Wednesday Food & Drink Round-Up

Angry Wade's Gets a Makeover
224 Smith Street (at Butler Street); (718) 488-7253
Haven't been inside in a while, but doesn't this place look better in red?

Five Guys Burgers in Park Slope: Hot or Not?
Says one Chowhound: "I was walking past the corner of 7th Ave and 6th street (where that ugly Bank of America is going in) and I saw a work permit on the space next door (the old D'Agostino's) that says a Five Guys is going in. Yea!"
But another replies: "Or is it another nail in the coffin for the charm of Park Slope?"

Opening and Closing Report
According to Eater, Jesse's Brooklyn Kitchen will be closing shop on Smith Street, and Manhattan's Cheyenne Diner will reopen in Red Hook, but Red Hook's 360 is officially gone for good.

After the jump: Luz turns out the lights for Earth Day (and today), bargains at Barrio, and Andrea Strong's move to Brooklyn...

Luz, Sin Luz
177 Vanderbilt Avenue, Fort Greene
"On April 22 and 23 we will be selecting, measuring and combining organic and sustainable products to produce a meal without electric power. We will be using all natural, organic and grass fed products from local farms and markets. We will also be serving organic beer and wine. There will be no electricity, no telephones, no gas, no credit card machines, no computers, and no heat lamps." [Green Brooklyn]

Barrio's Opening Bargain
210 Seventh Avenue (at Third Street), Park Slope; (718) 965-4000
"Spencer Rothschild opened this Mexican place in his own neighborhood on Monday. There will be a 15 percent discount through April 30." [NY Times]

Andrea Strong Moves to Brooklyn, Reviews the Grocery, Admires the Locals
288 Smith Street, Carroll Gardens; (718) 596-3335
"While three appetizers were a lot, we couldn’t resist a grilled calamari, so we didn’t. We shared it as a mid-course. Thin, wonderfully chewy and charred ringlets are tossed with sweet and hot long peppers, roasted and pickled cauliflower, and giant cannellini beans (so lustrous they almost looked like little poached eggs) from Rancho Gordo in a dill and tarragon dressing... The room was now filled, and Diana was looking around, smiling. 'Brooklyn people are so cute,' she said, sweeping a piece of soft crusty bread through the last of the dill dressing." [The Strong Buzz]

How is the "charm of Park Slope" even remotly effected by the opening of (overrated) 5 guys Burgers?

Thanks for including the link to GBK's story about Luz. I went last night and it was not only incredible food, but a really -um- electric vibe in the place. :) Go tonight, you'll love it (just think ahead about how to get home, best to avoid walking through the projects).

Here is the information Andrea Strong left out of her review.... Yes she lived in Brooklyn 17 years ago but Carroll Gardens was actually full of Law students back then and
Andrea Strong may be the single most annoying person I even came in contact with in the law profession(and thats saying something).

I love how now she tries to play herself off as some laid back foodie who was just too bohemian to deal with being a lawyer - She was the poster child for cutthroat, front-row sitting, perpetual hand raising, annoying ass-kissing, hide the books in the library (they grade on a curve) striver that everyone goofs on.

I wish she had stayed in Manhattan.....

no need to go inside angry wades. worst bar in the area (after so much promise when it first opened). good if you're a gangster though.

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 12:08 PM

I agree. I've never had a good experience in Angry Wade's. And with so many other options in the area why would anyone bother?

Posted by: wildman28 at April 23, 2008 12:14 PM

angry wades is filled with green bay fans.

how is that "gangster"?

shitty bar tho

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 12:17 PM

Angry Wades is not so bad. I think it looks better. But i love me some Yacht club

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 12:17 PM

no, Angry Wades does not look better in red.

And that review of Grocery ...author sounds obnoxious and repeats stupid generalizations
as fact.

I didn't know Andrea Strong as a writer, I know her only as a food blogger, and I find her style and voice totally annoying. She's worse than Amanda what'sherface from the NYTimes. And, the whole getting married thing has been talked about ad nauseum on her blog, which is starting to make me cringe.

