Development Watch: 316 Bergen Street

316-bergen-06-2008.jpg
A reader sent in the photo above, which shows demolition work on a couple of buildings on Bergen Street between 3rd and 4th avenues. The buildings will be replaced by a 7-story, 39-unit job c/o Karl Fischer, according to DOB filings. (Sadly, no intimation of what the development will look like like on Fischer's website.) That is going to be a big building, but not 11 stories and 25 feet wide like Mr. Scarano's building down the block. Much better and to-scale with the block and surrounding area, and that corner has been a blight for some time, so a decent development there can only be a good thing.

Agreed. Development is needed on this block, and this fits in much better to the scale of the block than the Scarano monstrosity. As someone who lives close by, this is a good thing--assuming the building looks relatively tasteful.

ah yes! perhaps it is good thing if you live "nearby", but not if you live behind it! I live on St. Marks, and this is the view from my kitchen window. I don't really enjoy construction workers peering into my windows in the morning as I am making breakfast. Here goes the continuous months of construction noise & dust that I will have to deal with.
