Streetlevel: Bar Olivino Opens

The Olivino empire (well, if two stores constitutes an empire) took another giant step forward with the soft opening this past weekend of Bar Olivino at 899 Fulton Street in Clinton Hill. As we previously reported, offerings will include charcuterie and olives in addition to beer and affordable wines by the glass. Olivino opens at 5 p.m. every day except Tuesday, when it's closed.

I am very happy to see this has opened. as a long-time resident of the neighborhood I've been wondering why nothing of this sort has opened on Fulton St. before. A friend of mine thought it might have to do with the number of churches on Fulton and the difficulty of getting a liquor license nearby houses of worship. that makes sense to me. what doesn't make sense is why this stretch of Fulton St. (Classon to Clinton) doesn't have a more varied business base.

I like eating Island food, shopping at bodegas, fast-food chinese as much as anyone else but why aren't there more options? If someone wanted to open a few more nice sit-down restaurants and nice neighborhoody bars I'm sure they would make a killing.

It's true. Given the droves of people exiting the subway at Clinton/Washington these days, businesses like a decent bagel place would do really well on this stretch. Good luck to Bar Olivino.

i hope they'll open one soon next to their other store in BedStuy: that is on my block and we desperately need a good mellow wine bar around there!!

Another business that will hopefully inject life into that desolate stretch of Fulton. Hurrah! I'll be sure to do my bit and drop in for a glass or two.

And now (returning with a vengeance to a pet peeve) for a decent grocery store located within a stone's throw that sells fresh produce and doesn't smell of day-old ass. Any enterprising souls out there listening? (voice trailing off folornly)...any at all?

actually, green planet has some good produce - not a ton of selection, but most things you need for a salad.
