Development Watch: 373 Wythe Avenue

Biking over the Williamsburg Bridge last week we were struck by the birds-eye view of 373 Wythe Avenue, a one-story commercial building currently in the process of being dismantled. A little digging turned up this rendering for a 13-story, Karl Fischer-designed residential building on the site. Turns out that the New Building permit was granted just a week ago. Evidently, Williamsburg residents don't feel the same level of protection towards their bridge as those who live in the shadows of the Brooklyn Bridge do about theirs! GMAP P*Shark DOB

my husband and i have lived across the street from this building for five years....it used to be a meat distribution wearhouse. Favorite memory: man in semi asks "can you move your uhaul - i have to deliver my clams". Least favorite memory: the sound of semi's idling in front of the house at all hours. Now we get to listen to the ambient sound of construction. This new building will truly TRANSFORM the block which currently, by my count, is only occupied by about...mmmm...20 people.

The highway style ramps leading up the bridge span would be better off obscured.

I wish someone would develop the Budget Rental lot on the corner of Hall and Park already.

That is some nice design in the rendering.

Ya I still don't get the full glass wall on a public face of a residence, and the haphazard sheets the occupants throw up trying to gain some privacy.

a co-worker and i walk home over the bridge about 2x per week, and every time she asks me if i know what's going to happen on that lot (which i didn't), so thank you!

Should be an interesting experiment -- I've always wondered whether trees can grow over there. As for the rendering, typical blech from KF. Does this guy *ever* do anything different? I'd hate to be a junior architect at his firm.
