StreetLevel: The Muffin Man is Coming

59-Lafayette-Avenue-0408.jpg
One of Brooklyn's biggest little coffee/pastry chains, Connecticut Muffin, is opening another Fort Greene location, this one at the corner of Lafayette and Fulton. The storefront used to be a Citibank mortgage center, according to General Greene, and it looks like it'll be in business pretty soon.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 2:41 PM

There is no such thing as too many muffin shops.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 2:42 PM

ah, finally. Official confirmation that Fort Greene is the new Park Slope.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 2:43 PM

It sure is nice to see a bank becoming something else for a change.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 2:47 PM

Not sure it qualifies as one of "Brooklyn's biggest little coffee/pastry chains" as the first shop opened up on Prince and Elizabeth in the city.

Posted by: Brooklynnative at April 3, 2008 2:47 PM

Your right 2:43 Fr Green = Park Slope 2003

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 2:56 PM

Cometh. The Muffin Man *cometh*. No brainer.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 2:56 PM

I hope those wood boards on the ground are indicative of a little outdoor seating - that is always a welcome addition.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 3:12 PM

I hope they only sell the muffin tops at this location.

Posted by: jerri blank at April 3, 2008 3:14 PM

They should open a store on Franklin in crown heights. Then I wouldnt have to go all the way to Prospect Heights to get decent baked goods. We have a few new restaurants on Franklin in the last month or so - and an italian place is going to open on Franklin and Prospect Place soon. I cannot wait !

If this is true, what is Clinton Hill, which got Connecticut Muffin 6 years ago?

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 3:32 PM

"The storefront used to be a Citibank mortgage center"

But you guys told me Brooklyn was immune.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 3:35 PM

Jerri, I prefer the bottoms to the tops.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 3, 2008 3:38 PM

I prefer the bottoms versus the tops (more precisely).

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 3, 2008 3:39 PM

Actually me too Biff...

The tops are too big for me to handle in one sitting.

And contrary to popular belief, I find the bottoms to be a little more moist.

Posted by: jerri blank at April 3, 2008 3:39 PM

Actually if you use sufficient non-stick spray, the tops also have no problem sliding in and out of the cylindrical base.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 3, 2008 3:46 PM

Here they go again.
Now that RE is tanking this site is devolving into a chatline for 3 older gay men. Granted this is a RE site for Brownstones so I assumed 90% of the participants are gay, but how did we get to this point?

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 3:56 PM

What’s with the gay innuendos???? So yall plan on hijacking every thread and twist the subject matter??

You guys are really far worse than the spammer.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 3:58 PM

How much exactly does one need to talk about a new Connecticut Muffin, 3:58?

Please share some of your oh so wise insight into what we should be discussing here.

Blueberry vs Oat Bran??

Or how about one of the faded type posters here. Ft. Greene the new Park Slope because of this place opening?

God, that is SO DEEP!!!

Or better yet...your post, which has absolutely nothing to do with Ft. Greene, a muffin OR Brooklyn.

Posted by: jerri blank at April 3, 2008 4:05 PM

"How much exactly does one need to talk about a new Connecticut Muffin, 3:58?'

How much does one neeed to make gay sex innuendos?

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 4:08 PM

4:08, I would say quite a bit. Can you please move the topic back to muffins as only you can so artfully do?

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 3, 2008 4:11 PM

"How much exactly does one need to talk about a new Connecticut Muffin"

seriously how many separate posts do you need to make one point?

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 4:21 PM

3:56/3:58/4:08/4:21, why don't you talk about the exciting world of muffins you're so desperate to discuss and stop paying attention to anything off topic, including your own posts?

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 3, 2008 4:24 PM

It wasn't Citi Home Mortgage previously, it was Wamu, Chase or someone else...

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 4:29 PM

Biff Champion while i agree that Brownstoner has not been very interesting lately (RE is going down the tiolet after all), I don't think you 3 should hijack the blogs with your sex innuendos and flirting. There are other sites that are created for those things.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 4:47 PM

2:43-wrong. ft. greene will NEVER be park slope. remember that.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 4:51 PM

4:47...I don't think you should hijack every thread with your Debby Downer, have nothing to do with anything posts.

There are blogs for that also.

Try ihaveastickupmyass.com

Posted by: jerri blank at April 3, 2008 4:54 PM

4:47, I do appreciate you at least expressing your opinion intelligently and in a non-confrontational way. I honestly don't think we're "hijacking" blogs and it's not at all something we try to do. Maybe the exchange above was a bit juvenile, but we're just trying to have fun while we DO make points on the topic at hand. Ok, not so much in this story, but pretty much every other one. Since I don't have anything to add to this story, I'll leave and let everyone else get back to the muffins. But I'll continue to try to have constructive input in other topics and not be afraid to lighten things up occasionally.

Go ahead, get back to the discussion and be bigger than us and talk about the headline.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 3, 2008 4:56 PM

I went to the one in Park Slope years ago and the muffins were so-so, the service painfully slow, and the lines were long. That tells you something, but I don't know what. I'll try again now that they're so close, but I'll bet the bagel store on the next block is still going to be better. I guess the question is do all the people who got the Chase Mortgages still have money for muffins?

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 5:12 PM

Uh-oh... I hear the sound of bugaboos zeroing in on this muffin shop like a bum on a ham sandwich.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 5:17 PM

Please don't say bum around here.

You know how it gets us all riled up.

Posted by: jerri blank at April 3, 2008 5:18 PM

While we are in the neighborhood....anyone know what is opening up in the former hardware space on Fulton St off South Elliot..next to the cake man?

Posted by: iluvclintonhill at April 3, 2008 5:27 PM

I can't wait to go muffin diving.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 5:28 PM

5:18...like a homeless individual on a croque-monsieur then.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 5:31 PM

Ok. That was good, 5:31.

Truly.

Posted by: jerri blank at April 3, 2008 5:39 PM

Dammit. Why can't we have a good cafe instead of the endless procession of bad chain cafe-ish things?

Posted by: zinka at April 3, 2008 5:45 PM

the bugaboos will be invading once opened.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 6:58 PM

when did everything turn so fuckin fag on this site??

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 7:15 PM

It was definitely a Chase Mortgage office, not Citibank.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 7:16 PM

BROWNSTONER DON'T KNOW NOTHING BECAUSE IT WAS A CHASE MORTGAGE STORE FRONT & THE MUFFIN MAN IS A WOMAN.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 9:14 PM

7:16, you are right. it was Chase, not Citi.

Posted by: guest at April 3, 2008 11:55 PM

This site is soooo over.

Posted by: guest at April 4, 2008 8:30 AM

Can someone please confirm if this was a Chase or a Citibank? I need it for the research on my new book entitled "Boring Shit I do When I'm Supposed to be Working".

Posted by: guest at April 4, 2008 10:26 AM

Some people like cupcakes better. I, for one, care less for them.

Aw man, my comment took several minutes to appear.

Posted by: grvsmth at April 6, 2008 8:47 PM

The name makes sense to me, seeing as how Connecticut is world famous for its muffins.
