420 Classon Avenue: Waiting for the Lottery Results

The castle-like trio of buildings that was saved from imminent peril and combined in a heroic conversion by the Pratt Area Community Council is almost ready for occupancy. As the photo shows, the building is good to go. PACC received over 700 applications for the 12 affordable condominiums in the building. The lottery has been held and the non-profit is currently checking applicants' credit records and confirming their eligibility. No word on exactly when the winning envelopes will go in the mail.

Wow, what an amazing job of bringing buildings back from the dead. I'm not even going to quibble about a couple of shortcuts taken here. Contrast the before pix from the earliest B'stoner links to this. Goes to show what can be done to restore buildings that looked like they were held up by only force of habit.
Hello - Navy Yard, some of the Admiral's Row houses are in better shape now, than these were. Take notes, please, and I'm sure PACC did the job on a very tight budget. It can be done.
This is what urban revitalization should be - bringing back to life almost an entire block, putting 3 buildings back on the tax roles, providing housing, and bringing back neighborhoods.
Kudos to PACC.

If they are checking credit reports and other criteria, applicants would have to provide additional info. Therefore some lucky people out there already know if they won the first step in the lottery.

Booooo. I didn't win this one either. :( Oh well, back to the housing-lottery-application board for me.

nosleeptil... you are mistaken.

So glad these weren't knocked down and replaced with a people warehouse box thing.

11:14 How am I mistaken? How would PACC verify income without tax forms which were not required with the application?
Posted by: nosleeptil at May 6, 2008 11:52 AM
The verification process begins after the winners are selected. Both my mother and aunt won housing lotteries, and
trust me the verification proccess is rigerous and detailed. If the recipient does not qualify another name is selected, and put through the process.

kdabrowski, that's my point.
Mr. B posted that lucky envelopes would be in the mail soon and I posted that the lucky people must already know because they have to provide documentation for the verification.

wow! i don't live nearby anymore, but i used ot walk by the unrenovated version, and it is really great to see it all fixed up now! this should be the baseline for the city, let's keep fixing up dilapidated buildings like this! also they should build an identical structure to the right (what are they doing with that lot?)

now the next trick is maintenance.
There are many HDFC coops in my neighborhood in beautiful buildings. Unfortunately many of them don't have the budget to make repairs, clean graffiti, replace the bulbs at the entrance doors, or even clean up the trash in front of the place.

Bravo PACC!

This is the first one of these that I applied for. Where can I find more middle-income housing lotteries to enter if I'm not lucky enough to get in on this one?
Posted by: guest at May 6, 2008 2:56 PM
2:56, lotteries that receive city funding are posted at nyc.gov in the HPD section of the site.
You can even subscribe to an email, but it's spotty and better to check for lotteries weekly.

you don't win steps in a housing lottery. you either win the opportunity to purchase or you don't; however, you must be eligible, you must qualify. noone has won this particular housing lottery yet, but the opportunity to "throw your name in the hat" has expired.
