Closing Bell: Fair Weather Flea?

At this point, we've stopped believing the weather reports, but if you do put stock in those kinds of things, you'd have reason to be optimistic about a dry Flea this Sunday. There are plenty of other reasons for optimism as well: First off, we've got the inaugural run of the Flea Scavenger Huntfind any of this week's three items, and they're yours to keep. To beat the heat, we've got organic People's Popsicle joining existing vendors Chida and Blue Marble. To whet your appetite for antique and vintage finds, check out this recent post on the Flea Blog. For the newbies out the, the Flea hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday; it's located at 176 Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn. Closest trains are the C and G to Washington/Clinton. Or you can take any of the number of trains that go to Atlantic Station and make the 10-minute stroll up Lafayette Avenue from there.

Is the Flea still going on? I thought that was discontinued a month or so ago.

ok guest, your days on this blog are numbered - get your kicks and digs in while you can. your continual posting of "I thought the that was discontinued a month or so ago" are really getting tired. if you had eyes in your head, you would see that every friday, there is a weekend flea preview post. enough already.

CHAOCguy, Guest 4:51 was joking, of course...and maybe you're joking too...
Oh, well...

I disagree.
That comment has been made -every week- OVER and OVE and OVER. Its not joke. Its someone being an asshole.
Monday this bs will be OVER.
Posted by: guest at July 11, 2008 7:59 PM
The comment was not unreasonable. I myself had wondered whether the flea was still going on because it's been so sparsely attended. It's a natural mistake.

Has anyone else noticed that the spamming has *stopped*? The bastard knows he won and isn't even bothering with it now.
What a SOB!!!
Posted by: guest at July 11, 2008 11:11 PM
This is precisely why I opposed mandatory registration the last time around. It's unconditional surrender. It means victory for the trolls, spammers and jerkwads who have finally succeeded at ruining a wonderful site. I simply cannot believe that this sort of humiliating surrender is the only alternative left to us. All it would have taken is a couple of competent techs to avoid this unhappy ending.
Anyway, many of you *asked* for this surrender. On Monday you're going to get it. On every subsequent day you're going to have to live with it. Good luck with that.

If I see one more post about the "Brooklyn Flea" I think I will just bit myself!

one more bit and then I bite

"Monday this bs will be OVER."
No, on Monday the bs will just get started.
"Mr. B, ban him!"
"No, Mr. B, ban HIM!"
"Mr. B, I make valuable posts all the time, so ban him!"
"No, Mr. B, I make even more valuable posts so ban HIM!"
No, Mr. Bbbbbbb!

That flea market sucks anyhow. The first time I went with my dog they kicked me out and I had to wait outside while my wife browsed inside. The second time when I went alone, they wanted me to tie my dog up at the fence OUTSIDE, and leave him there. Meanwhile I saw plenty of dogs going inside with their owners. I guess you have to be friends with a stall owner to be let in. Elitist shites! Never going back there again. Are they idiots? He is the friendliest pooch and doesn't bite, lick, or even go near strangers, nor does he pee on inanimate objects.

no only are you a troll but you must take us to be idoits - yeah, you and your dog were singled out - waaaaah waaaaah waaah - nice try to start something - there are NO dogs allowed in the flea period - whether you know someone or not. you were not singled out, it's a general rule. i have been there every weekend and have NEVER seen a dog inside the flea. get a life you troll and all the other trolls on this site. half of you don't even live in brookly so what business do you have posting any of your opinions here. get a fricking life!

Typical comments and nothing to do with the flea. The crowds are there unless it rains hard, then a couple of hours are lost. It's hard to imagine that someones life is so shallow that they resort to putting up false and stupid posts. Go get a hooker or something else productive. Maybe you'll get lucky and catch something.
Posted by: guest at July 12, 2008 10:09 PM
"Go get a hooker or something else productive."
That's actually pretty good advice. The last couple of times I've visited "The Flea", a couple of hookers were the only people to be seen on the site. They may be the one thing you can count on finding there.

