Smith Street Gets Iced Out

uncle-louie-ices.JPG
Judging from the crowds swarming around the latest Uncle Louie G Italian Ice/Ice Cream outpost on Smith Street this weekend, the chain's newest location is already a hit. The storefront, near the corner of Atlantic, opened last week. In addition to a couple Park Slope locations and a few others in southern Brooklyn, Uncle Louie G has franchises all over the city. thats good stuff cant wait to go...

This is a perfect reason not to go to rip off BLUE MARBLE i will never go there again...

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 3:00 PM

I hate when he parks his bright yellow Hummer in front of the store. In the street or on the sidewalk. I guess he makes so much off of his customers that he can buy that absurd tank and drive it around our city streets. All I can do is vote with my wallet...

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 3:25 PM

Blue Marble and Uncle Louie G shouldn't even be compared to one another.

Blue Marble serves delicious, homemade, all natural ice cream and sorbets while Uncle Louie serves bland, mass-produced, additive-filled ices and ice cream. The fact that their ices turn your tongue unnatural colors for hours on end should be enough to stay away once you're old enough to know better. Uncle Louie is fine for kids, but a true connoisseur should know that the ice cream at Blue Marble is excellent.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 3:29 PM

is there, or didn't there used to be, a louie G outpost over on clinton or henry? is it still there?

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 3:31 PM

The one on Henry has in fact closed, most likely because their ice creams SUCKS. Really, how could anyone think otherwise? It boggles the mind. Plus, as noted above, the Hummer!

lemon ice king of corona queens

f louie g and his ilk

real ny'ers know

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 3:45 PM

I agree with 3:25.

That moron drives his disgusting penis subsitute all over town, getting fatter and fatter peddling crappy ice cream. Gross.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 3:54 PM

Gabby since Louie G's started in Brooklyn and in NY owned and operated - can you give us a little guide as to what criteria we should use to recognize when a local "mom & pop" business (which presumably on Brownstoner = good) becomes a "chain" (which obvioulsy on Brownstoner=evil) - Does it happen with the 2nd location (although you guys seem to still like the Smith + 5th Ave stores) or the 3rd. Does it matter if Pop is really really fat? or drives an ugly gas guzzler?. Since they are only opened 1/2 the year, should we count 2 locations as 1?

Just want to know so I know which stores to protest and complain about.

Thanks

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:17 PM

All you idiots, no matter what ice cream you eat, are idiots. GOOD HUMOR should be good enough for anyone and if it's not, go back where you came from.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:24 PM

crappy product = crappy store

period

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:25 PM

yogo monster is my favorite.

despite the asinine name.

and it's about 1000 less calories.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:27 PM

sorry, fewer calories...

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:28 PM

3:29pm you are a complete joke...

Blue marble is a complete rip off I went there once and got 2 small scoops that were in this plate it wasnt even a bowl and cost about $6....ANd the people there were jerk offs I was like you work in an ice cream store whats with the attitude...

I am not trying to compare the two its like comparing Haagen Dazz to Marinos italian ice... But an ice at Louie G's which is reasonably priced is worth it compared to getting ripped off and spend $30 on 4 people for ice cream...WHAT A JOKE you are 3:29pm get over yourself...

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:29 PM

How is spending $3 on colored ice different than $6 on homemade, all-natural, organic icecream.

I'd say the markup on the ice is a wee bit more...

Dumb*ss.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:37 PM

4:37 u are clueless... 2 scoops is literally about 5 spoonfulls I have never seen anything like that...

Id rather go with an ice not as many calories either FATTY....

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:43 PM

4:17 -- I think when a locally owned store expands to over 5 branches, it's gone beyond a local store to be a local chain. NTTIAWT -- I love Duane Reade, and that's the local chain to end all local chains. (The real question is when does a local chain become regional?) and anyway, Gabby was not busting on Louie G, just the other commenters.

FWIW, I don't get Louie G. The ices are eh at best. Much better ices are across the way at the Court Pastry Shop (through the side window). (I have never had theice cream, but after two disappointing ices, I never intend to go out of my way to try it).

Blue Marble is just not comprable. One, it's ice cream, not water ice. Two, it's organic, so the prices are going to be higher than what you would get elsewhere. Three, many flavors at BM simply are very tasty, but not every flavor is for everyone -- I don't get the non-sweet tasting culture flavor, but a lot of people seem to enjoy it.

The real comparison for Louie G would be Baskin Robbins -- a national chain with many locations in the same neighborhoods as Louie G.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:44 PM

2 scoops is more than plenty for me.

I'm not clueless, I've been to both Blue Marble and Uncle L's and I will not be back to the latter. It sucked.

Blue Marble is excellent ice cream. It takes a refined pallette to know good quality from bad. You are from West Virginia, maybe?

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:46 PM

Well to weigh in here

- spending $3 on colored ice is far more environmentally sound than $6 on organic ice cream.
-I personally like Ice better - Sno Cone=greatest invention of man

- and ice is healthier.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:46 PM

4:44 - someone from Texas bought the Duane Reade franchise, btw.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:47 PM

$3? You can get a small ice at Louie G's for $1.50.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:48 PM

4:46 - Louie G's Hummer more than makes up for the "more envionmentally sound" comment...

