Where's the Smallest, Coolest Apartment? Fort Greene

Every year, interior design blog Apartment Therapy holds its Smallest, Coolest Apartment contest, soliciting submissions from creative apartment dwellers across the globe. The 2008 winner? A couple residing in a 460-square-foot studio in Fort Greene. Pretty impressive!

I have to say this is a pretty cool apartment. Pretty cool nabe, too.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 11:43 AM

cute if you're fourteen.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 11:51 AM

there's a poltergeist in the ceiling.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 12:02 PM

so then you like it, 11:51?

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 12:03 PM

The city is full of forty somethings who are living in the same little shoebox they rented right our of school and now they are stuck there. Forever.
This apartment is ridiculous for anyone over say, twenty-eight years old.

so then you like it, 11:51?

NO!
I am far from fourteen and I like big rooms with traditional furniture, real paintings, and candles in silver holders. This ain't me.

OK so you like what you like 12:24 - why put someone else down?

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 12:32 PM

big rooms and candles in silver holders....

hmmm...tried wysteria lane?

(p.s. people who need the things you describe and denounce others for not wanting or needing those things don't have very fulfilling lives on their own accord. just so you know...)

Great use of space. The loft bed with office underneath is very clever, as is all of the built in storage.

I don't think I could live in it with someone else though. You'd have to hide in the bathroom to get any personal space. It would have to be me and the cat.

Props to Tony and Hilary! I hired them to redesign a bathroom in my brownstone. They are both architects, consumate professionals, creative, and super easy to work with. I was very happy with their work and suggestions on the design/layout and would be happy to discuss further if anyone needs 2 great architects. Leave email/phone and I will respond.
FYI -the bathroom is almost finished and I can send pics and layout if interested.

The lady on the loft bed appears to be spinning something around to distract the cat, and it's not working.

Posted by: Brenda from Flatbush at May 27, 2008 1:20 PM

Brenda, that's funny. I'm not sure I would be spinning anything too rambunctiously up there, risking crashing through a glass coffee table below all for the sake of entertaining a pet.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 27, 2008 1:32 PM

funny, I thought she was making the bed, fluffing the pillows...

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 1:32 PM

very nice use of space, but i would be very worried about falling out of that bed!!

Posted by: spyfive at May 27, 2008 1:38 PM

how many times have you fallen out of a bed, 1:38?

it's such an odd thing to say...i've slept in a very low bed for years and never fallen out, so i'm not sure why it being farther above the ground would make it any more likely....

is falling out of high beds some sort of old waives tale?

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 2:04 PM

So is the Hospital Curtain around the loft for when things get even closer?!

Why not open the wall between the kitchen and living space?

Living simply is a requirment for a space like this and takes a special type of person. Bravo. Great space.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 2:13 PM

Does the elevated bed come with safety harnesses?

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 3:01 PM

2:04 - I fell out of a low bed and broke my collarbone... on a carpeted surface.

of course, I was 2 at the time, but it is possible!

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 3:34 PM

Hilary is making the bed (the apartment isn't haunted - yea!). We've never fallen out of bed (we've lived here for 3 years) - there is about 12" of wood around the mattress that acts as a sensory warning device. We would open up the space to the kitchen if we owned, but alas, we are renting and saving for a little share of brownstone brooklyn.

Posted by: pHdesign at May 27, 2008 4:55 PM

eeeuuh!
It looks like a cramped doctor's waiting room.
Who was this designed for, R2-D2?
OK, this is the very opposite of what one expects to see in a blog named "Brownstoner".
this is what one expects in blog named
"living tightly with plastics".

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 5:02 PM

Tony, congrats and thanks for posting. I think you've done a great job with the space and would be anxious to see what you would do with larger areas. Regarding the bed, maybe consider those warning grooves on the side like they have on the shoulder of the highway that would make a loud bumpity bump hum if you rolled onto them?

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 27, 2008 5:21 PM

I love it! I need someone like you at my house, I just can't afford it. I have not one ounce of creativity in my body. Nice job, you should be proud. Ignore the haters, they never leave this site.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 6:38 PM

looks completely unlivable.
the space was designed to be photographed
rather than to be a pleasant human habitation.

Ft Greene apartment is cute. The other apartment ...well ...just too small with all those children and a friggin smelly dog.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 9:42 PM
