StreetLevel: Cherry Tree Gets Behind the Mule
The owners of 4th Avenue's Cherry Tree bar are expanding their reach—right next door. The pub's proprietors took over the lease of Mule, the coffee shop they share a wall with. The lights have been out at Mule for about a month now, and one of Cherry Tree's owners told us they're hoping to reopen the popular java spot in a few weeks. Mule's likely to be reincarnated with later hours at first, and it'll probably have coffee and beer on offer. The Cherry Tree owner said he and his partners need to learn more about the coffee-hawking game before bringing Mule back full-force, with regular daytime hours. Mule was widely heralded as a business that defined the changing face of 4th Avenue from a seedy truck route to a rapidly gentrifying stretch. GMAP

Mule failed to keep its original coffee and menu, slowly screwing it up big time. Its a great place and space. I think this will be better for Mule if they keep it simple and get some quality coffee. Thats all the place needs

Mule closed already? I hope the other new places along that stretch have better staying power.

Mule was shut down by the mob. Seriously.
I heard a big guy in a stereotypical soppranos-stlye jogging suit told the kid behind the counter the the owner was "late on his garbage payments". The kid called the boss who told him to take cash out of the drawer. The big guy also took a cappuccino and said he'd be back. He left a hand written receipt. No kidding.
2 weeks later, the place was closed. This is not a troll post, not some BS, it's true. I don't know what he meant by "garbage" but something went down. Is this just the cost of doing business on 4th ave?

8:01 is not just talking trash. The owners of Mule were beyond "pushed out". All they wanted was to have a nice family business & it turned into such a head ache. They thought they were bringing something nice to the stretch--damn good coffee, sandwiches, salads & soups not to mention a gorgeous cafe & garden. What they got in return was a lot of "noise complaint" calls, cigarette butt violations in the garden and B.S. Good for them that they moved on. Hopefully Cherry Tree will be able to stand up to the people that hold this stretch hostage. People need to appreciate what small business owners are trying to do with their community!

"damn good coffee"? You must be thinking of some other establishment besides Mule.

I know the truth of Mule. The owners were the young couple behind the bar. He's a electrician and I don't know what else she did. Apparently, they were way over their head underestiamting how much time and effort it took to run the place. I heard it did ok but with that rent, it was all too much. So they walked away.

The Cherry Tree has taken over the mule. Our intentions are to bring the mule back to its former glory. We will be making it a little more comfy with a few couches etc.. Also we will be using local coffee brewers coffee, all made in Brooklyn. Our aim is to make it a nice little coffee house with a bakery! Cask beers will also be served, coming from Sixpoint brewery and Kelso brewery both local Brooklyn breweries. Menu simple like the coffee.
All the Cherry Tree wants to do is to help the neighborhood, we hire local and do our best for all. Hope to see you all soon.

Mule was a fabulous place to be a Brooklynite, have a snack, and *get some work done.* The space was very appealing and the crowd was always pleasant, and pretty quiet. I've been speaking with several friends/colleagues about its closing and we really miss it!!!
PLEASE REOPEN MULE ASAP, THERE"S NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT IN THE AREA!!!!!!

What I like about Cherry Tree is from the first time they opened they've made efforts to work with the community and improve itself. Sure, it's not necessarily my crowd but I respect the fact that they don't keep the back open throughout the night unlike 4th avenue pub.
Also, when they first opened, the back was a bit charmless and the music inside was horrible and badly EQ'd (real ear piercer). Now the back is amazing and the mix isn't painful.
I liked Mule somewhat but as someone who lives and dies by his coffee, it wasn't anything that kept me away from Duncan Donuts. And also, what is it about people in coffee shops who set up camp like it were there office? Staying three hours for the price of a cup of coffee. Talk about killing a small business.
Anyway, I think Cherry Tree will make good. Now if they could only take over 4th Avenue Pub.

Who's holding who hostage? I take it you don't have a bar's backyard "beer garden" facing yours. I live about 100' from 4th Avenue Pubs Beer Garden and the contempt they show for the surrounding neighbors is unbelievable. We can't sleep with our windows open; every good day sounds like a party till 2-3 am; forget about children getting to sleep; etc.
I've lived here for over ten years and the backyard was the only refuge you have from the noise of the City. 4th Avenue Pub has ruined and thumbs their nose at trying work with the neighborhood. One of my neighbors who lived on 4th Avenue moved out with his wife and kid because he coudn't take the noise anymore. Tell me how this improves a neighborhood. It's okay for all of you who don't have to listen to loud drunks every single night it's nice out. Or have to work in the morning. Or have to put a child to sleep. The surrounding people are not typical NIMBY folk but old people, cihldren, folks who have to work in the morning. THe effect of backyard bars is far reaching.
Cherry Tree had the decency to limit their hours and reduce the noise. 4th Avenue Pub is just greedy little dive that couldn't give a rats ass about its neighbors. It will go down.
