Development Watch: 135 5th Avenue

A small building is planned for the corner of 5th Avenue and St. Johns Place, replacing a vacant lot and bringing some rare new construction to the North Slope retail drag. A crew's been doing prep work on the site over the past month or so, and DOB filings say a five-story, four-unit structure's in the offing. The lot's been vacant as long as we can recall; anyone know if there was ever a building here? GMAP P*Shark DOB

I bet 100$ this will be a fedders building. Cause I know it won't be a Neutra.

Unfortunately, the filing includes a curb cut and parking for one car. What a nuisance, in such a transit-rich area.

Yet another building that hasn't even broken ground and you guys are already whining about it. There's no pleasing some people.

You beat me too it. I took pics of this site yesterday and was going to send them to you!
Let's hope for a retail space on the bottom.

DOB link claims that the existing building was demolished in 1913 (!?). Not sure if that's plausible.

There was a building there in the early 50's with a bar on the ground floor. As a kid, we used to sneak in the side door, on St. John's, to watch their TV which was one of the few in the neighborhood at that time. We did not get a TV in our home until about a year or so later. So, the building could not have been demolished in 1913.

Suprised you cover this and yet no comment on the 12 story building by Ismael Levya at 150 4th Ave - down the block from this) - where those 4-5 boarded up Brownstones were for years - looks like they are starting construction.

Fifth Ave desperately needs another sushi place.

I walk by this every morning and have been wondering too. The construction signs have a contractors name with "homes" in it, but not sure if that means it will be some sort of residential dwelling or now.
Along those lines, on my block of Union (bt 4th & 5th), there's notice of a 10-unit condo building going up. Right now it's a vacant lot and has been since I moved here, but there are I-beams laying in there now and a sign announcing the building of a condo. It's either 701 or 710. I haven't seen much about that either.
And yeah, what's up with that colossal building going up on 4th, north slope, away from argyle/crest/novo. I haven't seen mention of that anywhere and that construction is well underway.

Yeah that thing at 12th St and 4th Ave is freaking huge yet I haven't seen any mention of it - does anyone have a link to more info?

A one-car driveway is a nuisance? Get a grip. High-class problems...
Posted by: guest at June 6, 2008 6:22 PM
I know the architect - it will be a 5 story building, with retail on the ground floor and apartments above.
Posted by: guest at June 6, 2008 8:17 PM
8;17 if you know the architect then fill us in on the look of the building, 5 story with retail on the ground floor tells us nothing that we do not already know.

Of course there was a buidling there once - that's obvious from the site.