BROWNSTONER: Please get rid of guest logins. This stuff is informative until the clown "guest"s show up. Make this site better by just forcing people to sign up.
Posted by: Jack at July 13, 2008 10:17 AM
You're wrong, Jack. Typically, the non-guest comments are at least as hateful and nonsensical as the guest posts. So, eliminating the guest posts won't address your concern AT ALL. If it would, I'd be the first person to call for mandatory sign-ins.
What would work, I think, is more attentive oversight of the blog and more technical expertise. I agree with the earlier poster re the spammers. The spammer that has plagued this site has vanished and I'm sure it's because he considers himself "victorious" now. We shouldn't give into these wingnuts. Before we compromise our own websites, we should find ways to block their access. And their access may continue to be a problem even after registration is required. What's to stop this pig from creating 1000 yahoo email accounts and registering with brownstoner under 1000 different user names? There are ways to do this that would be fully automated. It's so easy it's not even funny.
Mandatory registration will do two things:
(1) Give the spammers, trolls, etc. the cheap thrill of feeling like they've actually won the war this time.
(2) Damage this site.
Posted by: guest at July 13, 2008 11:38 AM
I think the move to mandatory registration is a positive step.
Posted by: White and Proud in PLG at July 13, 2008 12:13 PM
jack, yours is one of the top most uninformative posts on this thread and you are "logged" in.
Posted by: guest at July 13, 2008 12:19 PM
less than 12 hours to go ...
what are these cornballs going to do to fill their workday now?
Posted by: BrooklynLove at July 13, 2008 12:53 PM
Yeah! This is my last chance as a guest to tell the most jerky guests that I am glad that they will be gone. Maybe we can get back to talking about the actual topics of the threads now. Some predict the demise of Brownstoner because of this decisions. I rather doubt it as more people will return and participate--the ones who have gotten tired of reading threads that are mostly insult, spam, Biff self-love, unfounded rumors, and same weekly (and weak) joke about the flea being closed. Not to mention the overused comments such as "go back to Iowa", bitter renter, etc. etc.
I welcome The What and the Park-Slope cheerleaders. They may be predictable but at least they have opinions and the ability to construct sentences more complex than "you suck".
PS: If you think are so clever as to make the next post a simple "you suck" I beat you to that concept.
Posted by: guest at July 13, 2008 2:13 PM
I'm with you, BrooklynLove.
Posted by: White and Proud in PLG at July 13, 2008 2:26 PM
"what are these cornballs going to do to fill their workday now?"
They'll register under a variety of made-up usernames and continue posting as usual.
Next question?
Posted by: guest at July 13, 2008 3:17 PM
"Typically, the non-guest comments are at least as hateful and nonsensical as the guest posts."
Anonymity makes it worse. Most people don't want to connect an e-mail to an account. Simple as that.
You know how you control hecklers at a show? You charge at least $1 at the door. You'd be amazed at how many chucklheads you get rid of that way..
Posted by: Jack at July 13, 2008 4:27 PM
Actually, Jack, it's not as simple as that.
First, it's not going to cost anything--not even one dollar--to register with a username.
Second, the email address associated with the username can be ANY email address. It needn't be the email address you normally use. It can be a throwaway webmail address. The right software can create a thousand of these for you with the click of a button.
We're not charging anyone to join the party, but we're going to make it mighty tempting for folks to leave early!
Posted by: guest at July 13, 2008 5:07 PM
"white and proud" is a little close to 'white pride' for me.. let the onslaught of "original" names begin.. this oughta be good...
Posted by: guest at July 13, 2008 5:12 PM
Missed the flea today!!!! But it's always a little overpriced in the housewares section anyway. Just got my login. Too bad I forgot the damn password......
Posted by: BSandCHBorderBaby at July 13, 2008 7:07 PM
"The right software can create a thousand of these for you with the click of a button."
The threat of people registering thousands of "fake" e-mails is nonsense. I do this professionally and it's one of the modern myths of the Internet.
Force people to register and block guests and things will be better right away. They do it on tons of site and the signal to noise ratio is tons cleaner.
Funny that the only people claiming it "doesn't" work are cowardly guests posting nonsense in this comment thread and others.
Posted by: Jack at July 13, 2008 8:23 PM
Oh, dare I make an on-topic comment, but today's flea was great. The variety of sellers is much better than before. And the Pupusas were really good and very affordable.
Posted by: Jack at July 13, 2008 8:26 PM
Actually, that's not a myth of the internet. A roommate of mine in college used software like that to posts ads on Craigslist...hundreds of 'em. Scary, actually.
But be that as it may, Jack, I'm in 100% agreement with you that manditory registration is the way to go. It's time to clean house on Brownstoner.

I have a question about the flea market I want to ask, but I guess this isn't forum for it? I could have sworn the post was about the flea...
Posted by: GoGoMrPoPo at July 14, 2008 9:53 AM
click on the flea link at the top right. Eric is the best person to ask about selling, hours, rules and regs.
Posted by: bxgrl at July 14, 2008 10:58 AM
I won't go to the flea. The whole idea of it for me was to take a nice long walk with my six pound dog and browse around. But then I got there and they don't allow dogs. Useless.
My wife had to stand outside while I rushed through not buying anything. The flea market on 7th ave in Park Slope is on school grounds and they allow dogs. You're missing out on a lot of sales because of this outdated policy.
Posted by: pastoralia at July 14, 2008 4:12 PM
i know there have been umpteen posts about dogs vs no dogs at the flea in the past. but what exactly is the official reason why no dogs in the flea? because the school claims that they could do their business in there and ruin the ground surface? that the vendors don't want their merch pee'd on?
on another note, whatever became of that early bird $5 admission fee? there was a serious negative vibe about it initially, and then i never heard how it panned out. did senor flea actually go thru with it?