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:49 PM

Just to add to the confusion, Blue Marble is now a "chain!" They opened up their 2nd location on Underhill Ave in Prospect Heights. Pretty awesome!

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:50 PM

That's $1.50 too much, in my opinion.

I wouldn't support that oaf if it were 5 cents.

He's bad for Brooklyn.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:51 PM

4:46pm not WV but thanks for asking I am a New Yorker so zip it and go back to eating your ice cream...

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:53 PM

Judging by the look of Louis G, he eats more Blue Marble than he does his ice...

And perhaps a few babies too...

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:55 PM

Who, other than depressed single women eat more than 2 scoops of ice cream at one sitting??

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:56 PM

4:53...uhh...new yorker huh? in terms of refined tastes, not much difference from west virginia. sorry...

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:57 PM

I haven't seen Louie G's Hummer in 2years - I think he may have gotten a Prius

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 4:58 PM

i just saw the hummer fairly recently, i think...

i also saw a bentley with a driver waiting on 7th avenue on saturday.

not something you see everyday in park slope...

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 5:09 PM

ummmmm, is this really something people need ot be attacking each other about...ice cream/ices???!!! get a grip people. to each his or her own.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 5:34 PM

I saw Fat Louie sitting in a Cadillac Escalade--the pickup truck thing--last summer at the Union/5th Ave store. Never saw the yellow Hum Job at all. He sometimes sits on the benches by the walk up window. Told him his ices were pretty good (for the sake of small talk) and he kinda just grunted in response.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 6:59 PM

ULG opened on 5th Ave too.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 8:12 PM

I go to ULG's because the stroller moms there aren't as obnoxious as the stroller moms at Blue Marble. Plus owners tend to go to Blue Marble, and as a renter, I don't like to be around them.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 8:23 PM

oooh...i knew there was a reason i like blue marble better.

thanks for helping me figure out, why, 8:23!

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 8:31 PM

Arguing over ice cream for goodness sakes. Get a life people. Those who like and want to spend their hard earned money on Blue Marble should. Those who like and want to spend their hard earned money on Uncle Louis G's should. More and more miserable complaining people are taking over these posts and it is becoming a drag.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 9:28 PM

but a true connoisseur should know that the ice cream at Blue Marble is excellent.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 3:29 PM

SNOB!!!!!!

Ices should be chemicals, can not something remain a delicious mouth staining chemical? Go eat your fancy Blue Marble ice cream. It is Louie G for moi escuse.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 10:22 PM

Wasn't Uncle Louie the subject of a sexual harrasment lawsuit a few years back? I remember going there and seeing all these pretty underage girls, the lawsuit hit, and then bam, next time I went there it was all pimply boys serving the ice cream.

Posted by: Brooklynnative at May 27, 2008 10:31 PM

you are correct about that, 10:31.

buying colored ice from that place is supporting a pretty sick man.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 10:43 PM

I buy my colored ice from the colored guy that hangs out by the ice machine.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 11:55 PM

The What, what do you think?

Posted by: guest at May 28, 2008 12:14 AM

wait, doesn't the yellow hummer belong to vinny (of vinny's ironworks?) i live on bergen bet court and smith, and i often see the yellow hummer parked in one of the ironworks garages near smith.

Posted by: guest at May 28, 2008 2:37 AM

OMG you have got to be kidding. don't like it don't eat it. me. as far as i'm concerned ice cream or ices anywhere are yummy. i'd rather eat ben and jerry's or hagen daz...and that's what i choose to do...people pick your battles better because fighting over ice cream is just wrong.

Posted by: guest at May 28, 2008 8:40 AM

4:44: "Water Ice"? What, are you from Philadelphia?

Posted by: guest at May 28, 2008 9:54 AM

4:29 - I completely agree about the people who work at Blue Marble. I've given them 2 chances and I will never go back. I don't need anyone to give me 'tudes whether I pay $6 per scoop or $1.50. It's called Customer Service!!!

Posted by: guest at May 28, 2008 1:58 PM

Uncle Louie G's are to delicious frozen desserts as poop is to brownies. I think you get the idea. I'd rather drink hot tea and gravy on a summer day, than Louie's.

Why so much hate for Blue Marble? If you can get past the great wall of strollers and toddlers at the door, it's totally worth the wait (and apparently the expense???)

Cute. Fighting about ice cream...

Posted by: guest at May 29, 2008 10:19 PM

I happen to love uncle louie ice/ ice cream I don't understand what every one is so mad about.

Posted by: guest at May 30, 2008 10:50 AM

I have to say, I miss the Uncle Louis G's on Henry street, because I live around the corner, and now I am relegated to going to the Baskin-Robbins on Court, which is an utter cesspool. It's like walking into the Twilight Zone: the staff is stoned and there is piss on the floors. Plus they destroyed the lovely Leonardo's Pizza to put the damn thing up. The only plus is that Leonardo Senior planted grape vines, and they're still there, in the outdoor area.

Posted by: guest at June 8, 2008 10:01 PM

the guy with the yellow hummer owns the one on union street and 5th ave. he doesnt own the one on smith street. the guys on smith street are very nice and are always making the customers laugh.
