I'm sorry everyone. I misspoke. The Flea will *not* take place today, but will take place next Sunday (Apr 13). We apologize for this postponement, but it just means that next weekend's Flea will be bigger and better than ever!

Ok Stoner. Thanks for the heads up. I'll bet the weather will be better next weekend anyway.

Didn't get anything last night 10:04???
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2008 10:15 AM
Ignore 10:04. Its a troll trying to mess up the Flea.
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 10:23 AM
10:04 you're an idiot.
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 10:23 AM
I've just returned from the Flea - it's happening and it's a whole big bustling scene. Rest assured these comments about it being postponed are nothing but the fictional sabotage of the bored and pathetic.

Very disappointing that pets are NOT allowed.
Is this because it a city owned property??
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 12:11 PM
NO DOGS! was so surprised. is this something that might changed?
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 3:29 PM
Nice work! It was lots of fun.
Trolls are funny. There were tons and tons of people there, so did they really think they were going to prevent people from going?

The Flea was awesome! Only thing, you should have live music. Those steps are prime for a band. People would hang out all day eating their cupcakes and oohing over one another's purchases and listening to music. Course then it might be impossibly crowded...... Thanks for putting it together in any case!
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 4:12 PM
Too many people sewing junky tote bags and kids clothes that they think are worth a lot of money. More antiques and less handicrafts would be better.
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 4:28 PM
Very HAPPY that pets are not allowed. This is in back of a public school's play area and track field. Not appropriate for pets and especially dogs. Not only will the dogs pee and poop on the track field but due to the crowded conditions the dogs might get hurt by someone accidentally stepping on their paws and the dogs might get aggressive in return. Not to mention the people that are allergic to them.
Self-entitled dog owners need to look at the bigger picture.

I don't which Flea Market you guys went to. But if this is the same one happening at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High.. I am totally disappointed.
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 4:33 PM
I went at 10:05am, and it was already packed! Many thanks for putting this together, Mr. B. The mix of vendors was absolutely great!
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 4:35 PM
i thought it was a great start - i agree about too many handmade totes, but i got the sense that this is about a lot more than that and I heard that other vendors with more antiques and stuff will be coming soon! I am so happy that you have done this - i can only see it getting better and better. thanks for this and please don't listen to the nattering nabobs. armchair critics who wouldn't have pulled this off.
thanks b.

This f^cking sucks. I saw a notice on this site earlier today saying that the Flea was canceled for today, so I stayed home. What happened?
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 5:05 PM
it wasn't a notice from brownstoner, it was a comment from someone calling himself jon butler. if anything were official, it would be an actual post. it eludes me as to why someone would try to sabatoge it, but go figure. loser, i guess. weird loser.

I saw quite a few dogs even though there were signs that they were not permitted. I agree that they are a trip hazard.
I also think that the many toddlers I saw are a trip hazard too. Pick your kid up and carry them if they are unstable and slow. It was so crowded they might not be seen before they are knocked down. They will get hurt more than the adult falling over them. I do want to say thanks for leaving the stroller home though.
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 5:48 PM
I also thought it was cancelled, which stinks because I was really looking forward to it. I hate this.
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 6:01 PM
I am glad that no dogs were allowed. I'd love to see a stroller ban - carry the kid or park the stroller by the steps (is there a side entrance?)... It was far too crowded for that many strollers or wandering toddlers. Kids are cute, I want one, but I think that this was over the top. Especially the entitled parents who allowed their toddlers to scream in the middle of the yard, though outside, the place was packed... Pack that kid up and take it home. Next week - here's to a continued dog ban, a new stroller ban and violation cards we can hand out to people who violate reasonable social norms.
thanks Mr B.

I went to the flea market and I was a little disappointed. Didnt seem like all the announced vendors were there but all in all a good turnout considering the dismal weather.Looking forward to warmer days. The food vendors had long lines so good for them.Hats off to you Brownstoner for putting this together.
Posted by: iluvclintonhill at April 6, 2008 7:06 PM
Hopefully this flea will get better because it wasnt anything to write home about. Missed the vendors with the sweat socks, cell phone accessories, hats, gloves and scarves after all. Could have used some of that stuff today.
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 7:10 PM
I went around 11am and it was already packed!
I wasn't expecting to spend so much and had to go get some more cash. Very happy & satisfied with the varieties of vendors but would be nice if there are more furniture, antiques, rugs, etc.
YES to no pets policy, but HELL NO to banning strollers - many of those families with kids are probably new homeowners in the area and without catering to their needs this flea market won't be able to get much needed support!
Cheap, low-budget hipsters need to relax, while you are looking for some crappy, used, worn-out clothes ( oh yeah they call them vintage, right?)homeowners are spending hundreds of dollars on salvaged mantles, original pocket doors, etc.
BTW I loved the waffles, too!
Will definitely come back!

