Streetlevel: Modell's Now Open on Fulton Mall

We're a couple weeks late on this one, but it wasn't until we biked through the Fulton Mall yesterday that we noticed that the new Modell's, the opening of which we'd written about back in March, had in fact opened. According to an employee, the corner location opened for business two weeks ago. Anyone been by?

I was in there tuesday. I think someone at Modell's had a brainfart. I don't see how with the recession they will be able to make money.

And why is this newsworthy? Maybe you can also cover openings of Burger Kings, Verizon stores, or ATM locations too.

Oh that's nice. Yet another sneaker store in Fulton Mall.
Maybe if some kids didn't buy a new pair of $100 sneakers every month they could pay for college or buy a house.
Opening a glut of stores like this (like cell phone stores and electronics stores too) in communities where people should be spending their money more wisely is immoral.

So, more importantly when is Amy Ruth's opening on Smith. Looks closer to finish but seems like forever already.
(but I do love Modells too but this looks much smaller than the old Fulton mall Modells)

Excuse me, but it is EXTREMELY newsworthy that he got an employee at Modell's to acknowledge his presence, let alone speak to him.
Posted by: guest at June 5, 2008 2:53 PM
Oh come on, 2.46, Modell's doesn't sell hot kicks, and you need to climb down off of that high horse. How much do your shoes cost?

Oh that's nice.

I weent there last weekend and it's awesome. Huge, lots of variety, and the best part was that the customer service was EXCELLENT. I'm serious. People were actually courteous and helpful? In brooklyn?
I'll be back.

sorry - I meant Amy Ruth's on Fulton St near corner of SMith st.
Posted by: guest at June 5, 2008 3:57 PM
Amy Ruth's (mmmmmmmmmm waffles and chicken mmmmmmmmmmmm)is supposed to open where the old Gage and Tollners/TGI Fridays were (on fulton st). they are a legend up on 116th st..worth the trip. I for one can't wait for them to open here in brooklyn!!
Posted by: guest at June 5, 2008 3:59 PM
Amy Ruth's is opening on Fulton Mall, near the intersection with Smith. I know I'm not the only one eagerly awaiting their arrival.

Modell's has been around since forever, they aren't some sneaker heaven wannabee. The fact that they consider the Fulton Mall to be worthy of an upgrade and new store is a sign that they are still committed to Bklyn for the long haul.
The old store has been there for at least 30 or more years. They probably hold the record.
A&S - gone
Woolworth's - gone
May's - gone
McCrory's - gone
There were some others on the Conway side of the street whose names I can't even remember. What was at the Conway's location? Anyone remember?

Hey, maybe some members of FUREE could get jobs here.
Posted by: guest at June 5, 2008 4:18 PM
Actually, I walk by there on my way to the train every morning. The morning it opened (a week or so ago?) there was a line going around the block. I couldn't imagine why people would be waiting in line at 9 am for a Modell's opening. I figured someone somewhat famous might be there for the ribbon cutting?

"you need to climb down off of that high horse. How much do your shoes cost?"
My sneakers cost $50 and I buy two pairs over the period of a year. I wear a pair until they get too dusty then they become garden shoes.
We also live debt-free. And we own, not rent.

They were giving away Yankees tickets...

while you're at it you should also tardily report the closing of the duffield youngworld, which you tardily reported the opening of in april.

5:48 Give us all a break and get a life!!!!
5:15 What are you trying to insinuate? I own several pairs of $100 sneakers and own my home. I like quality.. And what?

2:29 - please cut it out. you sound like an ass and come off as craving attention.

Long time Brooklynite-
I think you are thinking about Martin's and Korvettes. They were the two stores on the north side of Fulton.
To all the rest of you, Modell's is actually a great sporting goods store. They actually sell the equipment needed for sports including bats, balls, helmets, pucks, sticks etc. Not to mention they've got a huge selection of workout and fitness equipement like barbells. Plus they've been on the mall for closer to 40 years.

Macy's on Fulton Mall closed?
Posted by: guest at June 5, 2008 10:46 PM
$100 dollar sneakers aren't about quality, they're about marketing. Any 1st Grader knows that. Who knew Kindergarten Kids were posting on here?
Posted by: guest at June 5, 2008 11:28 PM
Cell phone stores, fake jesus pieces, sneaker stores. That's all a ghetto will ever need.

5:17, you may be debt-free, but your sanctimony sucks. Tell me, should there be less bank branches in affluent neighborhoods too? Do they encourage too many people to think they're investing responsibly?

Amy Ruths was supposed to open up on Vlentines day but put it off because of some paperwork associated to the Liquor license. As soon as that comes through, they will open. I can't wait to see the space inside. I've never been in there before.

As they were renovating this, I was hoping they'd restore the corner of the building which originally was curved. When they didn't do that, I assumed it was because they wanted the extra square footage of ground floor retail. Now that it's open, it doesn't have anything on the ground floor except an escalator and elevators. Would it have been expensive to restore the original shape of the building?

Mays not Macys..
Get glasses Alice!
BTW my sneakers costs 250.00. I brought them 3 yrs ago and I can still rock them now. Skippies just dont last long and oh I own too.

Huh?? Nice total lack of logic, there.
I am HARDLY the first person on the planet to say people in low income neighborhoods aren't spending their money on the right things.
Obama said it too.
This is an actual, real, ongoing topic of discussion among leaders in low income communities. People who actually care about those people would know that.
Posted by: guest at June 6, 2008 4:01 PM
Such a good point, Trudylou. The facade is hideous and they absolutely should have restored the curved front.
Posted by: guest at June 6, 2008 4:05 PM
Is "Obama said it too" going to be the new thing now?
