I had never noticed until someone pointed it out here that the NYT's real estate articles are written by brokerages and now see how true that is. What a piece of marketing for new construction- and I live in new construction myself.

The New York real estate market really is an animal unto itself. So much efforts goes into maintaining and creating illusions. My favorite line of broker babble was from the Corcoran broker "their eyes have been trained differently" when referring to the buyers who compare prewars to new condos. Ha!

What's a reasonable rental broker fee?

Last time I was in the market (late 90's) it was one month's rent or up to 10% annual rent. I was recently quoted 15% annual rent which I think is outrageous.

Is there a topic in the forum or can someone supply a consise response?

in brooklyn no-one actually pays 15%, its one-month. If a broker tells you otherwise he's just trying it on.

yes, some of the NYT articles are tainted. there is some truth to the article. just had a friend who was completely sold on pre-war, buy a condo because once she saw all the condos with A/C, terraces, washer/dryers, etc... well, she wanted it.

I totally agree that NY Times article was such an amazing heap of rubbish! I’m shocked! First of all $450/ft for those nasty ass ikea developer kitchens? Are they kidding? Those 8x8 island kitchens are $10,000 tops soup to nuts.
There’s no way that’s an accurate assessment of buyers tastes… it seems so the opposite… like people are sick to death of new development like-alike stuff??
