Closing Bell: Where's the Beef on Court?

tjsboarshead-05-2008.jpg
Racked has been diligently documenting the action—or lack thereof—in the future Trader Joe's space on Atlantic and Court. A worker says the store is “at least a couple months” from opening, and as the pic above shows, the grocery does not seem to be making big strides, construction-wise. A few blocks north on the corner of State, the space that's supposed to become a Boar's Head superstore is marked by a similar glacial pace of progress. Where are the cold cuts and fancy tortilla chips we've been promised, goddammit?

how very true to the "preservation of brownstone brooklyn" you are, brownstoner, aching for corporate stores to feed your fancy while knocking out the mom-and-pops that once defined the borough...

first of all a trader joes would be great for the area and a boarshead superstore wouldnt be bad either...

I have noticed that Trader Joe's has had some help wanted ads on Craig's List recently that mention the new location on Atlantic. So if they are interviewing now, I would think that the pace will pick up.

Trader Joes! TRAAADDEERRRR JOOOOOOOOEEESSSSS!

Posted by: guest at May 28, 2008 4:54 PM

It is funny that many of the same people that rail against chain stores L-U-V Trader Joes despite its being a national chain.
Really, people just want to be able to pick the tenants they want.
Lets at least be consistent in our righteousness.

What in the name of all that's holy is a BOAR'S HEAD SUPERSTORE?!?!

Posted by: Brouhaha at May 28, 2008 5:53 PM

I said it before:

The only thing that will be longer then the check out lines at TJs is the wait for the place to actually open in Brooklyn.

what is a boarshead superstore????

sandwhiches how much can u do with cold cuts

Posted by: guest at May 28, 2008 5:58 PM

Corporate chains are at least somewhat in the position to offer health insurance, unlike the mom and pops. I'm not saying they all do, but in any discussion about them, it's worth bringing up.

"how much can u do with cold cuts"

such a cute kid. just stay the way you are. adorable.

Why would anyone be excited about a Boar's Head Superstore? Wow, that stuff is mediocre.

Trader Joes = prepackaged junk food from China

Anybody who hates big corporate chains should LOVE Trader Joe's coming to Brooklyn.

Not that any of the NIMBY's know a darned thing about business at all. Nor how to put anything in context. Nor do they understand how some new development actually helps their purported liberal causes.

Trader Joe's makes more money per-square-foot than Wal Mart and thus seen as a model for the kinds of stores that can take on and beat the big-box big-chain stores like Wal Mart, as consumers become unhappy with Wal Mart's practices. Here is an anti-chain-store stocks blogger who loves Trader Joe's:

Lastly, how is it socially irresponsible to help people save money?? Cuz it's not. SAVING MONEY GOOD. The only explanation for the opposition to Trader Joe's is these posts are from competing overpriced gourmet food stores in Park Slope.

I have to give big ups to the wine selection at TJ's. I always find several wines of quality and and value on 14th Street. Decent beers too. You could be getting alot worse than TJ's. On the other hand, a Boar's Head "superstore", wtf!?

Posted by: guest at May 29, 2008 9:13 AM

the construction crew working on the boar's head store appears to the same guys who worked on the actually building when it went up. i live next door so i was witness to the unbelievably slow pace at which this contractor worked on putting up the building. they appear to be a chinatown outfit and they are either extremely detail oriented perfectionist artisans or incompetent. look for the store to be up by dec ... seriously. as for trader joe's ... BRING IT ON. and you moron's who are hating on TJ's, please don't shop there, seriously, please don't.

There will not be a wine store in Brookly....you will have to go to Union Sq.

Workers were actively busy this morning (Thursday) at the Boar's Head store. The front doors were open and the crew was cutting what appeared to be sheetrock. There was also some metal studs up, but not very many.

"The only explanation for the opposition to Trader Joe's is these posts are from competing overpriced gourmet food stores in Park Slope."

Hardly. Trader Joe's sells pre-packaged foods that may be good for your wallet, but not for your health. I manage to shop on the cheap by purchasing fruits and vegetables from the farmers markets and buying basic staples (dairy, bread, flour, pasta) from the local grocery stores. It's moronic (to borrow a term from another poster) to assume that someone who has a different opinion must have self-serving reasons for possessing that opinion. Why can't adults actually take the time to formulate arguments and have a healthy debate. Enough with the ad hominem responses. Grow up!

"It's moronic (to borrow a term from another poster) to assume that someone who has a different opinion must have self-serving reasons for possessing that opinion."

Um well, it DOES happen here though. And like all the time.

Anyone who says "grow up" and gets so nasty in response to a perfectly reasonable assumption that was based on reading this blog for years now, really needs to grow up himself.

After speaking with an adjacent local merchant, it seems as if the small empty stores just to the south of the Trader Joe's spot (i.e.: UPS store + one other) will be part of TJs. Perhaps that's where the wine store will go (even though a previous poster said that won't happen) or another specialty section. Work has been ongoing in those spaces for the last few weeks.
