StreetLevel: Slope Baluchi's Still in the Works
About a year and a half ago Gowanus Lounge reported that the Indian restaurant Baluchi's, formerly of Smith Street, was opening a new location in the Slope, on 5th Avenue between 2nd and 3rd streets. While the news was true, there's been precious little progress on the restaurant space, and we'd lately come to accept the fact that it was probably never going to happen. Not the case, according to the owner, who toured us around the future eatery last week. As shown in the photo above, there's an accumulation of furniture for the restaurant, and the owner says he'd like to open it in about a month and a half. So why the hold-up? The Baluchi's proprietor blames crappy work crews for the extremely delayed opening. Whatever the reason, if/when the place does finally open, we think it'll be a welcome addition to Park Slope's dining scene, which does not boast a tremendous number of quality Indian restaurants.

Baluchis is a small chain. I've never found the food that impressive. They do a fairly good job at decor, though.
I have found the food at Star of India on 5th Ave. to be fairly authentic and tasty, though I think it's Pakistani owned. I never see many people in the place and have always wondered why...

OK one vote for Star of India; any others in greater PS that are good? None of them I've looked into has ever been that appealing and the couple I've been to have been lousy.

Does anyone know what is going to replace the Circle Bar and Windsor Chop House by Prospect Park?

A gay bar hopefully.

Joy on Flatbush Ave has pretty decent Indian. I think Queens has cornered the "great" Indian food market.

Sadly there is no great Indian food in the Slope. Joy is adequate, as is Kinara. Bombay Grill is awful and Star of India is subpar.
I haven't tried Baluchi's but will give it a shot whenever they manage to open.

For the record, nearly every single "Indian" restaurant in NYC is owned and operated by Bangladeshis, not Indians.
Does anybody know why Indian food in the US always leads to digestive problems (AKA soft stool)?
Seriously, even when I just eat vegetarian Indian dishes, like clockwork, first thing the next morning, I'm reminded of my previous meal when I hit the can.
What's up with Indian in the US? I've never been to India, but I've eaten tons of Indian food in Malaysia without any of the "after effect" I experience here every time.

TMI.

A good authentic Indian restaurant is seriously lacking in Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope. No disrespect to my bangladeshi brothers, but all the restaurants that I have frequented in the Heights/Slope (Amin, Masala Cafe, Kinara, Raga etc..) are all operated by bangladeshis and unfortunately they do not serve authentic north indian cuisine...not only is the menu miserably mispelt, the food is greasy and unorignal.

Don't worry, there will still be an italian restaurant on 5th btwn 2nd and 3rd...and another on 5th btwn 1st and 2nd - owned by the same people!
I've always been under the impression that Star of India is owned by the same people as the one up on 7th near Union (Amin, I think it's called), justifying it's complete emptiness all the time yet it's staying in business.
Morning after effect theory:
ghee = runs
