Prospect Park Rink Plans Getting Pricier
The cost of Prospect Park's new Lakeside Center has risen to $75 million, according to an article in the Daily News. The project will involve replacing the current Wollman Rink, pictured above, with two new rinks, a roller rink for summer months, water features, new roadwork and a parking lot. Last year the cost of the new recreation center was pegged at $50 million, but the president of the Prospect Park Alliance says the project has become more expensive as new details, like the parking lot, have been added. The proposal has been allocated $22.5 million in taxpayer dollars by Mayor Bloomberg, Borough President Marty Markowitz and the City Council, and park officials expect to get more funding from the city as well as through private donations. The whole shebang needs to be approved by the Parks Dept. and LPC before moving forward, and a Prospect Park spokesperson said that he's confident funding will be in place by the time all the necessary approvals are granted. At present, construction on Lakeside Center is supposed to start in 2010 and be completed the following year.

Is it just me,or is that price insane? Have we all become so desensitized to inflated prices for everything ,that we just don't notice it anymore? 75 million or even 50 million for two rinks is just CRAZY! Think about how much of that money is being pocketed and how much it actually takes to build the rinks.

Maybe they should toll cars using the park as a shortcut or charge for parking to cover some of these costs.

Why does this rink need a parking lot? The one in Central Park doesn't have one.

I had the same reaction as 9:41 above. I mean, I know construction costs money, but 75 mil??? (Makes me think I want to go into public works construction...)

Even with a parking lot, how much could that cost? Lets fly a few Canadians down - I'm sure they could build a much better rink for $1MM and a case of beer.

Of all the money spent by the city, it's good to see some of it go towards something I can use and enjoy. The summer roller skating rink is great idea as well.
Does anyone know where the actual plans and budget are published ?

Exactly. Trust me, cities and towns across the Upper Midwest who all build ice skating rinks, every one of them, so everybody can have their favorite Winter sport, hockey, are not spending this kind of money. This is all about the politics, kickbacks and overpriced contractors of NYC.

Seriously, I am sure that people in neighborhoods with no parks, or sucky parks, would prefer to get some of that $22 million going to help rich people in the Slope ice skate.
