Development Watch: Gearing Back Up at 37 Nevins?

37-Nevins-0708.jpg
Ever since the destruction of the beautiful three-story brick and cast iron building at 37 Nevins Street last September, the empty site has just sat there, boarded up with plywood and scaffolding. So we were intrigued to see some activity Monday morning. Some plywood was down and a digger and caddy were parked on the lot. There are no new building permits posted on the DOB website yet, but we'll be keeping an eye out. We believe that this is the future site of a 200-room Sam Chang hotel.

Not to be picky -- OK, to be picky -- that's a Chrysler, not a caddy, parked in front of the digger.

A hotel in that spot?! Hard to conceive...that's def. one of the worst blocks in the area. I used to walk by it everyday on the way to work -- always smelled like urine and had rats running around.

And every single business (with the exception of angelica pizza) on that block (nevins btw schermerhorn and livingston) is out of business/closed. The whole block feels like a nuclear holocaust went down -- shuttered storefronts, fading signs, and crumbling brickwork.
