I Hate Valentine's Day Shoots Seemingly Everywhere

The movie I Hate Valentine's Day, which stars Nia Vardalos, has been covering a lot of Brooklyn ground recently, according to the blog Filming in Brooklyn: Seventh Avenue in Park Slope, Front Street in Dumbo and around Fort Greene Park. One reader took these shots last night on St. Felix Street. Any other locations we've missed?

Very slow day today Mr. B. Post some HOTD with recessed lighting and exposed brick walls!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 18, 2008 11:00 AM
saw them filming around Washington ave in FG about a week ago.
Mr B do you think we are catching up to Manhattan as far as filming goes? I live in FG and it seems as if there are film crews everywhere these days...lucky Brooklyn

PPW in WT, they've taken over a storefront and turned it into a restaurant set (a fake tapas bar).

Dave, don't hate; commentate! Forget recessed lighting, how about the state of a market which considers Citi losing $2B to be good news! Up almost 2 points again today.

pierre de taille, I've noticed the same thing in other areas. It seems there lots more filming this year than I recall last summer. I wonder if a lot of it is attributable to the weakened dollar and less filming in places like Toronto and Vancouver.

Just trying to lighten the mood on a muggy Friday in the summer, Dave!

Court Street at the florist in Carroll Gardens.

I saw them filming on the Promenade the first week of July.

I'm still bitter about that fake Tapas place in WT. Visions of garlicky squid were dancing in my head, alas.
They were shooting on Fifth Ave on Wednesday night. The block with Mura on it.

Anyone know what movie they were filming on the (shut-down section of the subway racks at Hoyt-Schermerhorn about a month back? They changed the Hoyt signs along the walls to 42ND

Biff...I never express hate. But I did like the saying.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 18, 2008 11:51 AM
Thanks Dave. And Citi actually lost $2.5B, but what's $500MM amongst friends?
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 18, 2008 11:55 AM
Hey Biff you may be up to something there. A couple months ago they did some extensive filming on Lafayette and Adelphi. I mean hipsters and honeys everywhere but didn't see anyone famous though. Oh well not even the weak dollar can help with that one......

You can tell this movie will suck just from the title. They better do right by Brooklyn--it is based in Brooklyn, right? We're not standing in for Georgetown again I hope--or heaven forbid, Cleveland.

They took over the restaurant, Mura, on 5th Ave between 6 and 7th on Wednesday.

Hi davinbedstuy, that was the remake of The Taking of Pelham 123, starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta.
And Biff, New York State recently increased (by a huge margin) the tax rebate given to productions that film in NYS. Coupled with the smaller rebate given by NYC, New York just got a lot cheaper for productions.
Movies and TV shows are flocking here like never before. Ugly Betty just moved their entire production here from L.A., a huge coup for NY. One of the producers of the Ethan Hawke movie Brooklyn's Finest said that without that new rebate, they simply couldn't have made the movie, since director Antoine Fuqua refused to film anywhere else.

Beau, I'm not feeling the title either, but who thought "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" would be a hit?

They took over the restaurant, Mura, on 5th Ave between 6 and 7th on Wednesday.

"They took over the restaurant, Mura, on 5th Ave between 6 and 7th on Wednesday."
Is that the first time that place has ever been 100% full?! Always looks a bit empty when I walk by.

Don't just walk by Mura, Mr Joist. That's the best of the new Japanese places on 5th.
Posted by: SnarkSlope at July 18, 2008 12:51 PM
They were on Court Street between Atlantic and Bergen a couple weeks ago, mostly at Downtown Bar & Grill.

Biff... My feeling about MBFGW was "what an over-rated P.O.S." when I finally saw it after hearing over and over how great it was. But you're correct--there is really no way to tell what will click with the public.
Posted by: Beau Guest at July 18, 2008 2:03 PM
Beau, our feelings regarding the film are the same. As a life-long lover of foreign, indie and documentary films, I too thought MBFGW was grossly overrated and there are so many better (in my opinion) indie films that didn't get anywhere near the recognition that one got. Fortunately in New York we get the opportunity to see at least some of them.
My point was simply that the title certainly didn't prevent it from being a financial and critical success.

"My Cousin Vinny" and "Kiss Me Guido"...two bad names...two very funny movies
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 18, 2008 3:21 PM
"My Cousin Vinny" is a great title.

Star Wars is a stupid movie title, so there's that.
The other day a fella popped by our house scouting for a new JJ Abrams TV project (or so he claimed) - in this case Brooklyn is supposed to stand in for Cambridge.
