Slope Eyesore May Have Timely End

slope-dump-06-2008.JPG
5th Avenue's "This is Not a Toilet" building may finally be in its end days. The DOB's given the structure's owner the go ahead to put it out of its misery. (The city disapproved an initial filing to replace it.) Rat poison signs were recently posted on the building's exterior, the typical prelude to the wrecking ball.

why can't they renovate it???

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 11:14 AM

I'm gonna miss my toilet

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 11:32 AM

Renovate what? The barely standing, rotted shell?

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 11:39 AM

whatever ... that's one eyesore down, two to go.

Have you seen the Legion Hall next door (where that old dude is sitting) and the random "yard sale guy" building next to the Legion Hall?!?!

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 11:41 AM

You know, I know know specifics of these buildings, but I'm sick and tired of people calling things "eyesores".

Unless you lived in NYC in the 1970s./1980s and saw REAL decrepit buildings, you have no idea what you're talking about when you call these places eyesores.

Of all the issues this city faces with in real estate, "eyesores" are right at the bottom.

Heck, the old NYC apartment I grew up in was called an "eyesore" back in the day. Nowadays it's a lovely pre-War building with old fixtures.

Posted by: Jack at June 20, 2008 11:58 AM

You don't know jack, Jack.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 12:01 PM

looks like an eyesore to me...worse than a lot in Bed Stuy!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 20, 2008 12:06 PM

baaaack in my day we had REAL eyesores!

this is like a minor eye irritation or insignificant corneal abrasion ... no way is it a real sore.

darn youngsters don't know an eyesore from a buggy whip, I say.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, Jack, please STFU.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 12:08 PM

That Legion Hall next door is pretty much the last vestige of old South Brooklyn that hasn't yet succumbed to the yuppie infestation of 5th Avenue.

Posted by: Flatbushwhacker at June 20, 2008 12:13 PM

I always thought it contributed to the edginess of the neighborhood.
1.4 mil, maybe 1.2 with the down turned economy.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 12:18 PM

Yes, how we all long for the old Fifth Avenue.

Not.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 12:21 PM

More yuppies ruining the character of the neighborhood, because everything has to change for them

Real new yorkers crap in doorways, if you don't like it you should go back to ohio

What will happen to our culture

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 12:25 PM

Flatbushwhacker and Jack should go hang-out in the PJs in the Bronx before they lose their charm ... you know .. pre-yuppie invasion.

Idiots.

Yes, bring back the good old days of drugs, dollar stores and guys hanging outside the liquor store.

People like this are so ignorant .. Did anyone read the article that profiles most of the renters in Park Slope?! Mostly creative types in their late 20's and early 30's.

Flatbushwhacker and Jack drivel is just socio-economic-bitterness disguised as nostalgia.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 12:28 PM

12:28 writes ..."socio-economic-bitterness disguised as nostalgia."

That's one to write down and remember. Thanks for coming up with that.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 20, 2008 12:33 PM

Well, Jack, I did live "in NYC in the 1970s./1980s and saw REAL decrepit buildings." In fact, I lived right around where these buildings are and now do so again. And these POS have been a blight for 30 years. "Slope Eyesore May Have Timely End?" Well past time, if you ask me.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 12:36 PM

"daveinbedstuy is a liar, a troll and an asshole."

That's one to write down and remember.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 12:44 PM

Is there any post where the comments don't descend into "gritty NYC vs. the present"?

I'm starting to think this blog has run its course.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 12:45 PM

me daveinbedstuy. me like little words. me hungry, me wet pants.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 12:54 PM

What? You mean nobody's landmarked that historical facade yet?

Posted by: Steve at June 20, 2008 12:54 PM

It looks like a row of historic two-story buildings with beautiful cornices. Knocking one down will leave a gap and diminissh the whole row. How dumb. Too bad it is not part of an historic district.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:10 PM

I'm surprised that brownstoner and the dddb crowd are not calling for this building to be landmarked.

That old dude looks like he's about to run inside to grab a shotgun.

So, what's the scoop here? Daveinbedstuy=biff=bxgl=BTG? Just so I have it right.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:13 PM

Yeah too bad - because there is a real shortage of buildings with nice cornices -

There is nothing historic (other than being old), practical or beneficial in preserving these crappy buildings - they actually do not fit in the character of 5th Ave (arent all you people into context) and the sooner they are replaced with proper buildings that allow for ground floor retail and 3-5 stories of residential upstairs, the better.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:16 PM

As an owner of a property close to this one, I am very glad its getting torn down. Just like 11:41 said "two more to go".

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:16 PM

1:13....i invented BTG to have some fun and everyone's crying that I ruined brownstoner because they have nothing else to add.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 20, 2008 1:21 PM

Yeah! Put up a Richard Meier building! Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn will one day be as famous as that the other Fifth Avenue!

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:27 PM

There's got to be a ton of unused FAR between those three buildings.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:28 PM

Those Italian buildings are a common site in many cities and for the money not worth renovating. They are architecturally nothing of importance and if you have enough money to throw away, I'm sure some contractor will love. Every building has a life span and those that are well kept survive longer. This one needs hospice and burial.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:28 PM

I meant Italianate

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:29 PM

Hey what exactly does the spray painted box with an 'X' in it mean? The letters RO? I know it's a warning of some sort to the fire department about the condition of the building, but where does it come from? Translation please.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:31 PM

"Daveinbedstuy=biff=bxgl=BTG?"

