Garden of the Day: Brooklyn Japanese?

Today's Garden of the Day comes from Stuyvesant Heights...I actually got inspired to redo our yard after seeing some of the submissions on Brownstoner. The lady and I are not the green sort, but we think that it turned out fine. One caveat for your readers is that it is a young garden (only planted a week ago) and it will fill in over time. We intentionally purchased younger plants to see the garden grow and grow with it.

About the yard...the total yard space is about 25' wide by 40' deep half the depth is a concrete and stone patio space (not pictured) the balance is a planted garden. Before we started, the yard was an overgrown mess of weeds and totally out of control ivy. We wanted to create an oasis-like space and a Brooklyn rendition of a Japanese garden type thing. Not sure if we hit the mark, but the Mrs. and I really like how everything turned out. We intentionally only placed bamboo fencing around the stone patio area. We wanted to create the illusion of a separate outdoor room. The rest of the fence will eventually be covered in ivy...kind of like an envelop of green (a la the Wrigley Field outfield wall)

I highly recommend my landscaper! The total budget for our gardens (he also planted our front yard) was $2,500. He managed to do everything for $2,700 including all materials and labor! I will supply his info upon request to anyone interested.

Looks great. How big a table and how many chairs can you fit on that patio area?

This is really lovely -- am am a garden diy-er working toward something like this in stages. What borders the stone path? Is that like Belgian block?

Speaking for myself, I spent so much time and energy getting rid of ivy that I never want any of it growing anywhere in my garden again. Even though the look of an ivy-covered fence is very serene, I find it also bug-promoting and not terribly pleasant to sit near. Just my two cents.

Thanks & it looks great. I'm so happy to see more gardens in Bed Stuy instead of the concrete junk jungle in most backyards.

Thanks for all the praise!!! I was a bit worried that people would rip the garden apart.

I have asked Jeff, my landscaper, to post on this thread with his contact information. Really great guy with some fantastic ideas.

Someone asked about chairs and table. Well we envisioned placing an out door sofa there so that we could kind of just lounge. The area not pictured is where the table and chairs will be placed. However, I suppose the patio is big enough to fit a standard size outdoor table and chair set.

I think the lay out and plantings are absolutely lovely. However, I don't want to be mean, but have you considered changing the white stone to a more nature-friendly tone (i.e., greyish or yellowish/off-white-ish) - I don't mean to me mean but that white rock is a little tacky, and reminiscent of old school Carroll Gardens. It's easy and cheap to switch the gravel to something that blends better with the landscape.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I was very happy with the outcome and our garden owners selection of the maiden grass was a great touch for the patio. I can be reached at 520 904 3927 or email at jeffsecor@gmail.com
Enjoy

Beautiful! Are those bluestone pavers? Tumbled? Do you know where they're from? What's the size? thanks!

Awesome garden. I also would have preferred a darker gravel, but that's just nitpicking.

Love it.

I've seen quite a few Japanese-style gardens use white gravel, and it looks very nice. I prefer a more natural stone color myself, but I've got white rocks in my garden too...which is a decision I'm coming to regret. But that's ok, not a travesty of taste, just not the best decision for me to have made.

care to share you feelings of regret?

WOW great place to advertise. Hmmm.

Secor, as in Secor Farm in Mahwah?

Posted by: guest at June 20, 2008 9:03 PM

I always see white rock in Japanese or Japanese inspired gardens too. I'm a fan of how it bounces light up into a space too. Which is especially good for shady or partial shade city gardens.

Very nice!

I like the idea of a lounge seating area too. I've thought that eventually when we're ready to invest in all new outdoor furniture, we'd have a big sectional sofa and armchairs on our patio instead of a table and chairs. So much more relaxing and leisurely and actually could fit more people. It also doesn't stop them from eating. You don't have to have a dining table in order to dine.

I 100% 'second' the recommendation of Jeff. He took machete to our weed-garden and within days transformed it from the neighborhood eyesore to a rather lovely place to hang out... much to the delight of my (more garden-inclined) neighbors.

Love the white rock and the contrast with the black soil and grey stones.
