4th Ave Phallus Will be a Rental
Our dreams of finding out what a developer could possibly charge for people to buy a unit the 4th Avenue sliver on Carroll Street have been forever dashed. The eight units in the building will be rentals, according to the construction crew on the job. Building amenities include easy access to Cattyshack, the lesbian bar next door. Thoughts on what these'll rent for? We'll guess around $2,800 a month.

Look on the bright side: at least tenants won't have to go far for a cold beer!

I don't know why, but I sort of like that building. maybe cuz it's so thin, unlike the alexanderplatz buildings on 4th ave like NOVO

I think I have just gone blind looking at this photo.

It is actually attractive when viewed coming north on 4th Ave - not that I'd expect too many Brownstoners from acknowledging that.

What's up with the world's smallest (and perhaps deadliest) balconies?
Posted by: zinka at June 11, 2008 12:38 PM
We only WISH 4th Avenue looked like Alexanderplatz and Karl Marx Allee! Would be much better than what is there, for sure!

berlinification

Maybe this is really obvious, but if you're renting you don't have to fall in love with the design or architecture.
If the layout's nice and there's a balcony, what's not to like .. .

Does that thing sway in a strong wind? :-)

Wow it is starting to look like Park Ave more and more on 4th. NOT.

All new buildings suck. Landmark everything. I love vacant lots. Buck Fush. Free Mumia.

Will Novo follow after most contract holders will probably bail out come end of June?

"Look on the bright side: at least tenants won't have to go far for a cold beer!"
not to mention plenty of hot lesbian action!!!!
Posted by: guest at June 11, 2008 1:38 PM
Is that the closest lesbian bar to the Brighton Beach Russian condo???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at June 11, 2008 1:41 PM
I walk by the Cattyshack every night and I havent seen a 'hot' one yet - in fact 95% of the chicks going in there look and act like they could kick the crap out of the NY Giants.
Posted by: guest at June 11, 2008 1:47 PM
Being close to the Cattyshack is no 'amenity' - that bar can be rough (seriously) - I've seem some pretty vicious fights and other druken behavior outside there - on a regular basis.
Doesnt seem to attract to many lipstick lesbians thats for sure.

"Doesnt seem to attract to many lipstick lesbians thats for sure."
Once word gets out that 4th truly IS the New Park Avenue, the lipsticks will move in and kick the living shit out of the bike dykes.

better girlz who are girls than girlz trying to be something they aren't.
Posted by: guest at June 11, 2008 3:43 PM
those biker chicks are going to strap this building on and give it a go. I hope its got some vents on top cause that is going to be one hellava load.
Posted by: guest at June 11, 2008 3:52 PM
I actually like this building too.
The windows are a decent size relative to the width of the building. Plenty of light.

3:09 - "pansy girl" is an oxymoron.

I'm not that surprised that this building went the way of rentals. Did anyone notice that the new building on 18th street between 5th and 6th avenues is "luxury rentals" instead of being sold as condos? Now that one shocked me. With the size of the upper level private balconies I was sure it would be condos. The website is touting it as the south slope luxury rentals with free laundry rooms and adjacent storage lockers, parking garage, etc. Those are going for about $2,000 plus in light of the amenities offered. (The shame of this building is that the lower level balconies are small and are partially taken up by the unsightly A.C. units and accompanying wires) Is the rental of these types of buildings a sign that the condo buying trend in Brooklyn is slowing down? Or is it simply more cost effective for some of these developments to rent the units as opposed to selling them?

You're an oxymoron 4:52

Right next to the Lesbian Bar? Buy/Rent and sublet it out for short stay rates. Flip it a few times a night, make more than 2000 a month don't you think.
Posted by: guest at June 11, 2008 5:41 PM
One odd thing about this building is that the side facing Cattyshack has no windows. As in zero.

That's because it's lot line. Catty Shack has the air rights on that side.

Wow- 8 unit rental? I pass by this building everyday- and I was convincied it would be a hotel. 2 units on each floor- but who would build a 16 room hotel? As a rental- seems weird- but on the plus side- its probably handicapped accessible- with an elavator which is a plus. Not a lot of options for people with special needs in the neighborhood.

Another fine addition to the Avenue of the Fuglies.
Posted by: guest at June 12, 2008 12:13 PM
I haven't seen the bldg in person-- are there any windows on the south (Carroll St) side?
Posted by: guest at June 12, 2008 1:07 PM
Yes, there are windows on the Carroll St side.
It doesn't help the aesthetics much.
