'The Real World' Opting for Downtown Brooklyn?

belltel-052708.jpg
Those rumormongers over at the Times are perpetuating the (unconfirmed) gossip that the cast of "Real World: Brooklyn" will live in Downtown's Belltel Lofts. The article has some excellent man-on-the-street quotes from people who live, work, or play near the building. “It’s less safe, I feel,” says 19-year-old Bruce Wallace. “They could get mugged out here.” Wallace notes that the cast's entertainment options in the area might be limited to stuff like catching a movie or going to Junior's. (We think this is pretty short-sighted: After all, the Real Worlders would only be about eight blocks from the newish IHOP, and perhaps they'll get to shop at the new H&M.) An employee of nearby Petland Discounts, meanwhile, has this to say: "Compared to other places they were living, I think this would be a downgrade. A few bars, a few stores, that’s about it. Clubs, they have to go to Manhattan. It’s kind of rough out here. They’ve just got to keep their eyes open and ears open.” And a man who works at a religious goods store in the area thinks “They’d be jeopardizing their safety. Too many side streets.” At least one person sees only good from MTV setting up shop at BellTel: Ronn Torossian, a spokesman for the Bridge Street condo. “We think this building will continue to gentrify Brooklyn, and certainly having MTV there will only accelerate that," says Torossian. "We expect that it will increase property values.” StreetEasy shows 17 active listings in the former telephone company building ranging from $517,000 to $1,899,000.

This is Great for Brooklyn. Go Real World go.

Since they go everywhere with a camera crew, it would pretty dumb to mug them, since it would be all be caught on tape. (Although usually it's a member of the Real World cast that ends up getting arrested at some point.) PS: In Paris, they stayed out in some boring suburb and has to travel into the city to party.

My God, is this dumb show still on? I would tune in only if these brats got middle of the night prank phone calls from The What;)

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 9:47 AM

It'll be funny when an entire camera crew gets mugged

The culture of this show is that of a out of control spring break party. Hard to see it working in Downtown Brooklyn.

Perhaps with a recession looming they want to bring the show back to its roots which were a little more "real" and less about partying in the hot tub. I doubt it.

Kind of funny that the first Real World loft was in Soho (1992). Very gritty and real!

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 10:15 AM

Wow, you are so creative.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 10:27 AM

Doesnt 10:14 realize no one is going to read that diarrhea? Once again the scroll button conquers manic depressive outbursts!

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 10:35 AM

What a ridiculous article. I live at Belltel and I don't believe that they interviewed anyone who lived. My favorite quote is from the moron at the barbershop.
"Jack Paz, 27, owner of Jack’s Barber Shop, where a cut costs $12, said he did not have time to watch the show. “My wife’s into it,” he said. “She has nothing else to do in her life than sit home and watch TV. Her husband’s working.”

His wife is going to kick his ass when he gets home.

Anyway, I can understand why most of the people who have businesses here are talking down there own neighborhood. They don't want the rent to go up. The have a vested interest in keeping it grimy. Maybe Michael Wilson will venture into Belltel next time and talk to some people who actually live here.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 10:47 AM

There should be a maximun amount of characters allowed in a post. Who has time to read that crap?

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 10:50 AM

i walk around downtown at night and have had little problem

didnt they film in Denver a few years ago. That place is a shithole.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 10:56 AM

@10:47

You live at Belltel and the statement made by the Barber shop owner hit a little too close to home?

I bet you're one of those whinny, always complaining unemployeed moms ruining the reputation of your building. I wonder how your husband feels, knowing his wife is ruining the resale value of his home.

Yeah, I looked at units to buy their but decided that you gossipy nags are not worth it. Go back to the UES, UWS, or whatever if you insist on acting like an entitled a$$hat.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 10:58 AM

10:58 just wrote the book on how to act like an entitled asshat.

bravo

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 11:11 AM

@11:11

Unoriginal and just copying what I said, you need to get a job you worthless nag. Let me guess, you spend all day "blogging" and complaining on the unofficial & unwanted belltel lofts building blog.

Go hurry up and post a link back here saying how someone has the nerve to think you're an a$$hat. Complain about how nobody opens the front door for you even though you DON'T live in a doorman building. Complain about how you don't have access to the front of the building even though you don't own it. Complain about construction noise in a building that is being CONSTRUCTED. Move to the burbs you, you will be much happier and will be your neighbors.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 11:23 AM

I love it! The belltel stroller nazis are at it again!

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 11:29 AM

im 10:58 but not 10:47

I just think you sound like an idiot. but i dont live downtown and im at work

woot

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 11:53 AM

Gothamist claims that they're going to live on 3rd Street b/w Court and Smith - which is the real location?