NO!

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:31 PM

We must save this building!!! I took it in the pooper for the first time in the upstairs apartment back in 87.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:34 PM

i think 'ro' means no or damaged roof on building

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:37 PM

Conversations on this site are getting worse. It's like trying to ask for directions surrounded by interrupting annoying three year olds. Bold type>Not bold type... Where's the delete button BSTONE!

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:38 PM

I believe the symbols mean the place has no floor.

This building is a burned-out decaying hulk. There is no reason to try to save what little remains of it.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:39 PM

I dare anyone to go in the social club next door and start making a loud cell phone call.

Bunch of annoying yuppies.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:44 PM

Are those yuppies in that "social club?

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:53 PM

The Boxed in X is a warning to firefighters indicating the property is dangerous to enter in the case of a fire. RO 220 is a code for specifics of the dangers contained therein.
Most of the time abandoned or properties to be demolished have the printed scuba diving like plaque on one of the entrances or in an obvious window.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 1:58 PM

Yup. My dad was a volunteer firefighter for decades. The R0 220 is code for them.

Check out this fantastic picture that Brooklyn G Girl had posted last year.

How many of you recognize him??

Posted by: Nokilissa at June 20, 2008 2:13 PM

Does anyone remember the fire in this building? If I recall correctly, it involved squatters and a gas lamp.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 2:38 PM

It may come as a shock to you, 12:28 but not everybody aspires to be surrounded by self-described "creative types in their 20s and 30s" or the bars and restaurants that cater to them.

That neighborhood has become so monolithic and boring, I'm glad I cashed in and moved on when I did.

Posted by: Flatbushwhacker at June 20, 2008 2:39 PM

Trust me, Flatbushwacker, so are we.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 2:46 PM

flatbushwacker must be kicking himself now for selling!

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 2:54 PM

Nokilissa - That's an amazing picture. 5 years from now people will look at that and never guess that scene to be out of 5th avenue! Thanks for sharing

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 2:55 PM

Remember the time the dude was walking down the street and the guy said something to him? Man what a memory.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 3:00 PM

5 years from now that guy will still be there, sitting in that same chair, same "merchandise" chained to the front of the building.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 3:23 PM

We should buy all his stuff in 1 day. Just pick a date and buy something.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 3:31 PM

well put flatbushwhacker.im so sick of these(silver spoon in the mouth)yuppies thinking their money makes them better than other people.it makes me feel so good everytime i hear about one of these "creative types" getting robbed and smacked up on the streets of BK.hope it happends more often.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 4:55 PM

You're making Baby Jesus cry, 4:55.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 5:24 PM

Except being educated, taking of your home, and contributing to society IS being better than people who don't.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 5:37 PM

i'd rather have a silver spoon in my mouth, 4:55 over the rusty aluminum one you seem to have shoved up your a**hole.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 7:03 PM

I'm not really sure how most of those arts and media jobs are contributing to society, to be honest. One could make an argument that the residents of Park Slope contributed more when policemen and teachers could actually afford to live there.

Posted by: Heather at June 20, 2008 8:06 PM

7:03

Aluminum does not rust.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 9:32 PM

aluminum oxidizes, which is the aluminum version of rust. It gets little dark bumpy spots. Gross. Aluminum is not a great outdoor material unless it is coated.

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 9:37 PM

8:06 = Biff

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 10:32 PM

Wow, a lot of anonymous hate from commenters tonight. Let me clarify it a bit:
I think that building SHOULD come down. It's a mess.

But I'm as sick of the word "eyesore" as I am about the word "luxury". Just another stupid shorthand phrase that's used in pikcu-up debates. You know the Atlantic Center is an "eyesore"—and a "legsore" if you want to walk to Circuit City—but it's not the same as this storefront.

Also, most of the apartments being sold—oversold?—in Brooklyn South are far from "luxury". Especially if it's new construction. They're just apartments.

Posted by: Jack at June 20, 2008 10:46 PM

has anyone else noticed that brooklyn old timers tend to think brooklyn has improved enough from when it was a real shithole so everyone should shut up and stop trying to make things better anymore.

Posted by: slick at June 21, 2008 2:48 AM

slick = bxgrl

Posted by: guest at June 21, 2008 4:51 PM

rust is oxidation of iron. Metal combining with oxygen molecules.

slick=legion=bizarro what=moron

Posted by: guest at June 22, 2008 11:47 AM

I saw someone buying something from the chained in front of his building guy the other day.

Posted by: guest at June 22, 2008 12:46 PM

Forget eyesore. Try hazard. That building is dangerous. There is a death trap in the guise of a cellar door out front with two molecules of rust and a rubber mat the only things between an unwary pedestrian and a quick demise.

I hope the whole row, from the junk store next to the Chip Shop, to the Legion hall/Mafia hangout, to this craptacular ruin, all get torn down and something with some nice retail and new walkup apartments go up. Four story max.

Expensive apartments. Not "affordable housing." No section-8 vouchers, please.