Not surprised about Jesse's. I never could figure out when it was open. I know it was also a catering business, but they didn't make it easy for potential customers.

Posted by: Carol Gardens at April 23, 2008 12:32 PM

Cute? Cute? Did she actually put that condescending, annoying, down-the-nose-looking comment in writing? Ug....

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 12:37 PM

Angry Wade's=little piece of UES on Smith Street

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 12:57 PM

Can anyone suggest a couple of happening bars in Park Slope on a Wednesday night? I'm thinking of having a JD and Coke (or three) in the area tonight.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 23, 2008 1:03 PM

Nothing screams -LOSER- more than the crowd that smoke outside of Angry Wades. The worst of the worst.

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 1:15 PM

Its also a terrible paint job. If you look at the upper lip of Angry Wades, they entirely missed that area. There's this awful white stripe of non-paintedness that you see when you walk down Smith towards the smoking beer patrons.

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 1:27 PM

Biff. Try Union Hall and Great Lakes.

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 1:42 PM

Become Buzzer? What a lame food blog.

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 1:47 PM

not surprised about Jesse's either. Took forever to open and then never knew what they served even or even if they were open.
Seemed to me - probably owned by some rich person doing this as a hobby and not really knowing what run the business.

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 2:11 PM

1:42, thanks for the suggestions. It's much appreciated. I'll check them out.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 23, 2008 2:30 PM

Park Slope has charm?

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 3:55 PM

Hey Biff try Carriage Inn on 7th Ave. Look out for Doug!

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 4:32 PM

Thanks 4:32. I looked it up and must admit I like the sounds of the review that noted, "travel back in time to a place when dive bars weren't hip and political correctness wasn't part of the venacular."

Union Hall and Great Lakes also look good. I'll definitely check them all out.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 23, 2008 4:45 PM

does anyone know why boerum hill food company has been closing so much earlier lately? it only seems to be open in the morning and by evening when i return home from work (6:30ish) it is closed

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 5:39 PM

12:08 here
last 2x i was in wades it was 1/2 filled with young bay ridge transplants wearing turtle necks and leather jackets - with gotti kids spiked hair (other 1/2 yes, being aforementioned green bay fans).

maybe that element has moved on - but either way.. i agree.. it's a shitty bar.

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 5:40 PM

im friends with several green bay fans and we always seem to end up at Angry Wades b/c its the only place that plays the games. Never been there when it wasnt a game night tho.

also go to Black Sheep on 5th and Bergen or Freddy's on 6th and Dean (not park slope but whatever)

Posted by: Santa at April 23, 2008 7:25 PM

Wow, I can't believe Great Lakes is mentioned as a bar to go to in PS. No offense to the poster, but I've never had a good time there. The ambiance is horrible. UH, too, a little too pretentious for me.

If you want character, go to Barbes on 9th St/6th Ave. Farm on Flatbush/6th Ave is ok too esp with the outdoor season upon us. Speaking of outdoor, Habana Outpost is one of the coolest places in Brooklyn (Fulton Ave/Portland St).

Posted by: guest at April 23, 2008 10:17 PM

Thanks 10:17, I didn't end up making it out there last night, but will also take note of Barbes, Farm and Habana Outpost. Hopefully tonight or tomorrow night.

Boerum Hill Food Company is closing for dinner in the winter - business was slow that time of day. They are likely to reopen for dinner hours when the weather warms up.

Posted by: trudylou at April 24, 2008 11:48 AM

I lived next to Angry Wades for years. The 4am crowd is loud, and ... angry. What an awful, angry place.

Posted by: guest at April 29, 2008 12:13 AM

I've been to Angry Wade's a number of times. The bartenders are fun, the crowd is eclectic, the music is great! I've never had a bad time!

Yes, I've been there when there is a bay ridge crowd. And when there are "gangsters." And when there are hipsters. And teachers. And young 20-somethings. And chill 30-somethings.

I'd go to Angry Wade's 1000 times over before I went to a bar that was always a certain "scene."

Goodness, the other comments are so hateful and judgmental!