I hope it's not Carroll Gardens...my lovely neighborhood will really go down the tubes if that happens... :(

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 11:56 AM

OH NOES 7 MORE PEOPLE IN THE NABE!!!

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 12:11 PM

BelTel is only about 35% sold so there are a lot of spaces there. Anyone who thinks it it is a dangerous neighborhood knows nothing. And it is a 15 min. walk at most to Smith Street.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 12:22 PM

12:22 agree 100% this will be fun. But i can't beleive the real world is still on TV. Why is MTV still on TV.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 1:02 PM

"His wife is going to kick his ass when he gets home."

If all she does is watch TV all day, then she won't read the article and will never know the difference.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 1:15 PM

Being mugged? The precinct is very safe. There a lot of people in the nabe. I went to the IHOP last week...the food was not very good(I make better myself) but never felt unsafe-it was a fast cheap lunch. some people wouldn't mine being in hell hole if it was in Manhattan but this block is far from gritty....except that it is Brooklyn.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 1:15 PM

this is a silly rumor.

Posted by: BrooklynLove at May 27, 2008 1:23 PM

they should do it. it will so much more real, especially the depiction of travel time to get to manhattan.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 1:23 PM

There is a Dallas BBQ restaurant on Livingston Street.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 1:31 PM

10:47 Next time there happens to be an article or post about belltel lofts, do the other residents of the building a favor by zipping your lips!

Nobody cares about stay-at-homes and the few b&*ches are ruining it for all the other parents in the building who are pretty cool.

So, take your double wide, SUV stroller out of here!

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 1:46 PM

I've been living at University Towers on the other side of Willoughby Street (across Flatbush)for 10 years and the idea that this area is unsafe is laughable. I walk along this block over to the 4/5 at Borough Hall twice a day (to and from work) everyday and there's noting "unsafe" about it. Who exactly are these people that the author was talking to? Is it the nicest block in the world? Hardly, but it's plenty safe. Hey, maybe MTV should pay FUREE to protect the Real Worlders!

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 2:39 PM

i think this is bad for brooklyn. i'm bummed. brownstone brooklyn would have offered charm and williamsburg would have offered interesting shopping and nightlife. this is blah...

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 2:45 PM

maybe if mtv is planning for a real world season 10 years from now. this immediate area is currently almost predominantly a constrution zone or vacated shops awaiting the wrecking ball. it would make no sense for mtv to put this group of shmos at belltel.

Posted by: BrooklynLove at May 27, 2008 8:31 PM

my neighbor in park slope is also in "talks" with mtv for this.

i think they are "talking" to a lot of people in a lot of neighborhoods.

i'm sure we'll all be surprised and piss ourselves when they tell us where it really is...

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 9:06 PM

8:31pm The premise of the show is about a season 1 real world cast member all grown up and now running for a Brooklyn public office. I don't remember which post he is going for but the need to be close to Borough Hall is a factor.

So, actually, being in Downtown Brooklyn does make sense.

Posted by: guest at May 27, 2008 9:14 PM

9:14 - how much time do you spend in the immediate vicinity of belltel? the notion that mtv would put real world brooklyn there is rediculous.

Posted by: BrooklynLove at May 28, 2008 7:31 AM

9:14am One of the main reasons for Belltel being an option for the Real World is that the penthouse unit is a duplex taking up floors 26 & 27 & has a private elevator. It is about 2,800 square feet with a private terrace, 3 large legal bedroom (can easily fit multiple beds in each room), 2 full bathrooms, 2 half bathrooms (sink, toilet). Has excellent views either of the city or of Brooklyn. They can make as much noise as they want up there. Nobody else is living up there. The ceilings are high - around 14 feet. The living room is huge. Plenty of room for camera crew and house guests. And, did I mention they can make as much noise as they want up there - no one will hear them... well maybe if they make a lot of noise on the terrace. There aren't that many places in Brooklyn that can offer those things.

Contrary to what a lot of the residents think, 95% of the residents won't know they are there, except for the unemployed moms who don't want to be caught on TV looking like a 45 year old with a 2 year old baby.

Ignore the haters. We welcome them (Downtown Brooklyn that is).

Posted by: guest at May 28, 2008 10:09 AM

& no, I don't live there. I have a friend that lives there. And, yes, the reason I know about the unit is because I saw the floorplan from my friends offering plan for his unit which has floorplans for all the units in the building.

i love downtown brooklyn, but if you think that mtv would but real world in belltel then you're irrational.

Posted by: BrooklynLove at May 28, 2008 1:05 PM

Everything is all good at DoBro...if you are arguing that stroller moms who are from the UWS are ruining the neighborhood, then obviously you are showing how much the neighborhood has changed and how inaccurate the article is.