I was a vendor, along with my colleagues from the Ft. Greene Photography Organization. We were very happy--the turn out was fantastic. The only problem was that it was so damn cold--something out of Mr. B's control.
I think the event was remarkably well planned--I had expected that the vendor registration and set-up at this, or any, new flea market would be chaotic, but it went very smoothly.
Kudos to Eric and Jon!
Posted by: Bob Marvin at April 6, 2008 7:52 PM
today's event was amazing. what would've the turnout been like if it was sunny and 60 like it was supposed to be? roadblock, that's what..
my thanks to eric and brownstoner for putting together a quality event. i'm surprised it ran so smoothly and i was a vendor.
i've heard different things - some ppl wanted a mix of cheesy 3 tube socks for $5 bucks and some higher end vendors. one friend thought it was more of a market than a flea market. i say, keep the tube socks out. go to aqueduct in the summer if you want that junk.
www.onehansonplace.com for link to my sneakers. will be back in may.

BTW, Jon B. stopped by our[FGPO] table at about 2:30 and told me that they had counted 12,000 people by that hour! This shows that the "asshats" making phony cancellation announcements utterly failed.
Posted by: Bob Marvin at April 6, 2008 8:22 PM
I couldn't make it today, but heard from friends (vendors AND shoppers) that it was a terrific event.
CONGRATS TEAM BROWNSTOWNER!

Carry your brat. There are plenty of hipster parents buying vintage clothing, plenty of parents who do not own a house, plenty who spend so much on the kids they can't buy antiques, and plenty of childless people with houses nicer than yours who do have money for something other than overpriced onesies.

Wow, the same yuppie crap you can buy all over Fort Greene and Park Slope anyway, and for the same outrageous prices. What a deal. Utter waste of time compared to something like the Alemany flea in San Francisco.
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 9:37 PM
I want to know what happened. If the Flea happened, why did this site announce that it was NOT happening today? My wife and I were planning to come and it looks like we missed it because of an erroneous announcement on this site.
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 9:48 PM
sorry, but you can't get any of these kicks in fort greene or park slope, not even premium goods on 5th ave.

Enough with the used stank sneakers onehanson.
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 10:22 PM
I thoroughly enjoyed the flea, despite the weather.
Bought a few really great things, and contrary to a few comments, found the prices quite reasonable, actually. A couple of the places selling vintage bowls, glasses, etc were downright cheap compared to the stores I go to.
Can't wait to come again and again.
By the time I left around 2pm though, the crowds were getting outrageous. I'm guessing it will calm down as time goes by, but I also shudder to think how many people will be there on a NICE day.
Posted by: jerri blank at April 6, 2008 10:30 PM
I also thought the Flea was canceled. What's the deal? Why was it called off and then back on again?
Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 10:38 PM
fun but overpriced. as stated enough with the $49 tote bags ($8 at strand). the food line was ridiculous. how many people need expensive t-shirts? i used to go to the chelsea flea market and let me tell you it was not the chelsea flea market. you need to find a happy medium, and i'm not talking about including tube socks. not all of us who live in the neighborhood can afford yuppie stuff. no wonder most people were just "window shopping"-keep it up and you won't have any repeat customer.

I wish Brownstoner would get rid of this whole comments feature. The world would feel so much safer and happier. Really, why do you continue keeping this feature? It is just a forum for people to badger and spit out garbage left and right.
Maybe because at least this way they have a venue, and if they didn't they might become actual criminals?
So much semantics, flea market, vintage market...it is better than the overpriced sausage fests that go on all summer. They did a good job and it will only get better. Lazy blog posters, create something from scratch, then accuse.
I also so a ton of people buying things. Just saying.
How much should someone charge for a hand made, individually created t shirt anyway? If you do not like it, go on over to Target, where they have $8 shirts made in China by $5 year olds. Is that better?

too much kids clothing, not enough adult clothing.

This site annonced that the Flea was cancelled! What gives??? I'd have been there but I thought it would be an empty lot.
Posted by: guest at April 7, 2008 6:56 AM
I was a vendor and was very happy with how the day went. Great turnout dispite the weather.
As far as t shirts being overpriced,
I sell things for less at markets than I do online and in shops. Most other vendors do too. People appreciate it and it helps me sell more.
I had one person comment that the t shirts I was selling for $20 were to much. It cracked me up. To anyone who thinks that $20 is to much for a hand printed t shirt...
Please understand I BUY quality blank shirt, spend time coming up with great designs, make and shoot screens, print them myself, heat set them, fold, package and lable them, organize them MYSELF and bring them to market. $20 is a great deal!!
Kudos to Eric and Jon for putting on a great market!
Posted by: guest at April 7, 2008 8:06 AM
I think it was a nice success as far as people attendance, despite the weather but watch out for the fine line of Flea market and arts and craft crap! you should be more selective on the vendors, there were very few antique furniture's there, and prague kolektiv is just a promotion for the store without any flea market prices, hopefully will get better!
Posted by: guest at April 7, 2008 8:20 AM
As for more antique and used furniture, we are already loading up the truck for our next visit on April 27th. We sold ALL our furniture (antique and our own line) except dfor one vanity. I hope the people will be more patient and let this evolve into what you really what it to be. Dollars talk. If the stuff sells, vendors will be back. One weekend doesn't make a market, good or bad, but I'm still perplexed over some of the negative comments. Why should anyone care if a mom or dad want to spend the day pushing a stroller through a flea market? You have a great quality of life event there and you should nurture it and not be so quick to trash it. Complaining with suggestion is like........... (fill in the blank).
