the real world..

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 4:03 PM

No...how about we sympathize with the "roving gangs of teenagers" in Brooklyn who are habitually labeled as "thugs" and "ho's" and locked up and generally given up on by white society for participating in mostly harmless (although admittedly juvenile - they're teenagers - and sometimes destructive) behavior.

Now they get to watch a group of white kids move into the neighborhood and get PAID to drink and whore about and tear sh*t up on national television, while the same middle-aged white women who cross the streets to avoid "gangs" of black kids cheer the little jackasses on and have little voyeuristic fantasies about them. Then other white people, thrilled by the promise of proximity to this infamous display of entitlement (sexy!), will flock to the 'hood, bid up the market and price these black kids and their families out of the homes they've scraped by for decades - sometimes generations - to rent or own.

Query, why is drunken debauchery cute when white kids are involved and criminal when black kids are involved? I'm with 11:23...Real World Brooklyn can go down, but if you want it to be REALLY real leave those brats on Marcy Ave at 2AM and don't let the camera men help.

And yes, they do always have a token black on The Real World (and three on the Las Vegas season and two on the most recent season and no it doesn't really change the argument).

Posted by: MizJenkins at July 8, 2008 4:04 PM

You're a loser 4;04 PM

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 4:56 PM

whoops its 5pm! time to go home and kill all them thugs on my play station 3

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 5:10 PM

4:04, you answered your own question on why the two are different when you proposed to leave them on Marcy ave. In Brooklyn Heights, the 'brats' might chide you, in your hood they kill you.

"Miz"? thats ghetto, or should i say krazee.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 5:16 PM

'The Real World', a reality tv show, is the 'center of the universe.'

Is there nothing else of value other than real estate and entertainment/tv/marketing?

We are a doomed...please study geography and the bible. I do not care if you are not religious.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 5:22 PM

5:10 you too? GTA is off the chain.

3:48 it's obvious you're fool. I'm very married. Eat a fat one!

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 5:35 PM

"No...how about we sympathize with the "roving gangs of teenagers" in Brooklyn who are habitually labeled as "thugs" and "ho's" and locked up and generally given up on by white society for participating in mostly harmless (although admittedly juvenile - they're teenagers - and sometimes destructive) behavior."

Harmless?? Some of my own people (yes, I'm black), mainly teen-agers, have cold MURDERED other people, OK? I'm not saying that only black folks commit murder, but you have to admit that a lot of black kids are shoot people, mainly other black kids. Let's be real. I don't think the admittedly drunk morons on The Real World have killed anyone, at least not yet.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 6:07 PM

i feel bad for your wife. no wonder she is in the other room watching mtv.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 7:23 PM

6:07 - agreed. I wasn't advocating sympathy for cold-blooded killers. I'm talking about the ones who aren't...

Yes there are "some" black teenagers who kill other black teenagers. Just like there are "some" white teenagers who vent their frustrations with a hail of semi-automatic gunfire in the school lunchroom.

But of the 98% or so of teenagers of both races who are not murderers but simply bored, reckless, immature kids, somehow only the black teenagers comprise a "gang" or have words like "thug" and "criminal" commonly associated with them.

Black kids goofing around and getting rowdy in a group of three or more are instantly subject to suspicion, derogation, interrogation, incarceration and random police violence. White kids doing the same thing get a t.v. show.

Posted by: MizJenkins at July 8, 2008 7:32 PM

"hot people hooking up"

If only there were videos that focused on exactly that. You know, just sex, and not endless hours of fake drama and other twaddle.

I bet somebody could make money off an idea like that.

Posted by: guest at July 8, 2008 8:45 PM

hopefully the mad crapper will strike when the show is filming. daily.

Posted by: BrooklynLove at July 8, 2008 10:54 PM

7:23 other floor. we are very happy dont feel bad for us. Maybe when you leave Fistina alone you'll find someone too.

Posted by: guest at July 9, 2008 9:44 AM

Jesus! what a bunch of opinionated people so ready to criticize each other! what happen to live and let live. Do I really live in the USA, let alone NY! Damn this blog IS the REAL WORLD!!!

Posted by: guest at July 10, 2008 11:46 PM

MizJenkins/7:32p > Black kids goofing around and getting rowdy in a group of three or more are instantly subject to suspicion, derogation, interrogation, incarceration and random police violence. White kids doing the same thing get a t.v. show. Since you brought it up...let's see why!!! the white kids doing the same thing get a t.v show!? oh...Now I get; the white kids are always harassing or mugging ppl; who are just going about their business. Minority kids on the other hand; are just mostly going to bible studies & minding their own business; because they know in about 10 to 15 yrs of working hard getting an education or educating themselves; & just maybe...they themselves could probably afford to purchase one of the condo's going up in downtown Bkyln!!! Yes...Now we know why; when we see a group of white kids; we always cross the other side of the street! because we may get robbed/killed or harassed. O.k white kids, you have been forewarned; stop causing trouble & the harassment of ppl going about their business!!! All it's doing is causing more & more resentment towards you!
