Streetlevel: RICE Cafe Debuts at the Pop-Up Park

That's great because at the other locations they're food sucks. Here's some black beans I poured out of can and reheated.

RICE SUCKS ASS. Frankly, black beans reheated out of a can has more flavor than anything they serve at Rice. Which leads me to wonder, why are there always people eating there?

@2:55: People are eating there because most people would eat garbage on a stick if that's what you offered. And look at most tourists. They travel to a place like NYC and look for Applebee's or Olive Garden.

Hey, 'toner, thanks for the kid-friendly food report. But inquiring families want to know: are there other kid-friendly things to do at the pop-up park? It's hard to tell from the renderings. Is it worth the schlep? Keep in mind that most families in Brooklyn don't drive, so we'll be taking the F train with that looooong walk up from the platform.

their website claims they use only organic foods. Anyone know if that's right? Or even verifiable? Seems kinda unlikely (and a little dirty) to me.

It's only a schlep if you live out in some hinterland and need to take the F. Those who live in the respectable parts of Brooklyn can get here quite easily.

Here's more info on PIER 1:

SUMMER '08 @ PIER 1 (the pop-up park) will be operating June 26 - Labor Day, from 10:00am-10:00pm, 7 days a week. The site is managed and operated by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy.

PIER 1 will feature a cafe (open at noon), picnic tables, landscaping with some trees and grass, and a sand play area.

A free shuttle with stops at Borough Hall and the High Street (Cadman Plaza West) subway stations will run to the site on Fridays (5:00pm-10:30pm) and Saturdays and Sundays (10:00pm-10:30pm).
