Closing Bell: Flea and House Tour Pray for Sun

We'd be lying if we said we weren't just a little bit irked at Mother Nature right now. While precious few rain drops have actually fallen on the Brooklyn Flea during market hours, all four Sundays to date have had the threat of rain and have been unseasonably cold. And it looks like more of the same for this weekend. Argghh! Luckily we have a hearty bunch of vendors who roll with the rain-or-shine punches to get to what's real. The organizers of this year's Fort Greene House Tour must also be watching the weather report closely. Both events happen Sunday. The Flea runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 176 Lafayette Avenue. Closest trains are the C and G to Washington/Clinton. Or you can take any of the number of trains that go to Atlantic Station and make the 10-minute stroll up Lafayette Avenue from there. The house tour is from noon to 5 p.m.; you can pick up your tickets in the BAM Garden at Fulton and Lafayette or at the flea market. If you're in the neighborhood on Saturday, make sure to stop by the Habana Outpost Block Party.
UPDATE: The sun has decided to shine upon The Flea for the first time and the place is hopping. Come on down! It's open 'til 5 o'clock.

Unfortunately the forecast calls for rain but where there is prayer there is faith and hope.

In addition to the Flea and the house tour check out Landmark Estates at 122 Ft. Greene Place between Lafayette and Hanson Place from 2-4 PM. I am the developer and we are thrilled to share this condo conversion with four units from 1350-1900 square feet in a landmarked building. Check out pictures at brooklynproperties.com. (It's the featured property on the home page)
If you are going to the flea and/or walking the house tour it should be a fun event to add to your schedule. Hopefully, the rain will stay away. Have a great weekend.

*Is* there another flea market on Sunday? I had the sense that last week's may have been the last one because it was so deserted.
Posted by: guest at May 3, 2008 6:45 AM
The weather in NYC is pathetic. Amazing that so many of you put up with it. The emperor has no clothes, people!
Posted by: guest at May 3, 2008 9:58 AM
20,000 visitors is not deserted, 6:45.
you are a total moron.
and you posted the exact same comment last week.
Posted by: guest at May 3, 2008 10:15 AM
i find it way more pathetic that you read and post on this blog, 9:58 and clearly don't even live in new york.
i love the weather here. rain and clouds are sometimes nice. nourishes plants naturally unlike other parts of the country where you pretend you love the climate, yet have the sprinklers set to go on 5 times a day. so wasteful.
people who need 80 and sunshine all the time are the same people who live inside a bubble and think the world is nothing but rainbows and sugarplums.
you don't like the weather here?
good. you don't need to. you don't live here.
the other 8.25 million of us are alright with it. some value culture, diversity and world class dining over constant sunshine.
Posted by: guest at May 3, 2008 11:41 AM
hey 11:41--wouldnt you like to think the world is rainbows and sugarplums?? Or are you happy in your filthy, bleak, morose, decaying NYC surroundings crying from another bout of depression and hoping your ultraviolet lamp cures your SAD?

I was at the flea last Sunday and it was like a ghost town. 10:15 must be smoking old tire inner tubes.

i was at the flea two weeks ago and it was packed.
and i've been off the inner tubes for years.
Posted by: guest at May 3, 2008 8:21 PM
I thought it was packed during its first weekend, but it does seem like it getting smaller over time.
I'm just sayin'...

Posted by: guest at May 4, 2008 12:05 PM
Of course its smaller over time, but a ghost town? Tell that to the wad of cash i made last week.
Posted by: guest at May 4, 2008 12:15 PM
Just got back and the flea is INSANELY PACKED!!!!!!!
congrats Mr. B!

1:18.
Yours is the biggest lie on here.
I can't understand how someone can be SO bitter and jealous (and a little hateful) about someone else's success that you'd come onto this blog and think that you would have ANY pull in swaying other peoples emotions (with lies, no less) about the Flea (99% of which LOVE the new event!).
You are one sick person, I have to say. Suggesting throughout this thread that last week was the last Flea? You are either grossly absurd, or need to seek a professional, since you know full well the flea has been ridiculously successful (given the weather has SUCKED).
You are the kinda sick that should be put away.

wow. whoever keeps posting it's empty is probably an armchair warrior who hasn't been. is it slightly less crowded than opening day? yes, and as many vendors told me, that day only a few people bought and now people who come, really buy. has there been dismal weather? yes, and today it's bright and shining and packed again. I agree with the commenter above about how sad it is to see someone actually wanting to destroy something that brings so much to the community. I think people who are going to do that should have at least a personal code that they will log in with a username, so that people can call them out on lies. I've had a great time at the flea and found at least one thing every weekend and I hear from the organizers that they're only getting better and better vendors wanting to participate. I've aso really enjoyed bumping into friends from all over brooklyn and manhattan and neighbors that I didn't know as well and now do. I'm happy for the organizers and happy for us - they're sticking through these early weeks with bad weather, the least we can do is stick with them through the growing pains.

Seems pretty pathetic to me thatthe number of people attending this flea is being discussed every week. Whether there are 10 or 10,000 people, it is 10 or 10,000 more people that the vendors have a chance of selling their wares to and buyers have a chance of getting something they like and need.No different then a store being open and customers sauntering in to look or buy. This flea brings excitement to the neighborhood and is good for the various other businesses, especially the restaurants that are seemingly benefiting from the influx of people.

Ok, I REALLY did just get back from the Flea, and it was quite bustling, to say the least. I bought 3 things...a little desk lamp, a canvas tote and a Christian Dior shirt. Good day. The one couple near to the front gate had SO MUCH great stuff...old bowling bags, vintage kitchenware, a couple of old vornado fans...some really nice stuff. She was selling quite briskly. I saw about 5 other purchases happening while I was in the process of mine.
The food vendors looked swamped. I wanted a snack, but the line was too long for me. I was too into shopping today. The other 2 times I had come, I came with friends and while it was awesome, I am really a better shopped when I'm alone. I had some great Iron and Wine on my Ipod to keep me company.
I wandered around the neighborhood after and there were people everywhere. I know the Ft. Greene open house tour was today also, but wow...what a great day to be walking around.
As a Park Sloper, I think it's great to have this in Brownstone Brooklyn. I had a great walk back, winding back through 5th Avenue and then up Union to Prospect Park and then back to 7th and then to my house, and realized what an incredible thing it is to be able to wander all around these neighborhoods (walked UP Vanderbilt on my way there and noticed how nice that street is looking, especially with the new paving, bike lanes and great looking shops and bars) and just took it all in.
What a gorgeous, interconnected collection of thriving neighborhoods, each unique and filled with energy and beauty. I saw every color of the rainbow today...in the items at the Flea, in the flowers and trees and in the people.
It's cliche, but it's true.
I feel really lucky to live in Brooklyn right now.

hear, hear 3:51, I felt the same way too!
Posted by: miss priss at May 4, 2008 5:15 PM
I agree with post 3:51 too. I had a good time at the flea today. I bought some great stuff. The vendors are all nice and there is something for everyone.

Yup, Flea was a bustling scene. Picked up some sweet vinyl, a vintage (1972) nautical map and could've spent much more $. A great addition to Brownstone Brooklyn, lots of smiling faces. We'll go back often.
