Garden of the Day: HGTV Does Greenwood Heights

Some people have all the luck. When this Greenwood Heights resident moved into her two-family house back in 2005, the back yard consisted of "a mess of concrete and brick featuring a giant dog house and what was advertised as a koi pond (essentially a hole in the ground, lined and filled with water and some goldfish)." After having some workers break up the concrete, she was starting from scratch. After getting one estimate of $35,000 to create the garden she wanted, she had to get more creative. This included applying to be the subject of a HGTV show called Urban Outsiders. After a five-month selection process, she got the thumbs-up. She had to pony up the $7,000 for materials but HGTV provided the labor and know-how. The result? Well, a picture's worth a thousand words.

Nice looking, but I wonder how often they really sit on that couch.

Wonderful garden. I love it. I don't know if it's better than yesterday's garden, but it's certainly in a much better part of Brooklyn.

10:37 - sour grapes? Come on. It looks fantastic.

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 10:39 AM

I like the stone wall at the back of the garden. It looks rustic and genuine.

Posted by: Hal at May 8, 2008 10:58 AM

NICE!!! Looks great. Wonder how the owner likes it.

I would like more seating though.

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 11:01 AM

Good for her! I'd be out there daily. Damn—I'd make that my office. All I need is a wireless router and an umbrella and I am all set!

Posted by: Fjorder at May 8, 2008 11:02 AM

I thought I saw all episodes of that show, but I don't remember this one. There was one done in n. slope. The host is adorable, but he has the most annoying laugh. He also has a bad habit of cementing in all the stone he lays.

Don't see why they wouldn't use that couch all the time. That comment makes no sense.

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 11:11 AM

Agree more seating would be nice, more furniture actually - a little table, etc. But come on, guys, they were making her a garden, not furnishing it! She can always add what she wants for furnishings later...

Is there a reason everyone puts their deck stairs jutting out into their garden this way? I've always thought I would try to run it under the deck through a cut out and across the width of the building (fire escape style). That way it wouldn't interfere with your garden. Maybe that's just cause I lust after having my own dirt so I wouldn't want to sacrifice any. Maybe once you have it you don't feel that way.

Anyone know if there is something in the DOB deck regulations that leads people to arrange things this way?

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 11:15 AM

Hey owner, did you get to decide on the design at all or did they just tell you how it was going to be?

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 11:22 AM

11:15...I had a deck built and there was a slab from the house out 12' below it...and then another 30' of garden. The deck was built to code extending 8' from the house and the stairs went down off the back for about 4' to a landing and then a right angle turn so that none of the plantable garden area was used. I'll be sending this whole deck and yard landscaping to be posted in about a week after the rhodedendrons and hygrangeas are in bloom.

Thanks Dave, I'd like to see those pics.

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 11:36 AM

10:37 is RIGHT - it is a beautiful looking garden but I don't believe that the setup is all that 'user friendly' - it looks more like a set than place that is inviting to hang out -

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 11:38 AM

BROWNSTONER - can you please include photos of the decks in this outdoors series - that is kind of the crux of the matter ne c'est pas?

But GORGEOUS GARDEN!!

Hi owner here ...
In answer to some of your questions:
I love the garden, most of the plants have survived and is in season 2 of regrowing now.
They provided the couch but as some of you noted, I needed and got more seating. The deck comfortably seats 7-8 people.
As for why the deck was built this way ... that was before my time but the house is only 12' wide and the bathroom extension is about 6 feet wide. it would be awkward if not impossible to build the deck parallel to the house.
And for the design, I definitely got input, but because I am no plant expert I was pretty flexible with what I wanted, which was basically a lush space and a place to sit where the chairs wouldn't sink into the ground. I also had say in the materials they used as I wanted stone as well as a wooden deck.
I'm really pleased with the way everything turned out. Thanks for your comments.

It's "n'est-ce pas". But anyway, gorgeous garden indeed.

What do people think of the original $35K estimate for the work. We'd like to do our garden which is starting from the same orignal condition as the Greenwood. Our garden is pretty big (32.5 ft by 50 ft) and is a total eyesore.

