See You On Sunday at The Brooklyn Flea

loughlin-yard-0408.jpg
Well, here we are, exactly five months since we announced our intention to launch a flea market at the Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School (above) in Fort Greene. Since then, the Brooklyn Flea has taken on a life of its own, attracting interest from over 800 vendors and a gazillion media outlets. (We got some more ink today on Gothamist.) Luckily, we had the good sense to bring Eric Demby on board early on; his taste, diplomacy and communication skills have been invaluable. We also have had crucial support from day one from City Councilmember Tish James, who recognized from the start what a boost the market could be for neighborhood spirit and economy, and Rob Perris over at Community Board one who proved to be a fountain of knowledge about how to get things done in this town. Marty Markowitz, who will be on hand for the ribbon cutting at 1 p.m. on Sunday, also lent much needed support along the way. And, of course, none of this would have been possible without the co-operation of Brother Dennis at Bishop Loughlin. Lastly, Mrs. B deserves serious kudos for doing double duty as both a curatorial advisor and all-round trooper as we've been saddled with double our regular workload in recent weeks.

With Sunday morning fast approaching, all 200 vendors are in place, we've dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's we can, and now it's time to sit back and pray for sunshine. As with any new venture, there are bound to be some hiccups, but we can honestly say that we couldn't be happier with the incredible mix of vendors that will be on display on Sunday. We're also looking forward to getting a chance to meet as many readers and vendors as possible in person on Sunday, so don't be shy! The Brooklyn Flea takes place this Sunday, and every Sunday thereafter, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 176 Lafayette Avenue between Clermont and Vanderbilt Avenues in Fort Greene; for directions and a list of vendors please click here. Very cool.

I have a bad feeling your flea is going to put a big dent in my fun money :)

Can I get a discount if I'm one of your little pets on this blog?

Posted by: guest at April 4, 2008 4:56 PM

Good luck with this next move Brownstoner, cuz this site has has gone to shite. RE is the bastard son we all want to hide in our closets. Why not shut this thing down now, rather than subject yourself to further humiliation.

Did your ARM just reprice 5:00??

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 4, 2008 5:02 PM

Dave, I'm glad to see you here before I sign off. I wanted to thank you for all the fun over the last couple of days and wish you all the best in your return to work next week.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 4, 2008 5:05 PM

I will be here one more week. Thanks.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 4, 2008 5:09 PM

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 4, 2008 5:11 PM

Mr. B, good luck with the flea.

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 4, 2008 5:12 PM

Haha! Not if I can help it!!

Posted by: Biff Champion at April 4, 2008 5:12 PM

Dave...I'll be in the 6th borough next weekend, but I'll be at Brooklyn Flea for sure on Sunday!

Can't wait!

Posted by: jerri blank at April 4, 2008 5:32 PM

I'll be down here again next weekend....where will you be in Philly?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 4, 2008 5:37 PM

Hey Mr. B., is it too late for me to sign up as a vendor? I want to sell T-shirts saying

Some day this war
is gonna end.....

The What

I think they'll be a big seller. Just one color, brown, of course.

Posted by: Brooklynnative at April 4, 2008 6:14 PM

3 things for sure:

Vendors will fight over an inch of space and complain about their assigned areas.

Plastic bags will be everywhere and stick to the cyclone fence at great heights.

Canopies that are not tied down will blow around and injure the shoppers.

Posted by: guest at April 4, 2008 7:24 PM

Can the personal stuff be kept on your personal email or IM? Why do we all have to read it?

Posted by: guest at April 4, 2008 7:39 PM

7:39

You CHOSE to read it by going to the thread, no?

Posted by: guest at April 4, 2008 8:01 PM

Ill buy one of those t-shirts!

Posted by: guest at April 4, 2008 8:43 PM

Good Luck!

Posted by: guest at April 4, 2008 8:51 PM

B- you clipped me? all good. For the record the only reason I used the F word to describe those 3 is because they used it yesterday. I'm no phobe just call it like I read it.

Posted by: guest at April 4, 2008 9:52 PM

Brownstoner you rock! I'm so excited about the flea market. Not just cause i'm a vendor but because i'm old enough to remember how awesome the Chelsea Flea Market used to be. Everyone I talk to is beyond excited about it. Thanks for not only having the idea but the chutzpah and follow through to make it happen. Viva la Brooklyn!

Posted by: bkkitten at April 4, 2008 10:02 PM

Oh please let there be bargains for the poor yet funky!
Good luck,

Posted by: Brenda from Flatbush at April 4, 2008 11:12 PM

If you sell any shirts that say "Someday this war is gonna end.. The What". You better be wearing a helmet!

I will be there!

The What

Someday this war is gonna end...

Posted by: guest at April 5, 2008 12:03 AM

Hey What, that's great you're coming to the Flea on Sunday. I thought the Jersey traffic might discourage you.

Posted by: Brooklynnative at April 5, 2008 10:24 AM

1500 open houses on corcoran, the end is near

Posted by: guest at April 5, 2008 12:59 PM

There is work on the G line this weekend.

Posted by: guest at April 5, 2008 2:16 PM

Gee are the vendors going to be subject to the mean scrutiny of the posters on here week after weeks?

no one can seem to do anything right with these blog poster folks.

Posted by: guest at April 5, 2008 5:13 PM

Is this for real?

Posted by: guest at April 5, 2008 11:46 PM

Crap. Oh well. Don't sweat it Mr. B. We can wait one more week.

Posted by: Jon Butler at April 6, 2008 6:40 AM

Just out of curiosity, what are the "logistical and legal hurdles"? You never know...some of us might be able to help!

Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 7:01 AM

One week is no big deal. My sister is in town and was hoping to attend, but like the terminator, "She'll be back."

Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 7:10 AM

i'm sure 6:33am and 6:40 are hoaxes. the same person signed in as 'Jon Butler' issued the statement and reply.

Posted by: ltjbukem73 at April 6, 2008 7:54 AM

Mr. B signs in as Brownstoner

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at April 6, 2008 9:18 AM

If the Brooklyn Flea had truly been canceled, you better believe Mr. B would have added a very obvious, prominent and major new post to the site announcing it. The juvenile losers here are so pathetic!

Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 9:31 AM

The What: did you get a patent on that quote? If no, I'm going out to get one first thing tomorrow morning - and I ain't wearing no helmet when I'm out there selling teeshirts - punk!

Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 9:44 AM

This sucks. There's no way I'm hauling ass all the way up north on the off chance that Brooklyn Flea MIGHT be happening today. Why can't Mr. B keep a tighter rein on this blog?

I'll go next weekend, but not this time.

Posted by: guest at April 6, 2008 9:48 AM

just spoke with b'stoner - the flea is on - they're there!

Posted by: miss priss at April 6, 2008 9:56 AM

I had a dog there and I heard from a flea staffer that there will be a dog sitter there next weekend for doggists to leave their dog with for a few minutes if necessary.
Oh, and the B. Flea was totally fun and full of folks who were just out having a nice time. What a nice addition to the community!
