Closing Bell: Carroll St. Subway Entrance Closed

As of today, the Carroll Street F/G station entrance at 2nd Place will be closed for about 8 months. The closure comes as part of construction work for the condo project at 360 Smith Street, Oliver House. Pardon Me for Asking has a roundup of some resident reactions to the closure.

so people will have to use an alternative entrance that is 1 block away? the horror!

This city really has become of bunch of entitled whiners

The only problem I see with this is that the west side Brooklyn bound entrance does not have a booth and are turnstile only – so people with strollers are going to have to go in on the other side and walk all the way down to cross over. But then again people with strollers and such make crazy train connections up and down stairs at Atlantic/Pacific and other stations everyday.

If the MTA says they'll be done in March 2009, that really means the entrance will be closed until 2012.

I understand the need for development, but the entrance on 2nd Place is about as Carrol Gardens as it gets. I remember waiting outside for the F train and running into half the neighborhood at the entrance all through my childhood. It may seem like I'm waxing poetic about nothing important, but to me the scaffolding over the subway entrance is a true indicator that this neighborhood is just becoming a cement city.

My only question is how the developer got the MTA to agree to that. The MTA had the power to extract concessions on behalf of the community to make up for the inconvenience. I think that would have made everyone feel better about it.

The MTA has a long history of spinelessness when it comes to developers. Take the case of the dead escalators at Union Square for example:

Yeah, it's not closed until the 28th, per the sign in the photo that Brownstoner posted. This should not be a big deal for commuters, but I can see it being a bit of a hassle for moms with strollers and the elderly, as getting to the booth and the gate requires some additional stairs to go up. It will be interesting to see what this looks like when completed (and who knows when that will be).