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 12:25 PM

Too high. I paid $17k to Chuck at Dig and got 30' of 8' high cedar fence, stone walkway, trellissed area, raised vegetable bed (all cedar), moved a large apple tree, and a ton of plants plus...the front yard...cutout the concrete 5' X 5' and put in a 7' tall holly plus planted the bed around the tree at the curb....and about 3 yards of mulch to cover it all

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 8, 2008 12:47 PM

Who is "Chuck at Dig?" How can I contact him/her?

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 1:05 PM

Well you could have googled dig and found it faster but I'll do the work for you....

i'll leave the website search up to you just to make it fun!!!!

"Well you could have googled dig and found it faster but I'll do the work for you...."

Yeah, I could have, but I'm at work and just surfing this blog when taking a break from doing my actual job. It was much easier to ask you to do it, and you did. Good boy! Thanks.

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 1:15 PM

I'm at work too....5 man hedge fund shop...we can even surf porn on our computers if we want to...no HR department!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 8, 2008 1:24 PM

Hey Dave, 1:15 here. You guys have it pretty good! I'm a manager at a PR outfit and although I could surf porn if I really wanted to, however we have a few (very nice) young ladies working here and I have to be careful to avoid any apearance of impropriety. But that's OK. I get plenty at home.

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 1:32 PM

1:32 Not going to get into a pissing contest as to who gets more at home. Did you find his website? Now get back to work.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 8, 2008 1:39 PM

Hey Owner -
This looks great, my yard is so similar witrh a large tree exactly where yours is. Are you concerned about the roots messing things up in a few years?
Is the deck removable?

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 1:50 PM

Only on Brownstoner could a pleasant discussion on gardens turn into an argument over who can view more porn at work and who gets more action at home. No wonder I love this blog!

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 8, 2008 1:54 PM

"1:32 Not going to get into a pissing contest as to who gets more at home. Did you find his website? Now get back to work."

Who's pissing? YOU mentioned porn, I mentioned home. Why do you have a problem with that? I didn't look AT or FOR his site. I simply called the number you gave me and spoke with a human. Finally, when I start working for you (as in never), I'll let you tell me when to work. Thanks again for the info.

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 1:55 PM

Fun to rile people up here...its soooo easy!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 8, 2008 2:10 PM

When i did my deck the design originally had the steps going to the side, but the rise of the steps would have been too steep to work out.

Posted by: tomgee at May 8, 2008 2:33 PM

hey Dave, you lookin' for any new associates? What strategy do you guys have? hopefully not fixed income! :-)

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 2:35 PM

Equities only...long and long/short...I do Asia...Japan is the only major market up in USD terms Y-T-D. And no, I don't have a Japanese garden!!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 8, 2008 2:41 PM

Dave Does Asia. Kind of ties together the themes of porn and occupations being discussed here.

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 8, 2008 5:16 PM

Hey!!!

Watch it.

besides I asked you earlier if you wanted to get a drink somewhere??

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 8, 2008 5:21 PM

Were you asking me? I thought you were talking to one of the annoying faded type posters!

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 8, 2008 5:23 PM

why would i talk to any of those a$$hats??

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 8, 2008 5:24 PM

name the spot

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at May 8, 2008 5:26 PM

I would, excpet you seem to know absolutely nothing about the stock market or real estate. KIDDING, my friend. I like to kibbitz, that's what I do. Cannot make it tonight, but we should try to do it another time. Maybe ambush Jerri at the Excelsior one night, if he ever shows up here again!

Posted by: Biff Champion at May 8, 2008 5:35 PM

The "faded type" ***hats seemed to be discussing the topic at hand and avoiding the use of foul language, while the logged in posters seemed to be discussing something completely off topic and cannot express themselves without resorting to four letter words

Posted by: guest at May 8, 2008 7:30 PM

Actually 7:30, after 1:40, there were no faded type posts relating to the topic, INCLUDING YOURS. So there, take that, faded type Asshat!
