Development Watch: 109 Gold Street
After demolishing (illegally, at times) St. George's Church at the corner of Gold and York in Vinegar, the developer (who years ago also tore down nearby St. Ann's Church) received the green-light to build the seven-story residential building that will replace it. Given the site's location across from the projects, our expectations have been pretty low for the design. We haven't seen renderings yet, but it turns out that the architect is Kutnicki Bernstein which, regardless of how you feel about its style, is hardly a bottom-of-the-barrel firm, so maybe this one will surprise on the upside.

What's going on at Prince and Tillary? I walk down that dead-end street from time to time, and I was there om Monday and noticed lots of construction in the empty lot as well as what look like demolishing (or repair) of one of the storage facilities. That street has always been so odd - tucked between the BQE and bridge. Plus, the same cars are always there (never moved). So close to Gold, thought people who live down there might know...

I hope this building offers bullet proof windows. They will also need to build this building out of books to ward off the project people. People from the projects hate books. It's their kryptonite.

Posts about this area always bring out the most idiotic and hateful comments. And Brownstoner, your lead-ins consistently help to set that tone.
99 Gold failed because it was overpriced and had many apartments with awkward layouts due to the fact that the building was a conversion project. Rather than adjust prices accordingly, the developer held out and the building turned rental when a little under half its units were in contract.
If you think this is a marginal block, then you should applaud people who are trying to revitalize the area with new buildings and more housing.
I don't believe that 99 Gold residents are getting mugged. In fact, most of the neighborhood crime goes on in prime Dumbo --some pesky teens causing trouble in the shops and random car break-ins at night.

actually live on this street and project crime is common - as are the not so random gun shots at night. some neighbors have had their windows smashed around the three times each. while some of this is done by "kids" - poverty doesn't force people to grow up with so little regard for anyone else. that's just an excuse. farragut is a cesspool of humanity.
