Behold, the Latest Gowanus Hotel!

What you see above is a rendering of the hotel planned for a lot on Degraw Street between 3rd and 4th avenues, a property that's set to be the latest addition to the swelling Gowanus Hotel District. The architect on the project is Kutnicki Bernstein, and its developer, Alec Shtromandel, reports that "we will be commencing work in 8 weeks time, and should be finished in 12 months." Before this one's finished, the hotel at President Street and 3rd Avenue, which is now almost fully constructed, should be open. Meanwhile, work's under way at the future Fairfield Inn site on 3rd Ave between Douglass and Butler. All of which is to say that it's seeming likely that six Gowanus hotels (existing stock=Le Bleu, Holiday Inn Express, and Comfort Inn) will be up and running in a year or so. Three additional hotels, meanwhile, are planned for the neighborhood. Councilman Bill de Blasio has categorized the Gowanus hotel boomlet as something of a red light district in the making. Time will tell!

Who's going to stay in all these places?
Posted by: itsagas at July 29, 2008 9:38 AM
itsagas...haven't you been reading the real estate threads??? Europeans with Euros coming to buy brownstones!!!
Otherwise they will turn into the much-needed "hot sheet" red light district. There's been a severe lack of short-time hotels since the mutant real estate bubble began inflating. Aren't even any cheap places over in hell's Kitchen anymore for a quickie!!!

itsagas, exactly. There can't be this much demand for a hotel in this part of Brooklyn.
I also wonder if some of these "hotels" are being constructed with an eye to converting them into housing when the economy balances out.

with a room in Manhattan costing $350 or more, frugal travelers will flock to these hotels near mass transit. Yes there is always a risk that they will become hot sheets but if the police enforce the rules and threaten the hotels with seizure that won't happen(much) either....The Governor needs a new hotel for his girl friends(and I don't meant Eliot)....

Is it actually cardboard?

How much lipstick are they putting on the Wyckoff Houses?

this looks like something i would have drawn using PrintShop on my Apple IIe in 1985.

Or is it the opening for a new Mr. Rogers type show?
Posted by: superstooper at July 29, 2008 10:25 AM
Rode my bike past the Comfort Inn on Butler between 3rd and 4th I think it is. The guests standing outside and getting out of their cars looked SO uncomfortable. Welcome to Brooklyn and one of the ugliest streets imaginable.

Or is it a screenprint from SimCity?

Biff- You don't recognize Microsoft clip art? Hmmphf. You probably don't use Clippy either. :-)

I did hear that Hotel Le Jolie (Hotel Le Bleu's sister hotel in Williamsburg) has indeed started hourly rates. You have to ask about it, obviously.
With that said, as a Park Slope resident and someone who has not only had guests stay at the Comfort Inn as well as the Hotel Le Bleu, I think most of these will do ok. I had two friends from Berlin who stayed at Le Bleu and loved it. They are more used to the ugly, industrial stuff in many parts of Europe. It's cool over there to be in NYC and be in an area like Gowanus. And you can't beat the price when compared to Manhattan.
With all those new clubs opening up down there, I can see the allure.
I prefer my place up the hill, but love walking around down by the Gowanus. I see huge potential.

Could see some hot Cattyshack crowd there coming from Europe for local action!!!

Clippy? Sounds like the name of a barber on the new Mr. Rogers type show superstooper referenced above.

Your personal MS office assistant- er.. concierge.(check your help menu)

Do you mean that the annoying animated paper clip with the big eyes and eyebrows that, rather than actually, helping ends up driving most MS Office users crazy trying to figure out how to get rid of the damn thing?
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 29, 2008 1:25 PM
That rendering looks like a hotel in south park.
Posted by: MotoGP at July 29, 2008 1:46 PM
You're right, MotoGP, it's very South Park-ish!

A little respect for Clippy, please. However I can tell you several ways to- er- kill him off, but he's so CUTE, Biff!!
Posted by: bxgrl at July 29, 2008 2:38 PM
bxgrl, thanks, but I said it drives "most" users crazy. Of course I'm incredibly computer savvy and immediately found a way to get rid of him (or is it a her?): I just put some duct tape on the corner of my monitor.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 29, 2008 2:42 PM
duct tape......okaaay! You buried Clippy alive? Oh cruel anti-Clippy world. We'll discuss this further!
Posted by: bxgrl at July 29, 2008 4:05 PM
bxgrl, please immediately stop this back and forth lest we be accused of hiding out again a la the infamous Grocery Store thread!
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 29, 2008 4:11 PM
Biff...those were the days!!! I think that was the same day I outed myself as BoldTypeGuest as well. Glory days!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at July 29, 2008 4:41 PM
Yeah Dave, fun times. But I have to say I really prefer the relative civility here since the registration requirement, despite predictions that you and I would ruin everything once it started...seems the faded type trolls were wrong all along.
Posted by: Biff Champion at July 29, 2008 4:59 PM
Actually it seems some of the faded type trolls just got log in's. PropJoe was certainly one of them.
I do agree that the new system is good, although the comments seem to be about 1/3 of what they used to be.
Posted by: 11217 at July 29, 2008 5:03 PM
Yes but a lot of the commentary were the trolls doing nothing more than ranting and harrassing. I don't know- I think discussions get pretty lively still, but I certainly enjoy them more because they seem more substantive and less personal attacks. Or at least less attacks on posters that have nothing to do with the topics at hand.
Yeah- I miss the grocery Store, but you don't like recessed lighting anyway. (didn't the dairy case personally offend you?) I remember that thread, Dave! I thought the computer would have a meltdown.
Posted by: bxgrl at July 29, 2008 5:14 PM
If I recall, I made a joke re: the recessed lighting - yes, I think the dairy case was involved - and the rest is history.
