Second Oro's Hotel To Be a (Nicky-less) Hilton Hybrid

both%20oros.jpgWhen told that the two hotels inside the second Oro tower in Downtown Brooklyn (at right in the rendering) would be a Hilton brand, for selfish reasons we were kinda hoping one would be a Nicky-O, Nicky Hilton's so far unsuccessful attempt at the family business. But alas, news came today that they would be a Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites (yawn). According to a press release on Hotel News Resource: "The property will be a joint new build with Hilton Garden Inn and offer approximately 100 Homewood Suites guest suites, configured in a layered tower-style setting in the high-rise building. There will be separate Homewood Suites and Hilton Garden Inn lobbies on different floors, as well as separate elevators leading to each brand's guest rooms. The building's second tower will be private residences." Homewood Suites expects to break ground in September 2008, with an anticipated completion one year later, said the release. While the brand will be completing its 250th hotel later this year, this would be its first in Brooklyn. How are Oro condo owners next door are going to feel about this?

I bought at ORO and I think it's great. For one thing, I won't be staring at a hole in the ground outside my window forever. In addition, it provides additional impetus for the city to complete the streetscape project, so the area does not look like the eye sore that it is now.

Not exactly an Ian Schraeger project but as 11:14 points out, it sure beats a hole in the ground.

As long as they keep the design consistent I think it'll be fine. If it looks too much like a low-end Hilton, it could suck.

Who loses the sunlight? The condo or the hotel? Or does Avalon Bay and Toren already plan on doing that?

As someone who stays at Hilton frequently, the two Hilton brands they mentioned, HGI and Homewood suites are both what I would call lower tier Hiltons (not as low as Hampton Inn though), and are typically 3 story hotels in suburban/rural locations.

I have no idea why they wouldn't brand this as a regular Hilton or a Doubletree Suites, which, from the renditions, seems to be a more proper branding for a high rise in a great city location.

Yes, these are lower end Hilton branded (and furnished) labels...are they trying to bring up the rep of these labels by having a hi-rise flagships? Sounds yucky to me...

"anticipated completion one year later"

Is that rather optimistic? What's the usual completion time on something of this size? Two years? Three?

Good point 12:19. Let's use Oro I as a guide. They broke ground March 2006 and they are still going at it. I'd say if they break ground September 2008, they would complete it first quarter 2011.

Confused. Are they building 2 towers? One a dual-named hotel and the other for private residences? How tall are they going to be?

This is downtown Brooklyn poeple. It's not even the more popular part of of it. No way this can go high-end.

Imagine all the confused foreign tourists and business travelers getting into the wrong building (Oro I the condo) ... hilarity!

Posted by: guest at April 22, 2008 2:30 PM

And those same confused tourists staggering out of Oro I the condo and into the bicycle lane on the Brooklyn Bridge!!
